Astrophotography settings K-1 with astrotracer

Your APSC lenses will of course still all be usable on the K1 using it cropped or cropping it in post and maybe retaining a bit greater area of the sensor with certain lenses. You can always start with one wide angle full frame lens like one of the Samyang for example and safe some cost.
For the absolute best results at 90 seconds a tracker would be the best because of the corners with a wide angle lens, but even with astrotracer still highly usable and no hassle to polar align.

During my days in Tenerife I experimented with exposures up to Aboutaleb 3 minutes with astrotracer, but also shots of only 30 seconds with astrotracer on. The advantage of the longer exposures is that you can decrease ISO or decrease your aperture leading to cleaner images and sharper photo's, disadvantage is the blurred background, so you need extra exposures for your foreground. In the end I found shots of about 40 to 50 seconds the most convenient. Shots were pretty clean at 6400 ISO with the K-1 and foreground still usable enough to use just one shot.
Overall I had no problems at all using astrotracer, it worked every time I tried.
I also brought a tracker with me which obviously worked even better, but the convenience of astrotracer is very hard to beat.

Well I am back from Tenerife. I can tell you that the Pentax performed admirably as did the Irix lens. I used many different settings and used it with Astrotracer on and off as well as with the camera on a tracker. I used exposures up to 3 minutes. Used long exposure noise reduction on some shots and on others I didn't. Iso went as high as 6400 but no higher.
Skies were absolutely awesome up there.
I still have to look through all the files to see what worked best, but for now I can share one with you. which was a quick manupilation, so there still is probably a lot wrong with it, but I am really happy with it so far.
Thanks for looking and all of your helpful suggestions!

Peter

Yes, the store was very professional about it. No problems at all. I'll definitely post some results once I get back, should be somewhere around the end of next week.
I will go and test the Irix before I go, but I am afraid I won't have enough time to exchange it if it is no good.

Thanks Rod for all that information, that was really helpful. Today I did buy the Irix 15mm to take with me. Your photos amongst others convinced me to take it. We'll see how it performs. Thanks again,

Peter

Hi all,

Today I went back to the store. It appeared that my lens was indeed a faulty one. I tried another one and it worked without any issues, as did a 14mm version. I ended up buying the Irix 15mm though to bring along on my trip next week.

Again thanks for all your suggestions and ideas

Peter

Hi Rod,

There's some really nice examples there. In some of the corners the limitations of astrotracer are obviously visible, but it doesn't "spoil" the pictures at all.
On the fisheye photos I do not see any trailing stars even the ones at 11mm. Did you crop them or did you do something in post processing to improve those?
Anyway thanks for sharing.

Hi Rod, I noticed some shots with the 15 mm Iris lens. How do you like it in combination with the K1. Shots look really good, but looks like there is some vignetting (maybe intentional)
Looks like your astrotracer shots all work out pretty well!

Hi all,

I am getting ready for a trip to Tenerife next week and will be taking the K1 with me for some Milky Way shooting. I bought the Samyang 20 mm f/1.8 for the purpose and will probably be using the lens at around f/2.8 to dim the aberrations somewhat.
My question is this to all of you who have used the astrotracer function for the Milky Way. What exposure time and ISO combinations seem to give the cleanest results? Did you use any in camera noise reduction or non at all ( don't know what the status of the white dot issue is).
I was thinking that maybe 2 to 3 minutes would be a good starting point at around ISO 800 to 1600.
I would really appreciate your comments and advise, and maybe some good samples, to get me going.

Thanks,

Peter

Hi everyone, and thanks for your ideas and replies. I suspect that the lens might not be communicating then. I'll check the screws on the mount, and yes the lens aperture ring is set to A. If nothing else I'll try the green button trick, thanks for that suggestion. First I'll go back to the store. I'll post on what I find!

K1 and Samyang problem

Hi,

I just bought a Samyang 20mm f/1.8 for some astro work with my new K-1. I looked at the lens' instructions, and it said that it can be used on the Pentax with the aperture ring in auto, however when I attach it, the camera does not seem to recognize it af the F number is not displayed and the "f" remains flashing on the camera's display. Seems I can only use it in fully manual, but then when I put it in Av mode, it only shoots and meters with the lens wide open. In manual it works but then it doesn't meter for me. No problem for the astro stuff but less usefull for other work.
Any suggestions on how to solve this?

Hi everyone,

Just registered. I bought a Pentax K1 that I want to mainly use for astrophotography. My other camera is a Sony A7rii, which is great but not so great for astrophotography for several reasons.
I am just starting to learn the camera which seems quite intuitive. But I have some questions already which is why I am here.

Regards,

Peter
