Looks like the Pentax K1 II successor will a half frame film camera with zone focus. ---------- Post added 23-04-24 at 08:24 ----------
K1II is adequate for more things. No further expenses needed until it breaks, no other purchase can beat that in terms of the cost per additional image taken (cost = 0$, or only the cost to recharge the D-LI90 batteries).

Disclaimer: I have had NO professional training!!
I was able to put together a few pictures I got of the eclipse into a video editor.
I'm a rookie at using this Pentax K-50, especially on an eclipse-first time. And I'm a rookie at video editing!!
Take with a grain of salt, here's my finished "rough" draft of my handy work, Enjoy: Youtu.be |

This is what totality looked like in Granbury, Texas.
I waited until it was completely dark and I could see no shadows. Then I used live view to take a quick shot. Slightly cropped. K1II5908 Totality.jpg by Stanley Kolkmeier, on Flickr
Edit: after looking at it, I realize I made lot's of mistakes, both in the camera settings and in PP. I'll do better next time.

Wow. Great black and white capture of the dam and its high water flow. Shot from a good perspective.

A week or so ago I wrote about acquiring a Rollator-style walker to cope with some balance problems I have. It is an all-terrain model with pneumatic tires. At the time all I had was a product photo from the seller's website.
This post is to show some photos of the Rollator in use. The other day I took it out for a full-blown test. I loaded it up with more gear than I would ever take at one time and then headed out for a two mile wander around a small lake at the local state park. The path varies between gravel and dirt and some grass, and it while it was flat, it was not smooth. The Rollator passed with flying colors.
The gear I packed for this included my photo bag packed with a K-3// camera body and 4 lenses and a Sirui travel tripod; a full-sized Benro tripod; and a Sigma 150-500 along with a gimbal mount. In other words, a bunch of stuff. Here are some photos that show the Rollator both packed and in action.
I am thrilled with this whole set-up. It will give me more opportunities than I have had in a while. If anyone reading this has some mobility issues, this might be something to explore.
This photo shows the camera bag on the front of the walker. I used 2 snap hooks to hang it. The snap hooks are attached to the walker with zip-ties and stay on all the time.
Here is the full-sized tripod mounted on the other side of the Rollator. I used 2 gear-ties (giant tie-wraps) for this and they worked perfectly.
Here I am sitting on the walker's seat and using the camera. This worked great; better than I expected.
The tripod set up with Sigma ready to shoot some wading birds and water fowl. Notice the tripod is set low so I can sit while taking while taking pictures.

So much good information here, so much to digest, I haven’t picked up a new tripod in years and never owned a mono pod. So yeah I love hearing everyone’s opinions and really love seeing the images of your setups. As I age I’m starting to think more and more about these options, and the tech has come so far in the last couple decades. YouTube is good for basic info, but you don’t know who’s being paid what to promote what, but I find it more important to see what fellow photographers are actually using.

As a monopopd, I use Benro MC-98EX, with Wimberley "monogimbal" head MH-100. Two square arca pads are attached to the lens foot, aligned. As a tripod I use an old wooden surveillance tripod with a Bogen 3047 head. With this config, I am using the hexagonal Bogen/Manfrotto pad.
I mostly shoot land- and cityscapes with this lens. Monopod config is good, but tripod is more stable (obviously), and allows me to wait for the perfect moment for hours, lens pointed at the place I am going to take pictures of. So monopod is for hiking, tripod for a more dedicated session.
Handling the lens with my bare hands works, but I found the resulting pictures less sharp (no surprise) so I avoid it.

I'll put that on my calendar.
As for me, I'm visiting Montreal with my family during the eclipse. I'm not buying new gear, but I'll be practicing with some ot the gear I own to determine the best gear to take. Hopefully, the weather will cooperate. Even if it doesn't, we'll still be in a great city to explore.

Not tried this filter / holder combination, but my perennial suggestion : Gaffer tape round perimeter of the holder, extending to the lens (if this is possible - i.e. won't interfere with focus / zoom rings). Considerably cheaper than the new holder, which may eventually be necessary, of course. Just an idea.

I'll agree w/ lighting and subject isolation from background with shallow DOF. Here's with the DA 18-135 at 135mm, f8 on a K-30. It's strikingly 3D on my monitor. IMGP1022 by Mark Hoffman, on Flickr

You should consider Godox flashes, especially the TT350. They are relatively compact and the head tilts and swivels.

I forgot to mention, one issue with the Benro geared head (and this may well hold true for other geared heads as well) is that if you want to do Astro, you have to mount your camera "backwards". The vertical tilt angle (forgive me if I'm using the wrong terminology) is limited to about 30 degrees up in the normal orientation but if mounted backwards, you can point it straight up 90 degrees. So using the gear wheels can be a little confusing in reverse (in the dark), but I suppose you get used to it.
