You can not measure the current in the battery unless the current is flowing in the circuitry. New chargeable battery takes maximum voltage and maximum current and holds them longer more than a 4 years old battery because the cells wear and tear usage. Determine how much recordable images can a battery takes ( from manual ) except using flash and previews of images that gives you idea how long the battery last. A new chargeable battery is not the same as 4 year old or more and diminish its functionality after a year of use. Never retain an old battery.

" by west penn... FA lenses you need to manually set the aperture rather than have it in the "A" position, then use the green button to set the shutter speed, "
KS2 set aperture manually of pentax FA 28-105 mm F4-5.6 , the LCD shows red " F _ _" flashing and shutter will not fire. If set to " A" position everything will work OK. My finding was some photos are blurry as if shutter speed is slow in auto mode. I thought it was caused by hand shake but some are good and some are bad. Old lens need what - in order to function well. No aperture block appears.

The first photo the focus is behind the grass or at the wall which is not so clear.
The second photo - the bird - the focus is at front as seen on the left side of the bird.
Maybe your lens adjustment is the reason for not having sharp image. Return back to zero adjustment and work with different AF active area.

The program went bad and carried down the previous settings. Reset the camera. Use full auto mode.

The last photo is hard to determine the plane of focus because the object is not plane. You asked "what do you mean by flat planar subject" . Take a photo in which the object of focus plane( like a wall ) is perpendicular to the axis of lens. By this we can clearly determine the depth of field.
Most likely is that your lens needs a fine adjustment to determine the front focus, plane of focus and back focus.

The darker photo is caused by shake of the camera, except there is post processing done.
There is dust in the photo. Dust affects the sensor function. Determine where is it coming from.

This is a public place where questions, opinions are discussed and answered with or with out reference to Pentax camera bodies or lens. The response is quite impressive so I say sorry for those offended by my posting. There is no such rules as Pentax only, so open to all who participate and give their views.

One guide is set your camera to Av mode ISO auto range 100-3200 for indoor trials.
When you turn the edial it changes the speed.
Slow speed from .3 sec. to 6000 sec is shown and can be selected depending on the F number shown.
Or set to Tv mode to change only the speed you like.

One concern about long focal lens is that if fully zoomed in - the depth of field is shallow and the aperture speed is slow.
My choice is 28 mm for landscape.
