These are from safari in Nagara Hole forest in KR, India. These are shot over 3 days(two sessions of 3hrs each, per day). Highlight was sighting of 2 Elephants and one Tiger (for 2-3minutes). Shots are tight because I was using 500mm prime and subject were close to jeep. In fact I had to use FULL focus range on my lens. Tiger sighting happened at 6pm. Light was very poor. My settings were 1/125sec F5.6. AutoISO went up to 6400. I was using monopod. Open jeep safari vehicles are allowed only in Tourist zone where density of animals is less compared to core-zone where only Forest dept vehicles are allowed. Time being close to monsoon, chances of sightings are low because water is everywhere. Animals move a lot during summer in search of water, that increases chances of sighting. But in summer background is brown, not the green of monsoon.

These two videos are shot using Z7 & 500mm PF lens, from a boat. So there is lot of vibration. There was Peacock dancing on river bank, and there was an Elephant taking mud bath. There is no pro-editing here. I do not have time to learn that. I just clipped unnecessary parts using AviDemux.

Place is Bhadra Wildlife reserve, India.

Lens is light so it gets used more often. I have made several videos using this lens, it is possible to hand hold it for 10 minutes or more.

Lens is sharp. In order to see the real sharpness, I have set the sharpness for default jpeg to zero. This made the sharpness of jpeg embedded in RAW as zero. Many image viewers show the embedded jpeg, and that makes it difficult to judge the sharpness. That is why I set the default jpeg's sharpness to zero. Images posted above were clearly sharp at 100%. When doing BIF number of images where beak is clearly sharp are low. This depends on body. I have not tested this lens with D500.

You must be excited to get 500PF lens. Waiting list goes for 6months.

I chose Nikon over Sony & Canon just because of this one lens.

In case of BIF I think the role of luck is substantial :-)

Adorama re-selling defective gear?

Once AmazonWarehouse did ship a faulty item that I had returned to them. I think it is mistake of some worker, not company policy. In such circumstances I do not blame the employee because employment scene is not that great, they work under lot of stress. I think the quality of service is proportional to the hourly wage they get paid.

As you may already know it is light, that was the prime reason for buying it. Since it is light, you use it more. Pictures are sharp. Some of the credit for accuracy goes to body. As you may know there is long waiting list for PF lens. If you decide to purchase, pre-order with small retail store as their waiting list will be smaller compared to B&H or Adorama.

As you may know, yesterday Sony filled 200-600mm slot. I recommend checking out that too.

F mount lens can be used on Z mount body but AF does not work for screwdriver lens, that is AF-D lens. In general designers will have more freedom when they are not constrained by backward compatibility. To be fair to existing customers manufacturers must keep this window larger. That way they can balance between old and new. Same rules apply to software products too. It is good to rewrite code once in a while. Some companies honestly rewrite their code but some just change the top layer and give a new name. I suspect that is what Adobe is doing.

Z mount lens released till now are all non-VR and depend on IBIS.

Make sure AE-L was not engaged and camera was using A & S for current scene. I have pressed AE-L by mistake. Another wild possibility is enabling bracketing.

I think more DSLR users may switch to MILC once Canon and Nikon come up with APSC. Some of my friends use D500. They do not want FF. Once Nikon comes with APSC they may hop on to MILC.

Landscape photography (getting started)

In landscape photography if you want mind blowing landscape shots then where you live matters. If you do not live in place with mind blowing landscape, you have to travel. If you are happy with moderate landscape shots, then you may be able to find wherever you live.

To capture tranquillity, i suggest going there during sunset. There should not be more shades between light and dark. Try doing video once, see if it is able to capture.

Other options are. Use CPL filter, it makes colors pop out. Shoot right after rain. Focus on macro shots, like rock with nice texture, barks etc..

Advice requeseted for concerns with my Acratech Ball Head QR Clamp

This is how it fits. This picture is taken with RRS QR plate but I have used it with non-RRS plates without any problem. RRS clamp is expensive but it gives long life. Mine is 10-12years old. RRS clamp is 6 inch long and that makes contact-area long.

Going back to Arcatech clamp. There is a spring attached to knob(knob is used for tightening). There was some problem with spring and knob, and it prevented clamp from going closer to QR plate. .

I have experienced this issue. QR clamp that comes with Ultimate ballhead is not that good. I replaced the QR-clamp with RRS Circular clamp.

I have driven for long distance to take few snaps. I have gone through the guilt of damage that my driving has caused. Agreed that me not driving will not correct everything that has gone wrong. But I just want to do my part whether it matters in picture is secondary.

This is somewhat related to artist and environment. Many fine-art artists (painters) use paper towel to wipe brushes in between the strokes. They can avoid that waste by using rags.

I am surprised that camera manufacturer's do just sampling test. Every unit of Xbox and Play Station undergoes set of automated tests. That is followed by few manual tests. Unit has to pass these tests before going to customer. There are set of extreme tests and they are done only on random samples. They do extensive investigation to find root cause of failed units.

Camera body is pricier than game consoles so every unit should under go at least basic tests. If one goes by the price difference between OEM lens and 3rd party lens, there is decent margin too.

DSLR has mechanical parts, may be that is what stops from having automated tests. MILC should be more test friendly.

Big Price Drops on Nikon Z6 & Z7 already?

I am not surprised about price drop because when I purchased Z7 kit in India, in Feb, price that I paid was less compared to B & H price at that time. I paid $3860 for Z7, 24-70mm f4, FtoZ adaptor, Nikon bag & 64gb qxd card. It come with Nikon warranty. To give another example Nikon 200 f4 MACRO is 1270$ in India, and B & H price is 1800$. Hood for Nikon 200 f4 MACRO(Hn-30) is 28$ in India compared to 47$ in B &H.

Sharpness of focus

These pictures do not show lens problem. You may be expecting beak to be in focus but it seems some other body part is in focus. So you have to check where was your focus point. There could be front focus & back focus problem. In order to test that do the scale test. It is difficult diagnose front focus & back focus problem using these pictures.

Darktable's LP filter can recover details from dark areas. First meter the photo to brightest spot and then apply following LPF technique. Important parameter is contrast, it should be -ve. This brightens dull areas and dims bright areas.

If it is open jeep, protect the camera from dust. I carry just one tele lens and a body in a gym bag. I take camera out only when I am about to take picture. Rest of the time camera stays inside the bag.

Needs are specific to person.

Features like magnifying are not cluttering the viewfinder any way. When you press magnify button EVF goes full-screen mode, absolutely no icons.
