Create two new savings accounts, one for you and one for your wife. Set them up to automatically put in a small amount of money each month. You can each buy whatever personal item that you want using the money in that account. Works great - no arguments, fair for both of you.

I'd be happy to design a hood and 3D print it, but I have neither the lens nor the hood. If someone wants to send me a broken but complete hood I can make a new one.

The DA 14 2.8 has noticeable coma. I suspect the best Pentax lens will be the DA 11-18 since it is set up to use a defogging heater for astrophotography. If they did that then they must have tried to optimize the coma.

Take a look at the lens reviews on this forum. They list it there. They are very rare in the M42 mount and are highly rated by the users. I've been wanting to buy one but haven't found one yet.

It has potential, but doesn't quite work for me. The colors on the statue and the sky are great. The perspective straight behind works well with the statue's posture/positioning. As mentioned earlier, the wall/sidewalk at the bottom is too bright and distracting. It could either be toned down in post processing, or cropped out. I also would have shot with the aperture opened up. I find the background distracting so blurring it out would have helped.

I've found the best way to get used to a new focal length is just leave the lens on the camera and go out and shoot with it. Don't bring any other lenses with you. Then shoot lots and be bold. Experiment with new perspectives. Eventually your brain will learn how to think like a 15mm and you'll see where the good shots are.

You lucked out with that one! Yes, the 55mm f2.2 is the correct lens. Both the lens and the camera are quite rare. I have the same setup, but the seller never sent me the case.

Nice colors, peaceful feeling. I would try cropping the right side so the edge is partway into the tree trunk. I find the gap a little distracting - but it may be better as-is. Nice work!

I'm guessing prices for new stock would initially go down as retailers try to get rid of remaining stock. Then prices would start to climb again.

I'm not an expert on this, but I don't think you have much choice for tilt/shift lenses in K mount. There's a Rokinon 24mm and not much else.

I saw this Osprey dive into the local pond out of the corner of my eye. There was no chance to get a photo. I walked around the pond, out onto the street, and my dog decided to sit down and refused to budge. He's big, so it's usually better to persuade him to move along rather than try to drag him. While waiting for him to make up his mind I glanced upward and found out that my dog was actually helping me out. He stopped right beside a telephone pole that had the osprey sitting on top. I shot a few photos, then when I looked at them later I noticed that the osprey still had its catch from the pond in its claw. The A* 300 is perfect for this sort of shot. It's hard to tell on these photos posted on the forum, but the photo is very sharp. |

A view of Oia in Santorini, Greece. The light can play tricks - sometimes 3D objects look like 2D paintings. I was only in Oia itself for one day. It would be nice to spend several days there to find unique photos at different times. Lots of opportunity there! |

On my K-70 I do live view with focus peaking. It's always accurate. The viewfinder focus confirmation isn't great with narrow dof. If I don't have time for live view I just fire off a bunch of shots at a variety of focal positions. One or two of them will always be focused where I want it.

I'm not a lens designer, but as an engineer we deal with tolerances in parts and assemblies all the time. The lens will be constructed with multiple individual lenses. Each of those lenses will have a longitudinal position variance, a concentric position variance, and an angular position variance. Each individual lens will also have variations in its curvature and thickness and alignment between the front and rear faces. There will likely be variations in the index of refraction of the glass. Then there's the variations in the aperture blades, their location, how much they open at each f stop, how concentric they are, etc. Put all of these variations together and you get a lot of potential for each lens performing differently.

I don't think reissuing old lenses is the way forward. It might appeal to long time Pentax users, but they will be a dwindling group. New customers are needed, and they will be looking for modern glass with quick and quiet autofocus.

Having recently purchased an A* 300mm f4, I decided to compare it to my DAL 55-300mm. I know, it's not really a fair fight, but I think it's interesting to see the difference that you get if you invest in a good prime. If you take a look at the zoom's charts on opticallimits.com you'll see that its resolution deteriorates at the longer focal lengths. So, here are two photos taken at 300mm and f5.8 for the zoom, f5.6 for the prime. 100% crops of each follow. When I first did this I thought perhaps I missed the focus on the zoom so I tried it again, focusing carefully using live view. The result was the same. The photos were shot in raw and transferred straight to jpeg with no changes.
It's interesting that the length of the two lenses is fairly similar, but there's a huge difference in weight! And of course the zoom is much longer when it's set to 300mm.
Now I need to spend some time wandering around with the A* and figuring out how to best use the lens. I keep on seeing interesting photos, only to discover that 300mm framing on a cropped camera results in a very narrow view. Time to re-calibrate my brain!

I travel with the 14, 16-85, and a 135. I find the 14's extra width, flare resistance, and sun stars make it a valuable lens to take a long. It spends a lot of time on the camera, so the size in the bag is less of a concern.
