DA* 300 F/4; 15mm F/4 Limited; Pentax 1.7af Teleconverter Asking Price
800.00 USD Item Location
Sacramento, California (United States) Item Description
Hi,
I've got two lenses and a teleconverter for sale. All items are in outstanding condition with no scratches, haze, or fungus. All were purchased new by me (original owner). The DA*300 has had a 77mm protective filter on it since bought (included). The 15mm Limited is the original version, not the updated nano-coated one. The 1.7af teleconverter was bought new from Japan some years ago. This TC will work with both automatic and manual lenses, though auto lenses only operate at wide-open.
All have been carefully stored in a dry box when not in use, and carefully cared for when used. These only have very slight signs of wear, mostly from mounting the lens hood or caps. Photos are below, and I can provide additional pictures if necessary. These are great items; I'm just paring down my photographic equipment.
Any questions, please ask.

You've probably got this one on the to "do list", but seriously. Had a friend come back from Madagascar a while back with malaria. Caught it when working in Madagascar, went active while he was working in Mexico some weeks later. Not good.
As for lenses, I'd think 60-250 or perhaps something like a Tamron/Sigma 70-200 +TC, just for speed/reach/flexibility at the long end. I would do that over a 200 prime, even though I've had the DA*200 and it's a fantastic lens. Your 55-300 would work, but you might find the f/5.8 a bit limiting. Tack on a Raynox or Canon 500D and you're set for macro; add the 16-50 and you're good for all else. Notice that the K7/16-50/60-250 would make a two lens kit likely to cover most everything, and sealed. A flash is not a bad idea, and may be more useful than extra lenses depending.
My philosophy here is that less is more. Fewer things to carry, fewer lenses to change/think about, and less to protect.
My $.02,
Andrew

Don't know if this made the board, but just caught it on CNN's website. Basically a Fresno school system employee, Rick Norsigian, appears to have recovered 65 glass plates of some of Adam's earliest work, once thought lost in a fire. Trust CNN to focus on the $ value of the plates, but still very cool if true. The story can be found at: Experts: Ansel Adams photos found at garage sale worth $200 million - CNN.com

Last time I was in Italy I was using a superzoom. I took very few pictures at the long end, but often found myself wishing for wide. Lot's of very scenic, very cramped spaces ;). I'd think the 10-20 and 17-70 would cover most of your needs very nicely. If you wanted a third lens, either a fast prime or something long. I don't see the 28-105 offering you much that's not already covered by your 17-70. My .02.

OK, funny story. I was trying to rehabilitate a yellowish 75-150mm M zoom using a UVb light. It was one of the self-ballasted fluorescents that you can use in a regular lamp, not a tube. As a consequence, I had the lens sitting with the mount toward the lamp and the filter ring down on a mirror to maximize the amount of light bouncing through the lens as suggested in various forums posts.
Long story short, two nights ago some small bug apparently landed on the lens, got confused, and wandered it's way down inside following the reflected light! Imagine my consternation when I pick up the lens in the morning and see something crawling around inside:eek:. Last night I capped the front element and left the lens again. The little guy either crawled back out or at least had the good grace to die and stay stuck in some interior corner, but at least I can't see it any more. And you wonder how dust gets in these lenses?
Sorry I don't have any photos, but figured some might appreciate the humor and the cautionary tale.
Cheers,
Andrew

Free bump on a great lens. Not only takes beautiful photos at a distance, it also focuses quite close as well.

As Marc and others mentioned, there are a number of inexpensive options other than reversing your main lens. Macro rings will let you "stack" lenses by mating them filter ring to filter ring, only run $10-15, and let you use your camera and aperture normally. You can also get very high magnifications, if that's your goal. John Shaw's "Close-ups in Nature" gives a nice discussion of this and other options.

I got a used laboratory dry-box off of ebay, complete with hygrometer; just add silica. Nice because it's also clear polycarbonate and you can see what's going on inside, but the ammo boxes are undoubtedly a fair bit cheaper and stronger.

Tripod sits in the closet, batteries, chargers, bags, filters etc. on the shelf of same. Since I'm living in the tropics, my lenses all sit in a dry-box because of the humidity.

Interesting. I had a similar problem, but using the 2x-s with a DA 300. Ended up either doing as Adam suggested and setting EV comp, or just shot manually after adjusting the initial exposure to get it correct. For some reason, I don't think it was an issue in all lighting conditions, but unfortunately I don't have my K20d any longer to double check. Intersting to hear a reason for it.

PentaxForums.com Marketplace Listing Item for Sale
K20D (Body Only) Asking Price
$425 Item Location
Utah, United States Item Description
K20D, body only. This camera was purchased new two years ago and is in excellent shape. There are no scratches on the body or LCDs, and both top and back LCD have had protective covers since day one. There is some slight brassing on the flash mount, and a few dust specks in the viewfinder (not the sensor). I continue to use this camera regularly, and it currently has a bit less than 20k actuations on the shutter. Price include the camera, original box, documentation, manual, software, eye-piece cover, charger, and one original and one aftermarket battery, both of which hold a good charge. I will cover both paypal fees and insured shipping to the continental US. Foreign purchasers must pay their own shipping.
This is just an excellent, durable camera. It has served me well and has many years left in it. I'll try and post some photos tomorrow. Are you the original owner of the item being sold?

Pentax DA* 200mm Asking Price
$750 Item Location
Utah, United States Item Description
Selling a Pentax DA* 200mm lens, complete with original box and paperwork. This lens was purchased new one year ago and is in perfect mechanical condition. Autofocus (SDM) is flawless, optics are clear, clean, and w/o scratches, haze, or fungus. The lens itself was consistently used in conjunction with a 77mm protectiive filter (not included). The only things that keeps me from rating the lens as mint is a small scratch on the rear body near the green metallic band (see photo) and the fact that I've lost the small plastic window piece of the lens hood that is removed while accessing rotating filters. Because of the cosmetic issues, the asking price of the lens is $750, which is an incredible bargain relative to new. Buyers are responsible for shipping, insurance, and paypal fees, plus customs if applicable. I will ship worldwide via US postal service, and you can use their postage calculator to estimate shipping costs to your destination. Attached below are photos of the lens itself, plus a few down-and-dirty photos taken today, and others from late last year. Some of the birds show what this lens can do with a teleconverter. Again, just an amazing lens, especially at this size and weight.

Just following up on Marc's suggestion, another possibility to consider is an external USB hard drive. As long as you have access to a computer (e.g., an internet cafe or your hotel) you can download files from your cards to the HD. Two memory cards and even a cheap external HD will have more than enough storage for your two weeks while still being small and portable. I also regularly go up to a week with 2x8gb cards, but that's me.
Cheers,
Andrew

Can anyone tell me what the length of the 60-250 is when fully retracted and when fully zoomed out? I've seen photo comparisons, but all the official stats only provide one number (6.6 inches/168mm). Thanks for any feedback.
Sincerely,
Andrew

Hi JP,
I've got a K20, not a K7, but I think the principles are all the same. My memory is that the camera only asks you to input a focal length if the SR is turned on, since its mostly looking for that info to accurately compute the amount of shake reduction to use (No idea about EXIF). When you turn the SR off, and then the camera off and on again, it forgets the previous input focal length and doesn't care to get a new one. When you are using SR, you want to input the adjusted focal length as other posters mentioned (1.7*300, or 500mm). Also, it shouldn't really matter what your lens is set to (MF or AF), since it is cut off from the camera by the TC. Although it's not supposed to make a difference with the SDM motors, I always turn the lens to MF on the off chance it saves some wear and tear.
Cheers,
Andrew
