In my weaker moments of considering DSLR as opposed to film I considered the kits , the prices.
In the end to me it was like starting out in golf. Buy a cheap package set and only you have outplayed the clubs you have( I.e. the clubs are the problem and not your game) don’t buy the expensive name brand.
To me( just my opinion) only when the weakness of shots are solely attributed to the equipment and not the equipment - stick with the kit.
Just my humble opinion.
Right now I have an super program with a 50/1.4 and Couple of zooms that came with the buy and am still a long way from mastering what i have.

My old back is getting to make it hard to bend over for tripod shots while holder shutter cable
I see Them on eBay but most say for “ spotmatic. I think they are “ 953” model.
What fits a super program?

Doesn’t surprise me at all. I am a rank amateur who has three cameras - each fir a unique purpose- A superprogram . An Olympus stylus zoom and a Canon WP-1 ( for obvious reasons.)
I read a lot and catch “ what’s in your bag” on JCH. I have come to the conclusion that 90% of those folks are more concerned with showing off they have the cash to own a Leica or a Contax or thier billingham bag more than . anything.

Thrift books is where I got my Adams books. They were labeled “ very good” and truly were. ---------- Post added 02-06-18 at 10:49 PM ---------- It was just an observation. I do like hard copy also and have an extensive library. And I am a library rat. Back to where I get my photo info. My source is Apple news. With that app you can search for and have as many sources as you want updated each day ready to read.
I watch very little tv live in the woods so I can not get a news paper thus Apple news is readyfor me each morning with my coffee. Beside one top news, one political, health, NatGeo, an brit site “ country living, scientific American, Smithsonian , Sapien and a couple others I have numerous photo sites I read each day .they are all updated on a regular basus( most daily or at worst weekly. Places like fstopper, petapixel, photobloggers, black and white , Japan camerahunter, in addition you can tailor so I gave one subject site on film photographer.
Works fir me, it’s like having a custom news paper each morning

Yeah . What really brought it to mind was that I just got a Barnes and noble gift cert. I found the ansel Adam books 1 & 2 on techniques and the " the camera" in excellent condition for under $10 each . In fact I got book 2 for $2.88. So even with shipping = $10.

Perhaps this has been discussed before.
I find it paradoxical that we film shooters must resort to nearly entirely to digital media to find anything to read while the digital shooters have numerous analog ( I.e. Magazines ) at thier disposal.

Here's my story ( and quest for advice from you folks):
First thanks to those that replied up in the new comers board.
I am preparing to start back into photography again . I was never any more than a rank amateur at best. I have a super program that I used mostly on full auto in my time as a field engineer siting radar sites . I put the camera away back in mid 80's. Except for family snaps.
Now that I am retired and have more time it is time .
⁃ film advance on super program won't work and am going to send it along with 70-210 and 1.4/50 to Eric for rehab.
⁃ Plan on also getting a point and shot film to carry . Would welcome thoughts on make model to look for. I saw a Konica C35AF at thrift store. While I gave no idea if it works, it is very clean, no ding, dents, wear, clean battery compartment clean
⁃ Would like to eventually develop and print myself but need to take baby steps so plan is :
- start with b&w in the SP and carry a point and shoot for color family pics etc
- learn to develop the b&w at home and send color our for now
- have a printer and computer to print for now. Buy a scanner ( Edson 600 ?)
⁃ I have a tripod . Bogen 3021 w/ 3126 head ( didn't remember it being so heavy )
⁃ Looking at eBay for winder A and 35-70 lens and some type of remote . What other lens and other equipment should I add as I progress. I live in country on 30 acres of mostly woods. We garden and travel . Last year to Paris, this year to England. We travel in winter just because we are devoted to the flowers and garden and still at home in growing months
Now time to learn and enjoy..
As I read the forum you folks really know your stuff and would appreciate thoughts , suggestion or whatever on my approach.

Hi everyone,
Happy to be here and look forward to receiving and learning from you all.
Background. 72 years old Retired a couple years back. From a camera standpoint I have only owned Pentax over the years. Started with a Spotmatic during my time with my Uncle Sam in Southeast Asia during late 60's. I was never more than a casual user taking travel and family pic. Last Pentax I bought was a SuperProgram bought with1.4 50 and the 70-210. I bought it in 1981 . At time I was traveling the southwest and pacific rim with a AF radar siting team as the civil engineer .
But got away from that job and photography for very long time. Now time to go back as wife and I travel quite a lot. I debated long and hard on reviving my superprogram or buying a new DSLR. Was surprised that most drug store type film developers ( read Walmart) do not return negatives.
Being on limited budget and a pretty old nostalgia old fashioned kind of guy ( we don't have and don't want internet connectivity other than ATT- spotty reception at that- cellphone and mini iPad) I looked cost of decent entry DSLR with kit lenses - Printer etc. I have chosen to rebirth my film days and combine with scanner and printer with eventual home development. I can get good used camera equipment as I progress.
First step is the camera . It has a film advance problem. I have contacted Eric Henderson. .. all I hear is that he is top of line in repairing/restoring Pentax.
Again I look forward to the forum.
Regards
Denny
