Hello Simon C, I have just taken my GX-10 out accompanied by the 35mm F2.4. The images I took showed me that when the object is close by you get a good sharp result. If you aim at a something farther away and with a smaller aperture that the images and you crop a bit then you see some softness. If I put the Samsung 18-55 on it, then I get quite good pictures even farther away. The same goes for attaching the 18-135 to it. But if I attach the 35mm F2.4 to a more modern Pentax model (from K-01 onwards) I get better results than on the GX-10. The Pentax 's AF are not fine tuned, not necessary.

To me the first three do look soft, I've had better from a zoom lens. Have you put a filter on the lens?

I do not think that you do anything wrong, but the Samsung GX-10 is a bit choosy on the lens-you-use side. I own this camera and not every lens I attach to it results in a good combination. Tomorrow I shall take this combination out and make a few pictures. As far as I can see there is nothing absolutely wrong with the pictures. Perhaps you must pay more attention to the focus points in the OVF. Maybe you aim for something and the camera takes another point to focus on. I have this lens constantly on my K-01 and the results are amazing. But with the K-01 you always shoot in LV and then AF usually gives sharper pictures.

Example of why I asked how you are focusing. It looks to me in this shot that the beach, or more so the rocks on the beach, are the sharpest part of the picture and most likely where you focused. Farther back in the image everything is slightly out of focus. If you want it sharp all the way back there are things you can do. Focus at infinity to get the buildings, use F11 or F16, choose a spot deeper in to to split the difference on the focus... anyway the images certainly aren't bad but there could be AF inconsistency with this lens or just better apertures or focus points to get a little more out of it. |

As per above, the da35 on my k5 wouldn't always nail focus, it was one of the reasons it eventually went. I used to refocus several times and take a few shots.

How are you focusing for these shots? To my eye it seems that focus is closer up in the scene and distant objects seem out of focus. I have 2 copies of the DA35 and they are both very sharp. However, every lens I own needs some degree of focus fine tuning and I found the DA35 to be sometimes inconsistent nailing auto focus. Actually to be frank I found it terribly inconsistent on my K5. K3 and K1 remarkably better but still it sometimes just blatantly and obviously fails. In the end I most often used it on my K1 on a tripod using live view for manual focus landscape shots where it is bitingly sharp. I decided I really like 35mm on APSC and FF so I bought the HDFA 35mm f2 when it came out, and I love it. It is so close to what the DA35 is but better build and it's screw drive AF is more precise, consistent and decisive.

(Laughs) You might regret selling it, because you wouldn't have got much money for it, and you'll discover that there will be times when you simply cannot be bothered lugging the huge (but good) Sigma around.
It's why I kept my FA31 Limited when I bought my Siggy, it does nearly the same job in nearly the same situations, and is almost pocketable. :)

I owned this lens for a year and wasn't bad at all honestly. I made some pretty good and sharp portraits with it. However sold now and upgraded to FF + Sigma 35mm 1.4 art and never looking back :)

Especially at 10mb. Unlike film, a raw digital image is never very sharp.
The first photo had some rudimentary processing done. The second did not. The lens seems to render well.

You can not fine focus this camera. But I agree, the filter could be the culprit. If you want to use a filter, do not use a cheap one, you need a quality one. I shoot without a filter. ---------- Post added 5th May 2021 at 21:59 ----------
Manual focus makes it even more difficult and you should get good results with this lens using AF.

A lot of UV filters (most?) don't have good coatings so they'll perform especially poor in bright sunlight.

I had a UV on mine, not a bad one either but it used to flare and soften on the 35 quite badly. A lens hood helped but in the end I removed it altogether. Not sure if some lenses behave worse than others in this regard.

You should be processing these raw files before posting them. A raw image has no sharpening applied. You should convert them in a suitable raw converter applying input and output sharpening. Then we will be better able to judge an image for sharpness.

I am not familiar with the GX-10 (or the K10D) but it looks like it doesn't have live view or af fine tuning so in that case your best bets are to be careful where you to chose to focus and don't be afraid to use a smaller aperture. I wouldn't try to manually focus that lens without live view, the viewfinder just isn't good enough to do better than the af system will. I used to shoot with a K100D that also didn't have live view or fine tuning so it's not like those features are necessary to get great shots, just be aware of limitations and make the camera do what you want it to. As I mentioned before I did not have a good af experience with my DA35 as it would happily give focus confirmation but be way off, and then the next shot totally different. The work around is to pay close attention in the viewfinder to how well it appears to have focused before pressing the shutter the rest of the way. If it appears suspect, refocus. Sometimes I would have to make it focus elsewhere and then come back to my desired point and try again to get it to work.

From the quick look that I took at the images it almost looks like it is front focusing and you don't have a deep enough depth of field. I would see about setting the camera to only use the center focus point and use that to focus and then reframe. If you are still getting missed focuses then do the AF fine focus adjustment for that lens. My DA 35/2.4 is the lens that I own that is the most off and would back focus until I did a +9 for the AF fine adjustment. I don't know if you were shooting wide open or near wide open (don't have a program on the computer I am on that can pull that info out of the DNG) but I've never liked that lens wide open but it starts getting pretty good at f/4 and I think it peaks around 5.6 and stays there for a while until diffraction starts eating detail. So stop it down, especially in bright scenes as you could still get a fast shutter even at f/8 with that scene (about 1/400s).

That would be the first culprit to look at, try removing it and repeating the test on a few subjects. I only ever use ND filters or a CPL, something that will positively enhance my image (I hope anyway).

When I owned that lens it seemed very sharp - but I was never in love with it. That’s on me not the lens I think.

Image 1 looks to have the focus on the house on the left forward of the main village on the right, the other two look OK. I used to have that lens and I would say those landscapes look about right for it.

They look fine to me. 100% crop from 1126 below.
The files are a little bit noisy compared to new gear but the lens is resolving the sensor alright
*hmm seems the image got a bit compressen on upload looks a bit better in the raw development software

Hi Simon. The 1st is probably the softest. The other 2 don't look bad to me. Do you have any with closer subjects? It is difficult to tell whether it has to do with the lens or magnification.
