really important firmware suggestions

To make things clear:
I only wanted to bump some minds, to rethink what actually would make sense and I am glad, that at least Adam came up with something...
a more connected UI is one of those big picture things...and i am totally happy that someone dares to say that.

But actually I started this thread so users think about the small things, that really matter and add up... not so much the big-vision thread.
Though admittedly a more interconnected firmware is a nice thing to have...
I loved Samsungs NX1 firmware... although it looked a bit overloaded at first sight, everything had its place, was easy to find it looked and felt really clean and tidy and offered so much intuitivity...
and having something like TIZEN OS would open doors to real interconnectivity that nearly no other maker offers at the moment... chances are not so bad that we may go androidish somewhen in the future, since the bot landed on Theta already (in company with Qualcomm Snapdragon CPUs)

But all that is not the point, thing is this was really only meant to rethink where SMALL improvements could be made, (that some may think are niche or not important) but actually critical.

admitted: That behaviour I am used to (dialing in ISO with holding the button and turning the front e-dial) may be a taste-thing... (so it may be something that i want because I am used to do it that way, though same result can be achieved nearly as easy without holding it down.)

but I insist, that locking your pictures should be way easier.
and the easiest way would be to lock pictures by AE-L button press in Review-Mode

and this is in no way a niche improvement
... :) NEVER EVER.

and it's the same with Live-View Time-Out. :) godd.. just imagine, how I feel everytime I have an "out of house" product photography job...

and i set everything right, placed the product where i want it, changed some things on the table, and think "Ah... thank god, I dont have to touch the camera any more... now it should be perfect, just let me check back on the display, then i can release it with my remote...
back at the camera.... beeeeep. wrong thought. display back in info mode.

another thing that immediately comes to my mind, when thinkin about live-view:
The actual Live-View EV-behaviour....
There really should be an option to make the camera show an even lit Live-View Picture when the cam is set to M (manual mode) but the settings dialed in would underexpose...

Its nice to have that WYSIWYG LV... but it would be also nice to be able to turn that off and force the cam to always show an even lit picture in LV mode...
Because I am pretty sure that I am not the only one who prefers M mode in Studio when doing product photos.
And since most photographers that dont have a cornucopia, often work with flashguns instead of Studio-flashes that cost app. 1200 Dollars at least per unit.

So you dont have an adjustment-light.
... RESULT...?
---->>> having to switch ISO all the time and touching and touching and touching the camera again and again... If you ever did serious product photography, you will know, that the slightest movement of the frame can really nag at your nerves... If you have found your framing you will want to touch your cam as little as possible. Because even if you have a solid head and mounted it like rock solid. every time you attempt to touch the camera, your flow gets lost. and it opens the possibility to move something else. especially if you dont work in a hangar as big as a football field.

And it cant be that difficult to implement an option in the menu where one can turn ON and OFF EV always 0 in LV...
everybody who works stationary and often uses Live-View would appreciate those improvements sooner or later.

so, this is indeed essential.

another one that would also come to my mind, but even MHS renders that one not so important:
aperture preview instead of refocus on remotes 2nd button

and again: it would be one of the easiest things to accomplish, to make AE-L behave like LV button when you review your pictures, but just in a way that it locks... and how much can it cost to print a blue little key next to that button???
There is an old saying: Pennies add up to Pounds.

comprehension so far from what i can contribute:

adjustable Live-View Time-Outoption to turn off "setting-sensitive" LIVE-VIEW
lock pictures by AE-L button press in Review-Mode
option to turn on aperture preview instead of refocus on remotes 2nd button

since the thread from beholder3 has "sunk to the ocean floor"

Its maybe time to start over and keep this topic alive.... because we should consider that more important, than talking rumors to death.

so here are few things that come to my mind immediately when i think about my Pentax bodies and modifications that are possible by a bit of firmware tinkering:

Live-View Time-Out Value changeable by user!!!! godd... i hate that, when I am doing studio work and that darn display goes back to info screen...

Thats something so essential...

and i dont have the slightest clue why there should be a sense in this behaviour that, the camera refuses to alter the ISO Value when i hold the ISO-Button on my K-70 backup-body and turn its "front e-dial"... *headshake*
That would really come in handy when one wants to keep his/her eye on the viewfinder while altering the ISO Value...

and another thing that totally freaks me out:
It is still not possible to lock/write-protect the pictures by pressing AE-L button when in review mode...

those are basic flaws...that really need attention. way before "RAW-Histograms??????" and "Catch-in-Focus with back Foc...???"

BTW: There should be an option to save "In-Camera RAW development settings" so you can apply them to other photos... or just an option screen when you are done, that asks you:
Do you want to develop other photos with the settings that now have been written to card? before it asks you:
"Continue developing?"

also rating the pix already in-cam right after shooting a series of pictures, would also be nice and not very difficult to program.

AFAIK, as a photojournalist, you may want to use a 20-35mm lens at events that are overrun by the masses and in rooms where people are piled up to the ceiling.

Since there is no zoom lens with the exact same range with a PK mount and silent drive...
You may want to use what comes closest to that range, what would work out to be
either the

"FA J 18-35mm F4-5.6"
(possibly cheap to have... if you find one, though for sure no "top notch IQ"-lens)

or the more costy
"DFA 15-30mm F2.8 ED WR SDM"

if you work with full frame...

if you have an APS-C body --->

Sigma 17-50mm F2.8 EX DC OS HSM would be a nice (not so wide)and though fast, not so costy option.(if bought used)
Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 DC HSM "Art" -- will cost you a bit more, but that lens is darn fast.

Others may tell you that zoom range is not right for what you want, but actually its up to you to decide.

Hey solitudebound, are you sure you didn't "oversharpen" the pictures?

Because actually I think that is what this mysterious "sharpening" feature does... (Creating the illusion of more sharpness... But zooming in close, you will see it actually takes away details)
And if something like that would happen to me, I wouldn't only set "sharpen" to ZERO.
I would also check the color profile I am using to see if if the sharpness setting in there somehow got yanked to EX-S and to the most possible amount of sharpening...

Like I said it's all speculation...

And neither you, me nor everybody else not deeply involved into the business of involved companies, will know for sure.

But recap your own post... aren't you actually blaming yourself when you say that YOU know whats on the table and others don't? :hmm:

And looking at the pic of Sigmas new 50mm 1.4 and next to it the picture of the 50mil DFA to come...
Ahem... I would say this looks pretty close...

But again: Who cares as long as good glass is available?

blabla... actually they did and they do.. there are contracts between those companies and those companies have agreements of consent and write contracts about what they will do and with which partner they will exchange technology, knowledge, etc.. conditions in such an agreement often include countertrades (or counter-deals if you wish so) or ... as you mentioned already ... license fees are paid.

:lol::lol: For sure it is not very likely they would just take it. ;)

And the backwards engineering, and modifiying to a certain point from where no patent takes effect is also possible ...

Talking about Zeiss, again: I am pretty sure Zeiss didn't dump the SMC recipe they got in exchange for taking lens design-knowledge over to PENTAX.
its now called "T*"...
There is one R&D relationship between Pentax an Zeiss, that is known to the public... that was in the 70ies.
(if they had something going on now or SIGMA has a relationship with "PENTAX-RICOH Imaging" who do you actually think, would tell you these days?)

Companies did exchange technology in the past and they do now.

And no most of the time you will not now, because companies don't want the consumers to know about "industrial arrangements".

And since most likely: neither you, me or any other forum addict on PF is actually named Ethan Hunt, Dark Dante, Astra or Kevin Mitnick... we will never know what is going on behind the curtains.

BUT KNOWING ALL THIS, THERE IS STILL ONE QUESTION LEFT:

Who cares ? ? ?

Ricoh GRZ coming soon?
Posted By camyum
Replies: 85

Yes, and still it would be more versatile than a prime 28mm equiv. lens... and the GR already "only" offers F:2.8 ... where is the loss if RICOH would offer a GRZ with that Fuji-lens design?
if its F:4 or F:4.5 at 50mm it would be cool for me.
Shallow depth of field is overrated... and IMHO most people overrate the versatility of good compact cameras... No RX100 or G1X "which mark so ever" could ever replace a K-Mount DSLR(if you know how to use DSLRs and own the right optics) this starts with using flashes, etc...(cam-body to flashgun weight ratio is ridiculous and difficult to handle)
and yes, there are photographers that do pro-shootings with phones... but that is only because they like that competition... in 99.9% of all cases you will see professional photographers with APS-C or FF sensor MILCs... that are a bit bigger then the flash transmitters you mount on them.

So no, neither a RX1 R mark II nor a Leica Q or that @the-moment non existant FF Ricoh GRZ will make you the next Mario Testino.

Those are just compact cameras, but if you like photography you would appreciate it if the FF sensor comes back to compact cameras... since such a sensor would deliver good dynamic range, better IQ etc.
and those are things that satisfy hobby photographers and pro-"street photographers" the most.
And i would welcome a FF-zoom-compact, because IT IS more versatile... even if "only" 28-56mm...and even on film compacts i sometimes feel more plasticity/clarity(or better: spatiality) on FF then on smaller formats.

Again: No one says it has to beat(in every way) a DSLR... with a 24-70 F:2.8... neither a RX1R nor a Leica Q and certainly no G1XIII will. NEVER! that is AFAIK not possible(yet) at a compact size.

but the dynamic range of such a FF compact zoom would be huge, no matter if you whine because you "ONLY" have F:5.4 at 56mm or something alike, or not.

and ogl is somehow right... indeed 56mm focal length, would get the designation "85mm equivalent" if used on a Crop sensor...

Nonetheless, I would be also satisfied if its "only" APS-C... since that would make most people happy, and it is as I annoted it above... Such a compact-camera will never replace a good and balanced MILC.

But i still like the IDEA of RICOH producing the first FF compact zoom. :)
That could mean another product selling like hotcake ... next to Theta... (because sometimes its not about being perfect, but only about catching the flow)

lenses to me look like popular "adult-film"-stars...nose from a swiss plastic surgeon, torso refined in the u.s.(i guess you know where this is going)

you can find them with that Studio-label or another... has always been this way... pentax borrowed lens designs from zeiss... zeiss borrowed multicoating recipes from pentax. Kenko produced for Tamron...

There where sigma lenses that had the same optical formula as cosinon lenses AFAIK... Cosinon and Vivatar was nearly the same...(kindofa Samyang - Rokinon thing...)
I bet some hair that most of those Sony FE-Zeiss lenses never saw a german engineers hands ...
Same with that Schneider Kreuznach Lenses, that Samsung used to "produce"(or better rebrand) ... those where actually PENTAX designs.

I guess the only company that only sells its own lens designs is Canon...(though they DO outsource production... AFAIK only L lenses get clipped together on japanese ground)

And its pretty much the same with todays Pentax lenses...
AFAIK only *(Star)-lenses and ltd. are 100% pentax design...

In the end I dont care about that, ... only thing that counts is that the IQ the lenses deliver is good.
(I already own a 85mm 1.4 DG HSM Sigma lenses. and by no means i would trade it for the Pentax FA 85mm 1.4, and i hardly doubt any PENTAX DFA 85 will interest me... be it a star lens or not)

hmm... could be sooner,
could be a bit later...

as late as the coming spring.... (April 2018??)
or maybe RICOH play X-mas crasher with a new FF model.

... about FF... I have not heard so much rumors, but I remember a discussion, where, kenspo(northern europe ambassador) answered in that
"hahaha... wait till you see, pal"-way when somebody stated, that we may not see a full frame any time soon.

Ricoh GRZ coming soon?

IMHO a rather short zoom range would be sufficient.... on a FF compact...
and since you guys doubt that a rather fast digital FF zoom compact-camera can be done...
... I want to suggest you to take a closer look at the added picture and google 3 words ---> FUJI NATURA CLASSICA!!!!!
the cam is: 109.5mm×62.0mm×36.0mm
the Ricoh GR is: 117mm×61mm×34.7mm
so it should be possible to keep a FF RICOH GRZ(oom) nearly at the same size.

and NO, NO, NO... this is not an APS camera.

I have absolutely no idea, what could be difficult in making such a design digital...
and when I am thinking about how technology and everything evolved, I am sure that lens design could be improved.
Though, I would be totally satisfied with the 28mm-56mm F:2.8-5.4 lens also...(fast enough for me and though not a very long reach, still more versatile than just a 28mil wide a.)

If you need more examples on small compact zooms, search for yourself.
(Especially because sometimes on pentaxforums.com the motto seems to be: "Let no good deed go unpunished...")

Question on memory cards

at the moment, I can assure you, that it doesnt make any sense to buy an SD-card that offers faster write speeds than 100MB/s, cause thats pretty much where UHS-I bus write speed tops out.

not a chance to profit from higher write speeds.

I would especially avoid to buy UHS-II cards, since i hope that PENTAX - RICOH Imaging shows a last bit of common sense
and switches to XQD very soon, since that is the memcard-technology of the future,
that already offers app. 500MB/s write speed at nearly the same pricing as 100MB/s writin mere UHS-I SD card...

and in its 2nd generation it will offer 8GBit/s write speed (that is one Gigabyte per second!!!) and more than 1TB capacity should be possible.

I suggest you to not invest too much and rather buy max. 16GB moderately fast SD cards.
Toshiba Exceria Pro N401 SDHC 16GB

... seems to be the best bang for the buck right now.

(not so sure how much capacitiy is supported by the K10D though)

Much Luck!

hmm... is that humor? or do you mean it? sry. I dont get your point. things are what things are. not more not less.
I just gave out info.

-- TTL is TTL
-- P-TTL is P-TTL .. and has some advantages over mere TTL (since the P-TTL protocol is not only about another metering method the AFAIK...)
but I wont break loose a discussion on that, nor will I take part of it. have fun!

So relax... I also own none of the 2 analogue P-TTL capable bodies, and everything is cool for me.

Nonetheless it would be cool to see a real modern K-Mount SLR like the K-1 that loads 135 film cartridges... and makes full use of KAF2, KAF3 and KAF4 lenses.
I maybe would hand out 600-800 bucks for such a cam. But I doubt there will be one any time soon.

hm... fast zoom lenses in a compact format not possible for FF compact or APS-C?

i render that wrong.
most things get done the way they are, because infrastructure to produce parts commonly used is already there .... And people love to believe in things that they already know.

Thing is RICOH as a brand and company showed that it can go its own ways, and if needed i am sure RICOH could be set up to produce its own sensors in 6 months from the point where a decision was made.

And from time to time things change... I guess RICOH could do such a camera. But I have doubts it will in the near future...

If you dont know fast analogue zoom compact cameras... pleas ask... I may tell you one or the other.

And since we are not moving back in time but forth, my good guess is, it may be possible to make it even a smaller than in the analogue era, since there is no thick 135mm film cartridge that must be loaded into a camera body.

I suggest you try the Pentax Z-1P... loads of functionality.

If you have read the manual, its easy to use ... 4fps
K-1 league

jokes aside... a real good camera... bit plasticky and misses P-TTL (only TTL) but its OK.

Another option is a camera not everybody knows it exists... The "Pentax *ist"
That is the analogue version of the "Pentax *ist D" :)

none of the two cameras will let you use your silent AF - you will have to focus manually...
where the latter offers you P-TTL, but both can control aperture(have AV) on lenses that dont have an aperture ring or are set to A(Auto)

I would wish for a new analogue body from PENTAX but i guess, the people at Ricoh-Imaging have other things to worry about right now.
(nonetheless it would be cool to see a film body one day, that can make full use of modern lenses and flash systems.)

yes ... i also hope there will be improvement soon.

And the best way to achieve better AF or shorter improvement cycles in Pentax-AF is to NOT say its OK, and nearly en par with other makers.
(what is clearly wrong)

Thank you for being so honest, but still staying with the PENTAX system/brand.
I also bear that cross since i fell in love with the K-7 and K-5 design, and i sincerely hope they will come back to the KISS-directive they implemented in those cameras. ... And I just loved the handling of those cameras... they design felt so calm, reasonable and still had that analogue chic factor...
totally without the need for borrowing design-elements from fuji...
When i was photographing in London, people always asked what kind of camera that was and if it´s digital or still analogue because it just had that certain touch to it.
(despite all that K-5IIs was a real killer - when it came to IQ and crystal clear looking pics)

And its not that there would be no innovation at all on the PENTAX ship, actually I like the display design on the K-1 f.i. ... but all the other bells and whistles...
. I would exchange them for a better AF-system at any moment.

seems to be a bit off topic, but since it's alread written, I'll post it anyway.
- I am just so happy every time I find people who share the same PENTAX love and still try to be honest and dont pervert facts. thank you totsmuyco...

let me add:

at this very moment I compared prices:
the XQD already is cheaper than its UHS-II SD-Card counterpart...!!!
Whilst the Lexar XQD card is capable of 390MB/s write speed, --- get it: THE Sandisk UHS-II SD card counterpart can only write 260MB/s

guess what: THE XQD card is INDEED cheaper!!! both offer 64GB...

now you wish for it. :)

I dont know, why people should stop complaining.
I would rather suggest them to put users on the ignore list, that always give you the same "stop complaining"-blabbering.

... wait ... done.

The Tamron 28-300mm F3.5-6.3 XR Di AF does the trick for me.
I know thats far away from 16 or 18mm at the wide end. But most customers wont care, since wideish photos always look a bit distorted.
And those who do care about great wide angle photos will carry a dedicated wide angle zoom DFA 15-30 f.i. (if not a prime actually)...

I have the tammy and I am quite satisfied... thats a nice walkaround lens.

Thing is I would love to see a modern version. Like the "Tamron 28-300 mm F/3.5-6.3 Di VC PZD".
(sry for "complaining" so badly)

And no, I dont really care if it wears the Tamron badge or the PENTAX badge...
they could also print RICOH upon it... who cares, as long as it fits our needs.

I dont know who owns who and i actually dont care. What i know, is that in some recent Tamron survey, one was asked if he would own a PENTAX or at some point later if he would wish for a PENTAX K-Mount lens, which zoom range etc.

And AFAIK, some pentaxforums.com member made a call to all pentaxforum members to join the survey, and vote for some lens, but AFAIR ..
all the people behaved a bit envious or irrational and argued, that this wouldnt make any sense, and they would never do... bla bla. etc.
... As long as such behaviour is the "fundemental tone" here on PF... i think we are far away from becoming a bigger family.

Despite that I am convinced that RICOH-Imaging should work on a better AF and do a bit more advertising, and PENTAX cameras would sell like hotcake.(again)
...what would also end in having much more diversity and quantity in 3rd party lens choice.
