Thanks for all the advice on why my new camera lens didn't work. The advice to calm down and think logically was the best, but sometimes hardest to do.
Through a local camera store I found an independent camera technician that had a Pentax body to test my old lens on and it worked fine. So it was the camera body. He showed me the two contacts inside the body that many of you mentioned, and explained the screw driven focusing system of the older lenses compared to the motor driven focusing of the newer Pentax lenses. I have been to two different camera repair shops over the months and talked to a third, and none of them mentioned this and probably didn't know. I don't think they had a Pentax body to test it on.
I did try cleaning the contacts and it didn't work, so there must be something going on inside the body. I need the camera, so for now I'm just going to use my older lenses. Later I'll go back to this technician and see if he can fix it.
Thanks for your help.

I have a Samsung NX1100 that fits the bill quite nicely. A Samsung 20mm or 30mm pancake lens would make it even better. For now I have to make do with the 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 and 45mm f/1.8 lenses that I do have. It works very well for traveling. |

This article took a long time to research and write. I might say three decades! I find it's worth diving deep into a contentious topic, if only to gain clarity in my own mind. Hope it's useful for others. That Elusive "3D Pop" Defined is available on my blog. Contains simple explanations of MTF, DOF, and sharpness that will help beginners cut through the technical details. Examples provided from three Pentax lenses.
TL;DR
3D pop is a desirable characteristic of an image where the subject is rendered with a pleasing dimensionality that allows it to be clearly distinguished from its environment. This effect is created by a combination of ideal light, appropriate subject to background distance, and perspective. Furthermore, it requires a lens that is free from optical defects, with high measurements for sharpness and contrast, at least in the part of the frame where the subject is located. Furthermore, a lens that does not perfectly correct field curvature can enhance 3D pop.
Background blur and separation are not the same as 3D pop, though they might enhance the effect. A wide open aperture is not essential and might even be counter-productive. Instead, choose the aperture that most clearly isolates the subject.

Honestly, processing film at home doesn't require that much time...
I don't have a dedicated darkroom, so I have to set up my developing gear in a bathroom for each session, and pack it away afterwards so the bathroom is free for normal use once more. All told, it takes me about an hour to prepare the solutions, load film into the tank, develop it, hang it to dry, then wash and dry the various bits of equipment and pack it away. The following morning, I take another 30 minutes to cut my film into strips, digitise each frame, then store the strips in sheets and files. Converting the negatives in software takes a variable amount of time depending on whether they're colour or B&W, and how much dust I have to deal with (usually, not much, as I'm pretty careful up-front)... it could take anything from a few minutes to an hour or more for an entire roll.
I'm not exactly efficient in my working practices, but even so I'd say it takes me less than three hours on average - spread over two or even three days, if necessary - to develop, digitise and convert one or two rolls of film negatives (it took me longer the first couple of times, admittedly). I'd guess most of us could free up that amount of time in our schedules every couple of weeks, whether-or-not we're retired... especially if we consider it an enjoyable activity and / or an opportunity to learn and gain experience...

Regardless of where they are now, they will expect to receive Yen for every minute they spend on the 70-135, which will be added to the cost preparing it for another production run. We keep coming back to ‘expected profit’.
Each new lens is a new ‘engineering adventure’. They will have to decide which motor is best for each lens, and then how to do it. In the case of the 55-300, they ended up with a slightly smaller {physically} aperture. It takes a lens designer to do that - people who seem to be in low supply now at Pentax.

A bit tired? It’s so old it’s gone bald, its remaining whiskers are white with age, it’s toothless and sits in a corner drooling slightly and mumbling about the horse-drawn Zeppelin.

Look, the majority of people in these threads ask the question, "Why would I need 'x' piece of gear?" They then come to the conclusion that they don't need it, whatever that thing is -- an f1.4 prime, f2.8 zoom, a short telephoto zoom, or a camera that does more than 5 fps frame rate.
I am sure they are right in that assessment, but that isn't a question that Pentax ever has to ask. The question Pentax is interested in is, "If we make 'x' piece of gear, will we sell enough of it to benefit our bottom line?" Depending the cost of R and D, number of sales, and the price of the piece of equipment, the answers delivered will be different, but if and when they make a DA *50-135 Mark II, it will be because they think they can sell enough of it at the right price to make it worthwhile to release.

Well a month is finally done with one of the hardest lenses I have had to use for the challenge. When I started Sandy warned me it would feel like a long month and he was right. The limitations of a narrow focus range and central focus point were a bit challenging. Anyway I still made it through and am happy with some of the shots. Kenworth Close by Gary Wakeling, on Flickr

I like your results with this lens. I think I'm going to pick it out for April's SIC.
Have fun on a holiday :)

I for one see answer #4 or #3.b: The R&D team is so small (or its budget is so small) that they can't possibly create anything from scratch. It would be outdated before it could be launched. So they tinker around with refreshed products.

I am going to put a roll of Kodak ProImage 100 color negative film in my K2 and then put a Pentax-M 20mm f4.0 on the front of it and participate again this month.

Yep! To put an end to the flip-screen controversy, they will launch the Pentax K-3 Mark III-D, a variant without a rear screen à la Leica M-D. :)

My mistake. I don't know how I missed that. I'm going with I thought it was one of the limited release ones.:)
