I had my Pentax MX serviced by Robin @ Harrow Technical (harrowtechnical.co.uk). I was about to post that he had retired but it appears that he is doing a mail order repair service. He did a fantastic job on mine and is a pleasure to deal with.

Asahi Photo are the other Pentax specialists who get recommended a lot.

Can someone diagnose these light leaks in my Pentax ME?

Another thumbs up for Jon Goodman's kits. I fitted one to an ME last year and the instructions were simple to follow and I received the kit within 5 days of ordering and I'm in the UK. I've ordered another kit for an ME a fortnight ago and that to came very quickly.

Pentax K Case

Thank you Baard-Elinar. That's very useful, particularly knowing about the cutout, as it might lead me to a case which are listed without detailing which cameras they're for.

Hi

I need to get a case for my Pentax K. Can anyone send me a picture of their K's case do I know what to look for when keeping an eye out on eBay etc.

Also was their a specific case for the K or is there one that fitted the AP, K, S and other models?

Many thanks

Harrow Technical will cease trading 29/3- Robin Gowing Retiring

Hi All

I just wanted to put a message out that Harrow Technical will cease trading on the 29th March as Robin Gowing is retiring. I've only used Robin recently but I'm sure there are some out there who've had longer relationships with Harrow.

It's a shame to to lose a Pentax specialist, particularly now I appear to have stock piled a number of Pentax film cameras after only venturing into film 8 months ago!.

Matt - whilst the seals are in good condition it still might be worth replacing them if they're sticky as using the camera might cause them to deteriorate and it can make a real mess inside the camera.

Good suggestions above re. buying a 'parts' mx for the focusing screen but just to let you know the screens do occasionally come up for sale on eBay UK.

Good to know about the differences in the early and late model MXs. Mine's the later model and I paid £86+£9 postage from memory. The only parts that would have been supplied would have been the light seals / mirror bumper which were included in the price.

You might find that the mirror is intermittently stuck up on the MX because the mirror bumper is old an sticky. In which case I would avoid test firing the camera as it might cause the sticky mirror bumper to disintegrate and leave debris on the focus screen (I speak from experience with my ME!).

I've had an MX recently serviced by Harrow Technical having seen a number of good reviews about them. I'd purchased an MX with a couple of lenses for £25 form a charity shop and wanted it to have a once over as it definitely needed new seals. I'm really pleased with the service I got from Robin and the camera is working really well (apparently a lot of the shutter speeds were out) and the turnaround time was exactly as quoted. It's my first film camera and therefore first service so I don't have anything to benchmark against though.

Fungus and fitting Pentax M and Pentax-A lenses on Pentax MZ S body?

Yep...I need to hang out in charity shops in wealthy pockets of London. Funny thing is he knows nothing about cameras so it was a fluke. My MX came from a charity shop for £25 with two lenses and a flash so I can't complain.

So, I had a look at his prints yesterday and it looks like it was all problems came at the development stage. Dust all over the negatives, water stains and all sorts of marks. They were printed at Snappy Snaps...say no more! The camera is in mint condition and so is the lens is to (bar the fungus, which is very fine) but this is the kit zoom and needs to be replaced by a nice prime anyway.

Fungus and fitting Pentax M and Pentax-A lenses on Pentax MZ S body?

Hi Steve

Thanks for the reply. Yes, I've asked him to describe what was wrong with the print one more and if he hasn't binned them a copy to look at. If I get hold of one I'll scan and send over. I'll check the rest of the film path to, and light seals again while I'm at it.

Thank you for the advice on the lens mounting to.

All the best

Fungus and fitting Pentax M and Pentax-A lenses on Pentax MZ S body?

Hi

A friend has just picked up an MZ-S from a charity shop for £5. He's had his first roll of film processed (he's never shot film before) which came back showing what he described as scratch marks. I said I would take a look at the camera and noticed what appears to be fungus the lens front element, otherwise the lens and the rest of the camera looked in mint condition. Is it likely that fungus would show up on prints?

I was going to run another film through the camera for him using one of my lenses. I currently have a Pentax M lenses and a Pentax A series lens arriving next week. From what I've read they both fit the mount, of course with only manual focus capabilities. However, will the A series lens also allow for automated aperture control or is the mount not compatible.

Many thanks

Pentax MX film advance, not on spool?

Thank you pschlute & xmas.

The good news is that the film was fine and I got the full 36 exposures. I've also loaded a new film and taken a few frames and I'm confident that to is loaded correctly.

Thanks Peter.

Are you saying then that it may well have been loaded and advancing OK and that it may have just been the lack of tension that was stopping the rewind lever from turning?. From memory I had to turn the lever 3-4 full revolutions before there was any tension.

Fingers crossed I'll no longer be able to advance the film when the counter hits 36!

Pentax MX film advance, not on spool?

Hi

I'm new to film photography and have started using a Pentax MX, which has been fully serviced.

The first film I ran through the camera came out blank. I'm 99% sure that I was being too gentle with it and hadn't loaded the film onto the spool properly and it hadn't wound on.

Someone more familiar with film cameras loaded the 2nd film for me and they were confident it was on the spool properly. However, I know they didn't use the rewind knob to take up the slack in the film. I'm now half way through the film and noticed that the rewind knob was only turning a couple of mm when I advanced the film. I hadn't even though to check this as I shot the first 15 shots!

I suspect again that the film may not have been loaded properly and I have now tensioned the film with the rewind knob and this now turns completely when I advance the film. My questions are;

- Am I right in assuming it's very unlikely the film wasn't loaded properly as the rewind knob was only moving a couple of mm when I advanced the film?
- Having tensioned the film I think I'm now properly on the spool and the film is advancing. The counter is now already showing 15 shots taken. However, assuming I still now have 34+ exposures to shoot, can I continue to shoot even when the counter hits 36...i.e. until the film is actually used up? or will this damage the exposure counter mechanism?
- The MX has lots of white ribs to load the leader into. I just want to check, should I be loading the leader into the left side or right side of the spool? Are there any other MX film loading techniques I should be aware of?

Sorry for the long post and thanks in advance for your help.

Russell
