Precision's sight unseen estimate is not a flat rate quote and never has been. It is also not a minimum and is always subject to being overridden after actual inspection.
Sadly, it sounds like your lens is toast in more than one way and likely that most shops will simply refuse an attempt to repair based on doing so being economically unfeasible.

You have not missed anything, but you may have started something. I started with an ist D and upgraded to the Kx after only a couple years. I enjoyed the Kx so much I bought a second one. It takes some excellent photos and is easy to use. Last year I did upgrade to a K70 but have retained both Kx cameras for back up. the favorite photo I have taken with a Kx is of Devil's Tower in Wyoming which I have blown up to 16X20 and have it framed on my wall. Actually it is the only photo to which I have done that.
There are other Kx users here so this should get some comments. And thank you for starting this thread.

I have my first Pentax dslr, a K-X. I have searched the forum and have not found a dedicated discussion thread or photo thread. Am I missing something?

I've not used this lens, but don't doubt that it is true.
I have an FA35/2 that is WAY BETTER than I expected it to be. That extra stop of light makes a big difference because of how and where I use it. If not, maybe the macro is a better choice, but I am 100% satisfied with mine.
The DA 20-40 ltd zoom is a stellar lens as well. Not as fast, pretty good close focusing capabilities, but not technically a macro, but you do get a bit of FL range there.
By all accounts the 31/1.8 is the best prime lens in this range, but I can't personally vouch and they are expensive.
The Sigma 30/1.4, if you get a good copy seems to be a very compelling lens as well.

True: the 20mp sensor on the K-S2 in my opinion is very sharp. In fact, I find it as sharp as the K-70's 24mp...if you think about it, the 4mp differential is small and the slightly larger pixels provide even more light capture.
If the 35mm f2.4 has the most aberration, what other prime lenses have you used that show slight softness. As you know, some lenses are designed (certain SONNAR designs, for example) to be "softer", though almost any digital exposure in center focus, is sharper than the average film SLR of yesteryear if calibrated equally, IMO.

...or a significant issue with the lens (e.g. decentered, damaged, or unable to create a sharp enough image for AF).

A guy on DPR claims:
"Create on SD card file "00077860.551" with "[OPEN_DEBUG_MENU]" and LF char.
Create on SD card file "DEVELOP.MOD" exact 10 bytes long with binary content:
Hexbytes: 07 1A 02 0A 19 18 1B 1C 05 11
Turn off camera, plugin this SD card. Leave card door open. Hold "menu" button and turn camera on."

But if you require more than -10 or +10, the fault is a misalignment requiring mechanical adjustment, not some electronic shimming. It may even be at an angle.

When you enter the AF finetuning menu you can click on either apply to "all" or apply to "one." You probably want to choose to apply to just one and it will remember the adjustment for each separate lens. I have done this for all my lens and the results match pretty well my other testing methods but this is much easier and faster. Concerning zoom lens, like another poster stated you will probably have to compromise between the focal lengths.
One other thing to watch. I recently just purchased the DA *55 1.4 from B&H and I checked the lens using the Dot Tune method several times and got the same results of -3. Then for the fun of it I checked the lens again at more than double the distance to the target and came up with a +3 results. I sent this lens back for an exchange and the checked the second lens the same way, and the results were within two points of each other so I split the difference and will keep this lens.

Are photographing these get-togethers really necessary? I mean how much really needs to be documented to the point you need a photographer roaming about snapping photos of everyone throughout the night?
I'd feel rather uncomfortable if I was attending a friends dinner and he whipped out a camera and started taking photos of everyone throughout the night.. as if I was on some kind of display. It isn't a birthday, wedding, or other special occasion.. do you really need to photograph these in detail? Can a couple smartphone shots be enough?

What they said ^ ^ ^
The act of photographing is mildly antisocial, particularly if done with a sophisticated camera. My rules at present are:- Carry my phone for snapshots
- Leave the camera at home if where I am going is a group event
- Leave the camera in the closet if I am the host
- Have someone else be responsible for a group photo
- Never mix photography with a date...unless one's date is the intended subject and they are OK with that in advance
