Worth picking up a 645D as a second body to a Nikon D800?

Let me suggest a slightly contrarian point of view.

Take a look at them by viewing them as tools. While both are excellent tools, they are not necessarily useful for the same tasks.

In a pinch, or when lazy, I've driven nails with an adjustable wrench. Probably a hammer would have been better.

I have a pro body Nikon and also a 645Z, both of which I rather enjoy. I also have two 40 year old Hasselblad with a digital back. They all fit different niches.

While I have other cameras, both smaller and larger, I never carry more than one with me unless it's a paying job. Shooting for pay requires a different approach and I usually carry at least two of pretty much everything.

For travel, we're fortunate in being able to go out of the country on a fairly regular basis. We take carry on luggage only, use public transportation, and walk an average of around 10 miles a day. Carrying more than one camera under such circumstances is a non starter, particularly for someone who hasn't had a travel camera go down on them since starting photography in the mid 1960's.

While I readily admit that that there's probably some poor sod who, at this very minute, has dropped his camera in the Seine, but chances are it ain't gonna be you :) . I wouldn't advocate selling stuff, just don't try to carry everything at the same time. Take as little stuff as possible, you will enjoy the trip more, and your back, feet, and wife will thank you.

Pentax 645 magnifier - will it work on the 645D and 645Z?

While I'm pretty sure it will physically fit, and it might be useful for something on a D, I don't immediately see how it would be more useful on a Z than Live View..

That being the case, I think you'll be very well served by the 645z. :)

"downgrade" from 28-45 to 33-55?

I'm going to suggest that you may be disappointed. Particularly since you are considering replacing one of their very best lenses with it. There is simply nothing about the 33 - 55 that can compare with your current lens.

I have owned only one sample and used it on a 645Z. Stopped down to f8 I was satisfied with the image quality. However, I only used it in bright sunlight at base ISO, on a tripod, photographing stuff that doesn't move very much.

While I did appreciate the light weight, and the zoom range was about right for my purposes, I never really warmed up to this lens. I suspect that the build quality might have had something to do with my feelings. The images produced were certainly satisfactory and I'm not convinced that the low ratings for this lens are completely justified. However, the thing felt so cheaply made it just didn't do much for me.

My personal opinion is that weight reduction and zoom range would have to be truly overriding concerns to make this the best solution. YMMV.

If you're ok with those characteristics I strongly suggest purchasing from one of the Japanese vendors on eBay rather than new. In my view, buying one of these things from B & H and paying full retail would be way too much.

In the interests of full disclosure, my favorite lens for the 645z is the 45 - 85 zoom, closely followed by the 55.

If we're talking "a little over" the NEW price of the lenses that would be around $4600, including a used 75 shutter. Good used bodies from Japan might be around $4000 - $4500, so that's around $8600.

Used lenses might be closer to $1500 plus a body, so around $5500 - $6000.

Much lower that that and I'd tend to look long and hard.

I use this same backpack, although I don't actually walk around wearing it with all my gear in it. I'd probably have a heart attack. It is, however, excellent for moving between the house and car or between car and hotel room :)

I use a 645z and have never tried a 645D or a K-1. I also don't do much night photography, so I can't say anything regarding your specific questions.

I would, however, like to say that my experience using the 645z hand held in the field has been entirely positive. I use it like I use my other DSLR's and have no complaint other than the added weight/bulk.

I have not tried it yet, but as there are so many complaints regarding the recent Lightroom Classic/Lightroom CC deal I tend to suspect that it's an Adobe issue.

On a related note, I discovered today that the PS-HB 67 works fine on both the 55mm and 45mm AF versions with or without a filter. Just not so hot with a polarizer.

That sounds like something I might like to do, but I can't get it in my mind how you are getting from a snap on hood to a step up ring. How's that work ? Would I be able to trouble you for a photo ?

645z color rendering I need help

Since the eyedropper clearly shows neutral, one might assume all is well up to that point.

However, on my calibrated monitor, the #2 file with the Color Checker Profile is much too red for my taste. Since it's not a raw file, but exported from LR with some sort of processing, I question whether it's really the best point to evaluate the issue.

Lacking any other ideas, I think I'd shoot the model with the Color Checker next to her face and no custom profile and see what happen to the skin tones.

What does that leave to check ? Monitor profile ?

How do known good images display on the monitor ?

Usually, when I get some "poltergeist in the software" deal that I can't figure out, I just burn the whole thing down, set everything back to defaults, and start from zero. More times than not it fixes my problem, which is generally pilot error, but then I never know exactly how I fixed it :)

I can't seem to make hide nor hair of Pentax square lens hoods. It appears that some of the older square hoods may fit some of the 645 lenses, but I can't determine what. Does anyone use one of the square hoods on one of their 645 lenses, and if so which hood ? Thanx.

A different question about service

I'm curious if I'll even get an answer to this question.

Can anyone relate the details of what they would consider a "good" service experience they personally experienced with sending a 645d or 645z to Precision ?

I took the old standard screen from my original pentax 645 film camera(first version), snapped off the tab to the side as they have a different position to the later pentax 645's. Using a nail file I smoothed out the remaining squared off sections at the base of the tab.

This is an outstanding piece of information. :) I'm going to try out your solution myself.

Would you happen to know the actual Pentax designation of the screen you modified ?

Personally, I would likely have made the same decision. :)

And if you're feeling in the mood to sell a kidney, there is an AB-82 on eBay for the absurd price of $250 :( Haven seen one of the AA-82 micro prism versions, but I'm still looking :)

Under normal circumstances, and with other brands, I would view this as the normal approach to the end of the marketing cycle before the new model came out.

In the case of the 645z, which essentially had no marketing, at least in the US, I'm not so sure. Pentax seems to have so little interest in the 645z I'm left wondering how much motivation exists to produce a successor. Particularly with the slow pace of new lens development.

Of course, you could argue that the 645D wasn't pushed all that hard either, and we did get a 645z.

Regardless, I think I would prefer to see an increased/improved support presence and some new modern lenses more than a new body.
