SMC K 500/4.5 at Shopgoodwill with case and caps

It's in absolutely fantastic shape. I can see no dust inside at all.
One minor scuff on the retractable hood. I'm extremely pleased.
Case is in good shape , but the insert cutout in the top is missing whatever goes in it ?
The filter may already be inserted , and I have no instructions on how to rotate it 90 degrees?
I definitely need a gimball head which I no longer have.
Overall pleased.

I've been to the Grand canyon many times. Only live 4 hours away.
If I had to choose only one lens it would be the DA16-85 hands down my most used.
I've done the GC with only a DA 20-40 limited and my last trip with the DA 55-300 PLM.
Lots of different shooting styles and opportunity.

North Rim is CLOSED from Oct 15th until May 15th.

Plan on NOT driving. Just use the excellent FREE shuttle bus services. Saves lots of time and hassle.
They come around every 20 minutes or so. Park at the Village area.

Even if I could find a simple parts diagram of current or recent lenses , that would be an immense help locating a used donor lens for a spring....but Nooo.

I have donor lenses. Just not one that's quite right.
There is quite a bit of variance between various lenses on the springs.
Not fun to open several lenses only to discover it's not the right one.

BTW....that's Rosie the Riveter..... She lives here in Sun City !

Every fourth of July she was at an event right across the road from me at the Rec center called Ring the Bell..... Don't know if she will still be there this year. Covid shut it down 2 years in a row. She is well known here.

I was quite kind. Even left good feedback just to be done with it. I just fixed the damn thing and moved on. I wanted another K-S2 for kayak adventures and now it's done.

---------- Post added 06-29-22 at 07:40 ----------

Its a good camera with nice image quality.
Of course I know any K-S2 is a complete crapshoot with ABF. It's not the first time I rolled the dice and lost.

---------- Post added 06-29-22 at 07:42 ----------

Yuuuup ! Rolled the dice and lost again....lol.
It's all fixed now. Willie is Happy Again!

I have a really hard time sacrificing yet another *IstD or *IstDL for its organs.
Luckily they each have 2 solenoids so I'm sparing a extra lesser body it's life !
The recipient is a K-S2 that was made in 2017 serial # 733xxxx.
You may read about the later K-S2's being made were somewhat less likely to develop ABF as Pentax possibly did some change to the solenoid ?
Rest assured....They aren't as evidenced by this one that is acting up since friday.
Started only in Live View and now is doing it more often using the view finder.
Luckily this will be my 4th repair of a solenoid on various defective models , so all should go ok.
My incoming donor ..... oh my.....is nice.... Very nice !
I almost feel guilty. Hope I can do this and sacrifice it quickly.

The Victim...hmmm... I mean "Donor" is incoming from Ebay on Monday!

Dear God please forgive me for the body life i'm about to end. I promise to breathe new life into another 2 bodies in greater need.....Amen.

Pentax Aperture Block, Black Picture Problem Class Action Lawsuit

well...as far as the weather sealing , I would say it's questionable at best.
My first K30 ended up in a campground dumpster over ABF. We didn't know anything back then:o
Then my first K-S2 bit the dust and it sat for 3 years before we knew enough to fix it.
The most recent K-S2 was very late in the serial numbers and was supposed to be an upgraded solenoid. Now it's giving me dark images in Live view.
Quite aggravated as I really like my cameras. It's been an unbelievable ammount of frustrating stress dealing with this over several years. The only good thing is I now know how to deal with it. However it never should have been that way in the first place.
Should Pentax ever face any large settlements I'm sure not going to feel bad for them. Probably just smile !:D
As far as a Win/Loose situation ? There's no winners on either side.

From what I can deduct that would add another 40% to sales from us Pentaxians that are still waiting for our real "Flagship" model to finally arrive !

I picked up a HD DA 10-17 for $199 from Amazon. However when I received it was missing the removable hood. Amazon customer service gave me a credit for $99 !
Lens looked new/unused in original box with warranty card intact.
I'm still quite happy to say the least.

I now have repaired one K30 , and just today my third K-S2.
Two were mine and two belonged to other people.
Photogem deserves all the THANKS on making all of this possible.
Brings new hope to people with one of these camera models that developed ABF and got a bum deal from Pentax.

Well.... my donor body arrived today and I promptly got right to the surgery.
All went very well as this was my fourth green solenoid swap. Right at the end I was pulling my hair out for about a half an hour trying to figure out why all of my exposures were coming out severely Overexposed Almost White. Just when I was about ready to give up I discovered that my exposure compensation somehow got locked in the process.
The *ist DL however didn't fare so well. I couldn't for the life of me find a diagram online on how to remove the solenoid from the flash properly without destroying everything. Unfortunately in the process I broke the damn thing and then got frustrated and just got right down to business and pulled both solenoids out. She did get even with me though and I got one nasty shock that I don't ever want to experience again !!!
On a side note I did find a small metal shaving stuck on the magnet of the solenoid. I have no idea what it came from but I don't think that it affected the performance but I'm not sure.
I also had a question about the magnet in the solenoid and whether or not it was position sensitive in other words does it have a positive and negative end?
Overall my agenda was nicely completed without any real issues. I do kind of feel bad though about the *ist DL but that's just the way things go and I really didn't need to be playing with yet another camera.
I need to take some pics of this solenoid for Photogem to take a look at , and I also have a spare white one out of all of this.;):D:lol:

On an interesting note....I swear my screw holding the solenoid was on the left ???
Too late to go back and double check now. I hope I got it in the right place.

Just was thinking.....
Maybe I could harvest the white solenoid from the flash of the *ist DL rather than the inner one and then replace it with the green one from the KS2 ?
That way the KS2 lives ! ...... And the *ist DL is minorly handicapped rather than murdered outright ? Worse case scenario is the flash won't pop up ! Best case scenario is it might even work properly.......:o
Much like sharing an extra kidney where both Live !

Amazon typically rates it's items lower than they actually are.
Amazon's sellers also do the same for a happy buying experience.
Just this week I ordered two used lenses that were rated very good.
When I got them they looked Mint or actually unused.....perfect.
Not happy with it ? Amazon has easy returns for Free.

Right now Amazon Renewed has a Rokinon (Samyang) 14mm 2.8 for $90 !!! Thats a Steal !

I wouldn't say I'm laughing quite yet. I envy people that have never had ABF on the usual suspect bodies. I'm now 3 for 3.
I'm not short on camera bodies by any means , but I use my K-S2's daily and dearly love them.
My beater K-S2 has already been given the appropriate transplant about a year ago and never missed a beat since. 50K clicks now.
This K-S2 was one of the very last ones made. Supposedly largely immune from ABF....Yet here it is again at 3K clicks.
I'm very stressed and aggravated , but what else can I do ? May as well have some fun with the situation...:D

---------- Post added 04-20-22 at 15:45 ----------

I assumed by my cameras manufacture date and later serial number that it has the second modification ?
But since it is failing something is still wrong.
I have done a few solenoid repairs and wouldn't think of putting anything in except for the white original.
Will keep you posted on the transplant , and identifying which version it currently has.
