Getting the K-1 or not

For your zoom, the 28-105 is regarded as a "kit lens". If all kit lens were of its quality, there would be such no such designation. The lens punches way above its pay grade. I have a Tamon 90mm 2.8 macro that gives superior results; a Pentax 43 Ltd. 1.9 that gives superior results; a Takumar 55 2.2 (vintage ~1957) that gives razor-sharp results. With those comparisons, the 28-105 takes no back-seat. The results are just very nice and the zoom range, for me, is very helpful. In short, I think you would not only not be disappointed, I think you would feel as if you had found a hidden treasure in the 28-105.

Thanks to all. Your collective experience is most helpful and appreciated.. Jjust as I expected, you raised issues I do not have enough video experience to even know to ask, i.e., white balance, etc.

Primer on Video with K-1

I am searching for a primer on shooting video with the K-1. The user's manual is not particularly helpful and I need a really basic tutorial and recommendations on frame rate, shutter speed, tracking, mode options (manual, AV, etc.) and any other important considerations that I am not experienced enough to know to ask.

I've had the K-1 for 4 years and consider it the best handling, most capable for still photography camera I've ever owned, and certainly the most enjoyable to use. That would go back to film days working with Leica, Bronica, various film Pentax, Canon digital compact.

Thank you for any guidance/links you might provide.

K-1 1.4x teleconverter

Thank you for the reference shots and taking time to post them. If I am interpreting them correctly, it look as if the vignetting with the FA* 300mm and 1.4x is relatively minor on the Sony.

K-1 1.4x teleconverter

Thank you all for your responses. The answer is as I expected, but there no substitute for having the experience of actual users.

Pschulte asks what I would be using the teleconverter for: simply to extend the reach of my Tamron 2.8 90mm Macro, Pentax 28-105mm (what a unheralded gem), and the Pentax F 4 300mm if acquired.

Joetitch asks how many mp do I want: 16mp would be fine for most of my shots.

This leads me to two questions. Does anyone know of posted images that illustrate the vignetting effect of shooting with the 1.4xif on the K-1 in full frame; and do I understand correctly that if I shoot the K-1 in crop mode with the 1.4x teleconverter, I should experience no vignetting? Any personal experience with the latter?

Does anyone make a 1.4x teleconverter that will work with the K-1 without vignetting at all? My understanding is that the Pentax unit will work with the K-1, but does cause vignetting.

Thank you.

Thank you! Your courtesy to answer such a question is appreciated.

Another example where I am a bit embarrassed to have asked a question with such an obvious answer.

Operator error. I have never looked past the 2sec icon. Having a 12sec delay is just what I wished for.

To All -

I learned far more than I ever anticipated from a rather focused (couldn't resist) question. I've never been around professional cinematography and I found the details of what all goes into just the simple dimension of focusing fascinating.

Thanks for taking time to expand my knowledge.

Biz-Engineer -

A most interesting explanation. Making movies is not a great interest of mine, but I decided that if the K-1 "Movie" mode was there I would try to learn a bit about it. Regardless of any short-coming in the video department, the K-1 serves me extraordinarily well. From ergonomics that seem as if they were molded for my own hand, to image quality that is outstanding, the K-1 fits my interess and usage patterns perfectly. If I really wanted video capability, there are other options that have emphasized that capability.

Thanks for taking time to give me a more in-depth perspective.

K-1 Movie Focus

I am new at attempting to use the Movie mode on my K-1.

If I am in Movie mode (manual, 30fps, 1/60th), shooting a static subject, using the shutter-button half-way to establish initial focus, is there a way to maintain focus as I either very slowly move the camera closer to the subject, or as I stay in place and zoom the lens?

I have tried holding down the AF button, no luck; holding down the shutter button half-way, that's not it.

Any assistance will be appreciated.

Thank you.

What are the limitations/constrictions when using the DA 55-300mm f/4.5-6.3 with the K-1 or K-11?

I realize it was originally designed for the APS-C sensor, but I think I have seen some on the forum using it with the K-1 or K-11. Any reviews of the quality of results would be appreciated.

Thank you.

K-1 Auto Focus Failure

Thank you to each and everyone.

wade22 and UncleVanya nailed it: I had locked in the focus to use the AF button exclusively. When I now attach a lens, any lens, and press the AF button to focus...perfect.

An embarrassing mistake. I have to reflect that "If one learns by making mistakes, I am headed for Rhodes Scholar status".

Thanks, again, for taking time to address my question.

K-1 Auto Focus Failure

The auto-focus feature has failed to work on my K-1. The camera is three years old, photography is my hobby, but I only shoot about 10-20 shots a week.

I have three lenses, Pentax 28-105mm, Tamron 90mm Macro, Pentax 41mm Ltd.; none will auto-focus (including in full nor limit for the 90mm). I have used the AF many, many times and it has worked perfectly on all lenses. The lenses all focus manually and they all take perfect pictures. I shoot in AV mode 95% of the time.

It happened suddenly and I think I might have very well inadvertently changed some adjustment setting that is universally affecting the AF function. I not aware of making any such change(s), but that doesn't mean I did not.

Thoughts on what may be going-on and how I may correct it will be most appreciated.

Do I understand correctly that since pixel shift mode records 4 images, the resulting file should be approximately 144 mgb in size?
