Intuitive workflow when shooting in manual mode with vintage glass

My intuition tells me that those old lenses are toys of great value that should be found in museum.

Don't you like cell phone spread and pinch ?, Or you just want going backwards because your comfort is there?

Using manual old lens and using ks2 with mode dial set to Tav , the lcd show the " F......" blank - meaning - it will not show aperture .
Because you need to set manually the aperture ring but it will not appear on lcd data.
I say manual old lens is for fun creation of arts, exploring everything but not recommended. Things of the past is only a keepsake, not to mix with current trend.
Those lens like J.C. Penny, Sears, Vivitar, etc. are things of the past - better accept the new trend of cell phone cameras.

Ahh just play the arrow up/arrow down on your four way controller and rear edial to set your desired ISO settings.
Av and Tav mode looks the same at default, but when you play to navigate, you can get it.

SMC-A Zoom like the A35-105/3,5 or the A70-210/4 are that more comportable... and better.

Yes I have also Pentax A 35-135mm zoom lens that is easy to use in Tav mode, comfortable but heavy lens make me use it for occasion like field trip.
The thing I don't understand the tip front end of the lens is somewhat freely rotating - is this really the behavior of the lens?

pres589, uncle vanya, photogem, thank you for your valuable info, gotcha.

The way I look at it, Pentax with A aperture ring is better than old vivitar manual lens even though I like the construction of it.

Yes this is only a look alike to my actual lens but not buying this lens at ebay.

I have been doing quickshift with my 18-50mm but uneasy for me to this kind of lens because it is in autofocus, so I rather just set to manual focus.
Plainly I am looking for substitute to my vivitar 35-70 - a manual focusing pentax lens ( example 28-85 ) with zooming and fine tuning capability in manual focus mode.

Christian Rock and photo gem - Thanks for your thought to enlighten me.

What Pentax 28 - less than 100 mm focal length that have A aperture ring - use in manual zooming that there is a fine tuning ( aside from main zooming ) like my vivitar film lens or somewhat like that.
Auto focus is nice but at night time I prefer manual zooming and in less that 6 feet object distance .

Thanks everyone to your input and very educational to me. I will try to see and compare the Pentax K mount to this Vivitar camera lens physically if there is a difference in size as seen on the mount side. Maybe next week because I have just minor surgery that makes me rest for a week. I am retired already and photo hobbyist and enjoying what life has to offer.

Vivitar 35-70 mm 1:3.5-4.8 MC Macro Focusing Zoom Lens PK mount Free Shipping | eBay

The picture of cover is PK mount, but mine has no cover (lost) but mounted on vivitar film camera bought 1994.
Good if no adapter ring is needed, no setting of " A " on lens required and ready for trial.

Camera Film lens vivitar 35-70 mm, 1: 3.5-4.8, 52 dia, as seen on ebay look alike is PK mount and I would like to use in K-S2 if Ok. Can not upload photo because my limit is reached.
Will this require M42 adapter ring?
There is no letter "A" on lens to set to use the manual lens in dslr.
Any thought?

canon FD mount to pentax K mount question

I did post this topic long ago but no clear answer I got and just leave it and now it come to my mind again.
I have tried old 28-105 mm with letter "A" setting to take manual lens in my k-s2 and this work good but the thing I did not like is very heavy lens.
Now this Vivitar 35-70 is light and I like the minor fine tuning focus - not yet tried on k-s2 for no one has advised me to use it to k-s2.
I will look for photo if I have.

Hello there: I have a Vivitar 35-70 mm film lens with might be a PK mount as seen from ebay that looks alike, manual lens, 1:3.5-4.8 macro and never use since 1994.
If I will use this into Pentax K-S2 - K mount - does this needs a M42 adapter ring?
Also the Vivitar lens do not have mark letter " A " for enabling the manual lens into digital camera.
You guide is much appreciated.

K-S2 Aperture Block Failure

No I did not question their reason/s in finding the true cause of aperture block or so called dark phenomena. It just so happened that my camera has dark images maybe caused by a wrong set ups but it clicks and I get acceptable photo. So far when I set to Tav mode in live view adjusted shutter speed and aperture value that appear on screen which are red set up display means wrong and white display means ok to click but maybe with a wrong parameters used.
As you said pentax changing the solenoid in their next models but still fails is a design defects. Solenoid is one cause, my thinking was delayed shutter but no test to prove it.
I am ending this thread and thank you for your time with me.

No I did not test any electrical or mechanical parts - in photography is just my hobby and trying to research the cause of defect/s if possible If I can beat the odds.
I always read topics on this forum and evaluate what the members opinions - because it matters- and maybe ask for more details and evaluate their findings.

Well a metal of magnetic permeability property is strongly magnetized and can cause delay to disconnect might be one cause - no question with that because we do not know the composition.

If you have topic on Shutter lag testing - appreciated if you can give.

K-S2 Aperture Block Failure

We differ views about the problem but I have here another way to figure out:
When a very new electric fan and any speed is pressed, the impeller rotates right away, but after few years of use pressing any speed will takes few seconds to rotate the impeller . This is because electromagnetic induction in the coil is having static extra charge that delays the function of the coil to produce electromagnet - thus fraction of second delay is a factor.
Any metal if you wound a copper wire around it and put electric charge on it, it will induce electromagnet on the metal and the edge of the metal will attract to nearest opposite poles - metal like the function of the plunger. What will be the cause that this plunger will be stuck? One reason is prolong electric charge on the coil and the plunger can not disconnect due to electromagnet it holds and go back to its position.
There is no such solenoid received extra voltage, the voltage supply to the coil is fixed in the circuit.
I did it in viewfinder and live views yields the same result, not considering the mechanical nature of the system how it works.
I also read from Pentax summary of ABF cause is due to aging of camera cause the ABF, usually after warranty is gone.
I am not contradicting your opinion only just expressing my views.

K-S2 Aperture Block Failure

I can not fully understand your explanation, however I have sample here to explain:
Indoor, M mode, 28-105 lens, Shutter speed 1/6, ISO 3200, f22
Live view is dark because aperture is closed, but when clicked give nice photo and no ABF, therefore solenoid worked and diaphragm opened.
Increased speed to 1/500- there dark photo occurs because the diaphragm opening is too late.
Solenoid plunger is not the culprit but the whole coil and plunger when it reached the early fatigue state, electromagnetic induction is delayed.

K-S2 Aperture Block Failure

Recently my KS2 with 2K clicks had aperture block failure and only solenoid valve replacement is well known remedy here in this forum.
The cost of replacing the solenoid is expensive than buying a smart phone that has no solenoid valve and good photo overall.
I changed the manual lens and set to mode M and speed of 1/5 - Zoom - no aperture block failure indoor or outdoor occurs.
My analyses is that the faster the speed of aperture opening - there the aperture is delayed opening and causing ABF.

I don't have the lens with F1.8 to F22 to test it but I believed that aperture and solenoid is not the culprit. It works good in some instances is bad. The time ( speed ) of exposure make sense to me and investigate further. I will go beyond auto mode and the future will tell until i found the cause of the failure. Your ideas are appreciated.

Thanks mark, I do not know how to include the data. All was taken auto mode, afternoon sunny outside the room and the camera sets all the parameters.
I just want to know why black photo occurs at some of my photos but not all are black, all in auto mode.

One photo with out dark part and the other with dark part. Do you think this is a failure of aperture or the light sensor ( pixels ) not activated to compose the photo. Needs your analysis.

This forum should ask the appropriate government agency to let pentax ricoh to recall all cameras affected by so called aperture block, sensor defect or black photo whatsoever.

Let this camera send to failed museum to go with kodak, yashica, etc..

I don't set up metering because it is in full auto mode.

Is there any news from class action lawsuit against ricoh?
