The fig tree is just on the other side of property fence. These days, I make a point of taking out with me my K3 iii with mounted 150-450mm, all on a tripod, when I go out to hang up a load of laundry, just in case!

We seem to be having a never-ending winter here. So I've been skiing regularly. This is from a Nordic ski outing tonight.

from a recent session of 'insomniac photography' a few hours before this place opened. Apparently I startled the owner. I didn't think anyone was there, so I sat the tripod up in front of the door to get a shot of the neon sign. Then someone pokes up from behind the counter. I waved and she came to the door. Apparently she saw the tripod and at first thought it was a weapon. I apologized & we laughed. Felt bad though. Had no intentions of scaring anyone nor did I think anyone would be there at 4:30am (they opened at 7:00.)

Hi all !
My attempt at at this comet. Last seen 50 000 years ago, so glad I caught it this time
I had to hurry before the clouds rolled in, so not as many exposures as I wanted to have.

When light gives me no choice, I very occasionally shoot below 1/1000th hand-held with the Monster (my nickname for the 150-450mm big fella!). Whenever possible I look around for a tree, fence, post, wall, or whatever to lean against. But I am short, with a slight build, and just turned 79. I can imagine bigger, younger, stronger would allow using this lens hand-held regularly at such low speeds. But mostly, I try to stay around 1/2000th, and allow the ISO to range between 100 and 6400.

But certainly, the Shake Reduction on the K3 iii is fantastic.

I shot birds in flight at 2500th when possible and f7.1 most days or f8 when light was extra good. Mine required fine focus adjustment on my K-1 to get it perfect, but once it was dialed in, it was on! Don't be afraid to let the ISO roam in good daylight... you can deal with that kind of noise easily later, but a blurry shot is never going to be ideal. All hand held.

One thing I will mention. Fine focus adjustment on a stationary object at short distances in artificial light at home is one thing, but using it in the field can be another thing entirely. Don't be afraid to believe your eyes and make adjustments in the field. I got mine close at home but it was in the field in natural light where I got it dialed in the rest of the way. Use the zoom preview function. I had mine set to jump to 100% on first click of the wheel. You wouldn't think there is a lot of difference between -2 and -5, but at 100ft, it can be huge, especially when trying to nail a small critters eyes then crop a postage stamp size portion of that shot into full screen, heh.

Hope that helps,
Eric

Before dawn, made it to Natural Bridge, near Albany. High cloud overhead, and the eastern horizon was glowing red, with the colour spilling over to the south. Lightning storm casually making its way eastward on the horizon. Taken with Nikon 19mm T/SE and Fujifilm GFX50R, two minute exposure.
