Is photography dead?

So much of what you state is sadly true! In the end, however, you still need to know/feel what makes a professional photograph as opposed to a picture regardless of capture/post editing. My hope is that eventually true art with a camera will win out. Our business is sign design/fabrication. We see tons of "logos" that people make on their own with the "one click wonders" of PS. When we help them really look at their logo and compare it to national chain logos eventually, for the most part, they see their own short comings and that pretty much ends their excursion into logo design. I think that many people will, in the end, see that their "photographs" taken with their phones just don't seam to have that "awe" factor (as Gavin Hardcastle would put it) and will either look into how to achieve it or will simply get disgusted and give up. I'm in the achiever group myself. I continually try to get myself in places where I'm more likely to see a real photograph opportunity and try my best to make my pix look like what I see in my mind - still VERY much to learn, but I'll keep working at it unlike many people I know that after a couple hundred shots either sell the camera or leave it packed away. I'm going to just keep shooting no matter what any trend comes along!

Are Pentaxians "Dfferent"?

I was out of the photography seen all together for a number of years. Previous new camera was a canon EF in the 70's. When I finally had $ to purchase a DSLR I bought strictly for price, KS2 with kit zoom lens. I would simply not do without the adjustable viewing screen and the mirror as I use them both equally. I've had my KS2 for about 4 yrs. and can't believe the features it has! I don't care to list them all here, but because of them my creativity just plain blooms at times because of them. I do get looks occasionally from people when hiking the US, mostly western states - love the desert! When at Calf Creek Falls in Utah a Pentax guy from France with a fully loaded bag tapped me on the shoulder and handed me his Pentax fisheye and motioned to me to put it on my camera and shoot a few. Knowing the cost of that lens I was quite surprised to say the least. We compared a couple pix on our viewing screens, shook hands and parted company. When I started to look into better lenses I found out what a niche brand Pentax is. Gratefully I now have a large selection of lenses from 10mm thru 300mm. I bought 2 old, used, but great condition, lenses which are totally manual - back to the good old days! In short I'm happy to be a "Pentaxian" because of all the additional creative and fun opportunities I now have despite my lack of $, oh yes the weather sealing is fantastic, too!! While I'm not a professional by any means I do enjoy this sport tremendously and with digital I get enough pix from one trip to keep me busy until the next one. Another note: I always liked the sound of David Bowie like que es tu! Wish I could catch a ride with "Major Tom" to get some pix from the window of his "tin can"!

Bought my K S2 simply for the least costly DSLR at the time. What find!!! It does more than many far more expensive cameras - and weather sealed to boot. I had no idea that by this purchase I was becoming a member in a "club" of sorts. Only bad part is finding lenses, but I have that mostly solved.

Thanks for all the replies! Little personal history. Started with a Canon EF, 1.8, 50mm lens and a Vivitar series 1 w/macro. Loved that camera! Semi-auto. Had 2 other digital P&S, both Nikon. The 5,000 took great photos, but waiting for auto focus to work drove me nuts. So I looked for a DSLR I could afford. Got my K52 and really do love it. I was hoping a new camera meant easier, but with all the digital capabilities the possibilities are endless - so much for easy. I do experiment in manual, but get so much better (quick) results in full auto mode. The mass/weight of this little guy gives it a nice feel and should help the hand holding, but it doesn't. Every shot is on a tripod. My biggest problem is that sometimes the light in the forest is a bit lacking. Some of the attached pix will give an idea of what I like shooting. Quite often (I use the screen exclusively for composition) I get what one author called The "blinkies" going on where there are red warning flashes on the screen. I keep the histogram centered or to the right as much as I can. What I don't get is that I try to get a shot and it goes through the whole focus routine but the shutter won't snap. I try again without a change and it works fine. I've taken many really nice pix with the sigma 17-50mm so to say I'm happy with this pair is an understatement! Even though the aperture is fixed at 2.8 the DOF is is amazing. Hope someone can help with this little problem. Thanks in advance!

I have a K52 and use a sigma 17-50 zoom with dedicated 2.8 aperture and have problems with relatively low light landscape shots. Sometimes I can get the shot by increasing the micro volt setting. Increasing ISO doesn't help much. Generally use full auto to save time so I can keep up with my wife while hiking. Any advice?

Got some great pix at Utah last year! Talked to a guy with a large professional canon lens. Asked why he was using his phone camera instead of his canon gear. He showed me how the dust affected his new lens-couldnt focus. Not a problem at all with my k52s!
