My apologies. I didn’t realize you’d previously seen the Voigt images. What lens are you going to use with the A12 M-mount?

Looks like you’re having a blast with the GXR and congrats on getting the A12 module. I bought a Voigtlander 35mm f/2 Ultron ASPH VM lens last year for it. Works great. If interested I have a hashtag on IG #nedsgxrviogt with pictures of the lens. Cheers, Ned

Morning walk with a Great Egret

This K-3 III Mono sub forum is pretty quite. So thought I’d share a series of casual snapshots I took yesterday. This great egret joined me on my walk along the bay front in Sarasota. He was a friendly guy and joked I must be really old as I was still using an SLR. But he said that’s ok, I’m sick of all the visitors trying to shoot me with their iPhones.

When I told him it was a monochrome camera, his eyes widened and he said that’s really cool, I look so much better in black and white. I’ll give you a few poses and if they’re good, send me the files, I’ll put them up on my Instagram feed.

Lens used: smc PENTAX-FA 77mm f/1.8

Thanks, he was pretty friendly walking next to me for at least 25 yards:) Don’t you have some horribly hot weather in Arizona? Stay cool. This time of the year in Sarasota, we get some great clouds coming in off the Gulf.

Brought my K3M and DFA21 to the parade. It was an overcast morning, versus the very strong Florida sun both participants and spectators usually suffer through. Except for setting white and black points in ACR, and pulling down highlights a bit, I did no other processing. I’ve got more images to look at, but thought a few of you might enjoy these. Cheers, Ned

Thanks, glad you liked the photos. No filters used. Compared to the M10M, I’m finding the need for filters is not as critical. I’m having no problems capturing, for example, the clouds in our typically strong tropical light here in Sarasota. And to clarify this point, I’m not interested in creating HDR like images, just accurate representations of the light and tones that I saw in the scene. Exposure is important though. In quite a few cases, I will underexpose the shot significantly, pulling down the highlights, but there’s so much detail in the shadows it’s easy to bring them up in post.

This forum is a little quiet, probably because those who have the camera are out enjoying it.

I’ve been shooting primarily with my FA31 and recently acquired FA21. However, I decided yesterday to take the lovely old FA*200 for my morning walk on the bay front in Sarasota.

I was pleasantly surprised by my initial test shots. Detail and contrast with this lens are quite nice. I’m simply converting my DNG’s using ACR, setting the white and black points, and pulling down highlights to my taste. No additional editing was done.

Here’s a link to my Flickr album if anyone is interested in seeing my test shots from the bay front, and two samples using my favorite model, Max.

Thanks! I haven’t tried any filters yet. But I can tell you based on using an M10M for three months a few years ago, by comparison there’s almost no need to use filters with the K3M based on my tests so far. I will at some point do some shots with and without filters, but it’s not mandatory like I found was the case with the M10M.

Thanks for that link, I hadn’t seen it before. I probably would enjoy using a fisheye, but probably wouldn’t use it enough to warrant buying one.

Thanks Rob, I’m really enjoying the camera and hopefully my photos suggest that. I have a long time acquaintance at CR Kennedy (the distributor in Australia) and I know they’re trying to get units asap.

Thanks for the link. Looks like you’re off to a great start with the camera. I had someone else blame me for their buying the camera. And I agree, Luigi’s video was really good.

Hi Adam, Ricoh Pentax US kindly loaned me a Pentax K-3 III Monochrome. I’ve only had it for five days, but I’m quite pleased with what I’m seeing so far. I’m primarily using my SMC FA31 (and FA43). The DNG files which I’m processing with ACR look great. Wonderful tones and detail. And what amazes me is I really can’t tell the difference between ISO 400 and 6400. I’ll probably have to start adding a little “grain” when processing the files with ACR. Because Tri-X never looked this clean:)

I’ve started a Flickr album and will be adding more photos over the next few weeks. Not sure if you allow links, but thought a few folks here might enjoy seeing them. And I should add, at this point I’m not doing any heavy editing. I’m just trying to understand how the Raw files render images.

Cheers, Ned

Asahi Pentax SL

Without a doubt the SL is probably my favorite early Asahi Pentax camera. As others have noted, it’s all mechanical with no metering and no battery. It’s light but feels very solid in your hands with lovely ergonomics. I have other Spotmatics, but don’t trust their metering at all, so I’ll either use my Luna Pro, but most often I just use the Lightmeter app on my iPhone.

Here’s a link to an Instagram feed awhile ago showing a few images shot with the SL and my Auto- Takumar 55mm f/1.8 if you’re interested in seeing how this combo performs.

M 28/3.5 - Anyone have hi-res scans/samples?

Greetings,

I have a mint copy of the K version (SMC 28mm/3.5) and absolutely love it. Mine has the original hood which is a must if you’re going to get this lens.

Here are a few sample shots taken with the K-5IIs. I also have used it frequently with my K-1 II but don’t have any photos posted on Flickr. The lens performs equally well with the K-1.

cataract and dominant eye

I had cataract surgery to both eyes, one week apart this past April. My surgeon explained that my right eye, which was my dominant eye, will still be the dominant eye once both lenses have settled in.

You might want to clarify your concern with your surgeon.

My procedure and recovery has been a breeze. I joked with my surgeon, who’s also a good photographer, that my eyes have an increase in brightness of at least 3 stops and the colors now remind me of my days shooting with Kodachrome:)

Good luck!

DA 15mm + 21mm or Ricoh GR II

I’d take the GR. For the past 4+yrs the only cameras I’ve taken on trips are the GR/GRII and my iPhone. The GR is so compact and perfect for travelling light, Plus you’re getting SLR-like image quality in a pocket-sized camera. Also, if you’re wandering around in a busy city, you won’t have a big camera bag to attract attention.

I just came back from Scotland. If you’re on Instagram, I created a hashtag #nedzscotland which has about 70 images from the trip if you’d like to see the type of images I shot with the GR.

Have a great trip, Scotland is wonderful!

Cheers,
Ned

As others have suggested, your problem could be the adapter.

I have two 35/f3.5’s and have tested them both with a genuine Pentax adapter on my K-5 IIs with no issues. Here’s a link to a few sample shots that I did recently. It’s actually a nice little lens. Hope you get yours working.

Here are two posts on Instagram from AUG 17 showing my use of the Ikea lamp which works very well.

Also the rear element is the one that used thorium, so it’ll take you forever to shine light through the front element and the thorium fog will never be completely and evenly removed. Note in my photo the IKEA light is focusing directly on top of the rear element.

Hope this helps a little.

I gave up on the GRII's WiFi implementation...too wonky and unreliable for me.

I bought an Apple Lightning to SD Card camera reader and it works like a charm.

Although this is an old Instagram post, it highlights how I convert GR DNG files using Snapseed on my iPhone. Thought it might be of interest to you.
