I have pondered this one myself. Yes, that GPS is wonderful but I don't see myself using it. Astrophotography is not something I have ever tried. Living in a big city wit lots and lots of light pollution works against that idea for me. As for GPS co-ordinates inside my pictures, meh. My memory is still good enough that I can remember where I was when I took a particular shot. Giving up the built-in flash for all of the above makes the K3 II something I have to think long and hard about.
One does get a whole lot of K3 II pixel shift goodness in return, but is it worth it? Wonderful for very static landscapes, taken with a tripod, but for what else? I am still trying to come up with an answer to that one.

If guys in Ricoh/Pentax still have some sanity, that even brief look at the market clearly shows, that K3/K3II successor is now about two years behind expected schedule. They also need to realize the age of DA* sudden death motor lenses and do complete overhaul of that line to keep this system competitive.
K3II is in fact still K3 just with that horribly swapped GPS instead of flash and some mainly software-based features.
FF battle was joined without proper weapons (lenses) and K-1s are no more selling like first 3-5 months. APS-C market is the traditional source of profit in large numbers. K70 is great, KP is just overpriced retro camera and K3II still in place is a shame. We used to have great bodies like K10/K20/K5 that went beyond what competitors offered, but now K3II is obsolete and still not replaced.

The was a new CEO appointed in troubled times.
I bet his first move was to simply stop all investment projects and then only release them one by one after serious checking.
From what we heard multiple lenses were planned to appear much earlier this year. It all got halted.
You will be lucky if you get the one lens this year. It is at least a lost year for the ones who wait for products (which is at least silly to begin with).
Maybe everybody was ordered to stop working on PK and invent a new mount? Or a new GR? Or Theta?
In the end it is about the one area where nobody on any forum ever had even a minor clue: what drives profitability for camera makers? Only they know. And given the fact that they all together did not perform well in recent years means that even with much better data they are not necessarily doing smart things.
I say 50/50 that no new lenses appear in 2017.

It's not that I'm trying to say the American market is huge or vital to Ricoh unto itself or where the world revolves for them - think that would be Japan, but at this point, I think Ricoh needs to make as big a splash as possible in all markets when it premiers a new product. If I were in charge of rolling out new product and my job was on the line in the form of survival of the company I worked for, I'd want to make sure all my distribution channels were in place and ready to move. If you look at the number of closings in the months of September and October for B&H and Adorama, you would potentially miss a lot of days of sale and promotion. Yeah, I know Nikon and Canon just rolled out new stuff in this time frame. Perhaps another reason not to be pushing for your small part of the market while the folks who dominate the market have everyone's focus.
Besides, this is just a speculative thread at this point, since those who know can't and won't say, and the rest of us got nothing. In the light of that, I'm merely making idle chit chat tossing out a cavalier thought about why some really savvy exec at Ricoh might say, "hey, wait until they are back in full swing and have everyone hot to buy as the U.S. rolls into the Black Friday/Cyber Monday sales." But what do I know? I'm just some schmuck with a (Pentax) camera and an internet connection and some time to kill. Don't take any of this too seriously....

I'm sure these lenses are impressive. And I'm sure it's fun to own a concave lens. But as an optical designer, I can tell you that beginning your lens design by diverging the beams is not something that is commonly done, and for good reason. In fact, part of me doubts that the front element really is concave, I've never seen it.
Calling a concave surface a "new design enhancement is preposterous.
Because they do. Witness the 70-200, 16-85, 28-105, 150-450, 60-250, 31, 43, 77, 21, 15, 70, etc.

Good idea?
Looking at the latest news from the industry ....
850 reasons to add a "plus one" here or to comment so Ricoh may stop listening to the nay-sayers and pessimists,
(oh no ! maybe RICOH goes bankrupt if we demand costy features!!!)
that would buy a Pentax anyway.
(Just because we were big once, there is PENTAX written on the cam and we also offer mid-format)
As said before, I dont render dat good for the PENTAX brand.(OR k-mount system ...)
(Reason why i always insisted on less MP for our first FF was, that a Nikon shortly after the release of the Pentax Full Frame, -with the specs of the now new born 850- was as inevitable as foreseeable...)
You only have to keep one thing in mind:
Pentax is DOOMED anyway. :) if you would excuse me again... i think i may have to return to "Castle Wolfenstein" now. ;) |

You should be flogged, tarred, feathered, & ridiculed for thinking of increased AF & buffer performance nonsense! It's all about jamming in all the megagagagagagagpixels! :hmm: Hmmm....:confused:
Maybe I'll join you in getting flogged, tarred, feathered & ridiculed to, since I want the same thing. ;) BETTER AF TRACKING, BETTER AF LOCK CONFIRMATION, & A LARGER BUFFER SIZE!! SCREW THE MEGAPIXEL INCREASE!
It's pretty sad to see some mirrorless cameras running AF circles around the current generation of Pentax cameras. THAT'S MIRRORLESS CAMERAS! THE "SLOW FOCUSING" MIRRORLESS CAMERAS!
Yeah! We're stirring the pot! :p

I think maybe save a lens for CP+. I'm hoping for Sept/Oct we get K3 III, K-1 silver or gun metal edition, and FF primes!

KP is a nice camera.. but as we all know is not the K3ii replacement, and IMO the price was way to high for a camera that is not an APS-C "top of the line" like K3 were/is.. so maybe sales werent that good, not because of quality but because of price.. the new $950 price sounds much better than the original $1199.... but who knows..

I have this camera with a range of Sony lenses. Previously I had most Pentax DSLR from the ist-D to the K3 with a wide selection of lenses. Also used Canon 5d's and Nikon d800's. The A9 continuous AF is really revolutionary compared to DSLRs. Compared to Pentax C-AF the difference is extremely in favour of the Sony ( in scenarios where a k3 would get 0% hit rate the A9 gets 100%). The AF-C even work incredibly well in 4k 30p and 1080 120p video. If you are satisfied with Pentax AF then don't try the A9 as it is probably better not to know what you are missing out on if you don't want to be tempted to buy more equipment.
By the way I don't even shoot sports but mostly street photography. Yet the C-AF and Eye AF performance are just useful in so many scenarios where you need to get a useful shot of a fleeting moment. It has made the biggest difference to increasing my ratio of good shots than any camera upgrade in the past. Using a DSLR after this camera seems only to make sense for nostalgic reasons.
I think non-electronics focused DSLR companies like Pentax are really going to be relegated to ever smaller niche customers in the future given the increasing technology performance gap emerging with Sony.
I agree with some previous comments about the a9 being overpriced though. The manufacturing cost can't be that much higher than the A7Rii. The build quality is fine but does not quite give the same impression of robustness as a K-1 for example. The A9 build quality is similar to A7rII which is based on the A7ii which is a $1400 camera. However given the completely unique performance the camera offers I think Sony are justified in charging a premium since there is no competition at the moment. Anyway, the camera performance is really fantastic.

I'd love four* of these A9s. I'd mount one in each direction on my Ferrari to use as high performance dash cams. They'll be sync'd via wifi to the Microsoft Surface Studio I use as a dash computer. I need to keep track of the ingrates who get too close to me when I'm in the McD's drive through ordering my Happy Meals. The plebs just don't respect Ferrari's these days! *Make that five**, one aimed up so I can get the license of the birds who poop on my ride. **Better go with six, one aimed down too so I can record that pothole that blew out one of my tires. |

Technical reasons aside, I kinda want Sony to fail in cameras big time. Doesn't appear that will happen but I think it could be real bad for the market if the main sensor maker also becomes the dominant camera maker.

As long as Pentax is working on it, there is hope. They have everything lined up already. All they need to do is improve upon the AF tracking abilities & give better focus confirmation through the viewfinder. I'm not expecting a D500 or 7D Mark II camera, but hopefully it will outperform the D7200/D7500 in AF or be very close to their AF performance. If they need until September of next year to pack the upcoming APS-C flagship with more excellence & win than the Nikon D7200/D7500 & the Canon 80D, I'm willing to wait until then. Who knows. They might even "left field" us with a new "high performance" KAF4 lens or 2 to go with it. I do highly doubt that will happen. though.
I should probably be flogged, tarred, & feathered for even thinking of such AF performance nonsense. :p

A full-645 is quite likely unless PhaseOne has a contractual lock on the supply of Sony's 100 MP full-645 sensor. A full-645 sensor lets Pentax beat Fuji and Hasselblad's new MILCs because those cameras are physically incompatible with full-frame 645.
Sony also has a 100 MP crop-645 on it's roadmap but it's not slated for release until 2018.
Pentax has explicitly said they don't consider video a high priority. Moreover, video with larger sensors is especially hard to do. Disinterest and technical challenges seem to make video-MF unlikely.

I shoot weddings and the A7II shutter is loud. Louder than the K-1 which is my primary camera.
Yes. Ricoh really needs to work on AF. It is much improved from the K-7 days, but it is still a generation or two behind when it comes to tracking a moving subject. If you are shooting a stationary subject, the K-1 with D-FA* 70-200mm is plenty fast enough and very accurate. Shooting the bride walking down the isle in bad light with a 31mm LTD and it hunts way too much. Mirrorless AF has surpassed what Ricoh has to offer. Hopefully Rich is dedicated enough the K-mount to invest in the needed technology. Face detection and eye-AF are major advantages if you are in the business of shooting people.
