I made a look at Zenith, the viewfinder is much better than remembered, rather good in fact. You refer to a test.:dont you think that the "best" screen does not exist ; it depend on the users eye etc.

The AF on the K30 work much better than on my KP copies. With the K30 I had nearly always sharp eyes in frontal portraiture. One of the problems with KP is that focus is good on maximum opening but gets worse when stopping down, especially on Sigma 70 2,8 macro. Furthermore the best AF fine tune value is not constant
I have a rather good hit rate with manual focus on SLR, thats not the case with DSLR and optical viewfinder.
My best focus control is with 4X5 sheet camera, but that equipment is not for my common use
black and white greetings

It has been a pleasure to read this thread, a thread that is polite and friendly as far as I can see. I have hesitated with this answer to be sure that I believe in my own statements.
I have been photographing since mid fifties. Mostly BW in my own darkroom. In 2012 i got a k30 that in 2017 got ABF, new white solenoid,,a little improvement but still not reliable. After that a KP that was replaced on warranty after a few months, battery drainage and hopeless AF. The AF is still not good, I have described my troubles in a KP thread I got great help, and knowing that many PFers appreciate the KP my first -conclusion is that I twice have got a minus variant. The second conclusion is: dont buy a newly released product- it will soon be cheaper and the factory will get the time to cure the "kinder diseases.
My digital investments are about 45000 Danish crowns, - 7000 dollars. Was this a good investment in terms of fun for money?
An argument for digital is that i is costless to press the button - until the camera breaks down

If I had not invested in digital 45000 crowns had allowed me to make 1500 - 2000 BW prints from 120 and 135 negatives.
This make me conclude, that for me digital Investment is a mistake, I am not a better photographer today, I work hard to regain my former skills in BW
Today I prefer Mamiya c 330 and Spotmatic with a handheld spotmeter or the 16 sunny rule

The world needs long lasting. repairable products. The world needs consumers that can live without being updated with the last overhyped products. If possible the construction should permit to change components in order to change specifications

I totally agree.. Any camera needs a photographer to make a good picture, not a press the buttoner.
The most obvious result of the entrance of digital is that the amount of pictures have increased astronomically, the majority( mine inclusive) are from boring to ugly. Look at Chromecast: very few interesting pictures, a lot of pictures with an odd use of PP- resulting in very strange colors and extreme contrasts. The worst is when someone reuses - copy- Ansel Adams motives and put them into PP.
The problem is that there is a path saying that new always is better than old in any aspect. If this is true is Picasso better than Rembrandt that again is better than the anonymous painters in the caves in France, f ex Lascaux. That is obvious a silly statement.
As far as I am able to evaluate my own pictures: my BW pictures from 1958 to 2012 are generally better than my digital pictures from 2012 till today. From 2012 the BW production has not the same level. I have lost some skills in exposing and darkroom, mainly due to auto . I am trying to regain the skills. My dslr are now only used in cases where a phone would be enough. My phone is not able to take pictures,.
Today I use Spotmatic and Mamiya C 330.
PS
Of cause PP is useful, if the user has discipline and not only use all the buttons on maximum.
Even if my car was able to go 200 mph its not relevant in many cases - if any.

@TATJ
Whatever lens you buy - be sure that there is an aperture ring. If there is no aperture ring you can only use max aperture. We can use old lenses on new bodies, not the opposite and that is a shame

The more simple- the better. I prefer SLRs that works without a battery, I dont need built in exposure meters, the Sunny 16 rule is good and many handheld exposure meters are exellent. A great aspect of the manual SLR is the reliability of focusing. If the camera is well adjusted the focus confirmation works for any lens. You dont have to rely on more ore less precise AF. Pictures out of focus is a photographer fault with manual SLRs. Thats not always the case with DSLRs. PF is full of focusing issues.
Concerning costs:I The minimal costs for a manual equipment compared to a digital allows you to buy lots of films etc. We still have to see if DSLRs have the same durability as SLRs. I doubt.
I am only talking about all metal or almost all metal cameras

I dont know the market in other countries, but in Denmark it is easy to get a manual SLR. Generally they are in good shape, the most common issue is stiff oil, they are used too little. All SLRs with a metal focal plane familiar to Copal square and the very underrated East Germany m42 models are good options.
It is not necessary with professional repair shops to take care of these juvels . Until my hands began to shake I made the maintenance myself. The most complicated is to change the fabric in the traditional focal plane shutter. Dont bother about the exposure meters. Today film photography is mostly slow photo and one meter in the hand is better than 10 on the camera if you are willing to use the brain. Using film for me is to get another approach than the highly automatic features in the DSLR. Developing BW is a must, enlarging yourself is the best

It would be nice if you would be a little more precise and answer the question. Is there a relation to photography in your stories that I have missed because I cant feel the vibes. I think that this forum is about photography in a broad sense, it is dangerous to open for topics not related to this. Where is the limit?

Clackers' Beginners Tip 19: Spot Metering

Spotmetering is many time no go. Instead there is a "thumb rule": when the motive is darker than the surrounding- give +2 exposure. When the motive i much lighter than the surrounndings- give-2 exposure. Make a test shot.
By the way: how is Clackers more and less interesting stories related to photography ( pentax)?

Costs of darkroom chemicals, for b&w

I prefer highly diluted developers. as BIG MAC says, the longer development times are easier to controle. BUT it is important that there is enough developer, if not there is a big risque for uneven development. A 135/120 film demands 5 ml HC110 /Rodinal, Eg 500 ml water to 5 ml Rodinal etc
Standing development works fine with many but not all films. The Rollei ortochromatic 25 Iso is awfull in standing dev, try 1:25 rodinal, it is extremely sharp

For film I use rodinal and hc110, they are concentrated and have a very long shelf life. They are cheap if you use them high diluted, look at The massive development chart for development data. I use 1:100 and standing development It is impossible to give any reliable advice about dev/film combinations, it depends on your personal taste regarding grain structure and contrast

the camera is KP, LW is live view, sorry for the wrong W.
Ihope that the following description is better
I used DNG+ with the lowest jpeg setting
The Zig zag shows on the camera screen When I download to the pc there is nothing to see.
The zig zag does not occur with higher jpeg settings
I dont have the possibility to make a photo of the camera screen which is the only relevant in this case, sending pictures where there is nothing to see is not relevant
To be honest- I dont quite understand your answer, the possible problem is camera related
regards

<<< When I examined the shots I saw that straight diagonal lines were zig zagged . looked like a stair with small steps .The sharpness on the screen was bad. When I used LW the lines also were zig zagged, which made MF impossible. The Zig ZA´g does not show on the PCs monitor
There is no zig zag on the other jpeg settings
Is this normal - related to the lowest jpg setting or is it a warning about future troubles

I think we must distinguish between film and digital. Obvious digital has a number of advantages, but I still have not seen digital bw with the same superb tonality as the old masters - Ansel Adams and others. Interresting enough one of the best danish warphotographers - Jan Grarup - states that some of his stories demand bw film to tell the story with an appropriate feeling.
Grarup has won many international prizes
