90 days later, got the camera back.
There are significant flaws in the newleaf contract. Funny part I asked if they would extend the contract for the 3 months as it was not in my possesion. The reality- if you are a professional, never rely on just one camera. Fortunately this is only a hobby for me.

It's official- Newleaf made it clear that they have no time requirements for getting the repair done- in fact, by their contract, this could go on for eternity.

The humorous point is that if they just got a camera in my hand, I wouldn't have all this free time to be sounding off on them.....

Almost wondering if they are hoping the warranty period runs out before the repair is made????? At this point, nothing would surprise me.

And so the Saga continues- Newleaf said yesterday:
"Good afternoon,
New Leaf has received further details that the parts needed to repair your camera have no date of availability. Without an idea of when repairs can be completed, New Leaf has leverage to look into other service options. A representative with New Leaf will contact you by phone tomorrow to discuss options available to resolve your claim."

It sounded great- I called, was promised a call back, and now they claim
"Your service provider has indicated the manufacturer has the parts and they are in transit to be delivered by the end of next week. We are awaiting the tracking number for confirmation. In the event the parts do not arrive as stated, New Leaf will seek other service options.
Thank you,
=Customer Care

I have reached my limit- this is what was told to me eight weeks ago, and on top of that, even if the parts do come in (no tracking provided) it will be another few weeks after that for the repair to occur, shipment back to adams, who then can ship it back to me.

I've asked them to make good on their intent that got my hopes up- otherwise, looking at another month of this customer dis-service hell.

I was told by Adams that it is an electronics problem, so I am assuming the control board.
it was not anything mechanical, otherwise I believe Adams would have been able to get the parts

So here's a nice catch- newleaf says that as long as the parts show back-ordered, they maintain that the camera can be fixed. This means that this could go on forever without resolution. They could not give me an answer to how long they would let this go on till they considered it un-repairable. So far, we are at nearly 7 weeks in Precisions hands, with no sign of parts coming in.
Currently have very little faith in their repair or replace warranty.

nzondlo- if it is something Adams is able to repair, they are a pleasure to work with. My camera had a problem with the circuit board, which Ricoh only allows precision to work on.

It is unreasonable for anyone to expect Precision to stock every part for every camera they service. (and likely impossible) It is not unreasonable to expect Ricoh to stock and manage a supply of nearly every component for their products.

It is completely unacceptable to not get an answer on when that part is expected to be available. Just tell me the tracking number and i can watch it, or get an estimate from the supplier when it will be delivered. I cant believe Precision would hold off on ordering waiting for a bulk order- if so, for the savings of a few dollars in shipping, they are alienating their customers...

Very curious to see what New Leaf does.. stay tuned

Thanks for letting me vent-

The root problem is not getting information that should be readily available. If Ricoh stocked complete inventory in Japan, there is no reason why it could not be delivered anywhere in the world at a reasonable cost- and certainly in the US- in less than a week.

I understand that a complex piece of equipment can have a problem- but not being able to service it in a timely manner is infuriating. Not providing information to Precision, and Precision refusing to share information with me directly, has made this a real mess.

I did ask Adorama (where I got the K1 from) a month into this if they would give me a discount on a K-70. They told me to pound salt. They missed an opportunity to gain a customer for life.

So glad this is just a hobby for me- but as a hobby, it is supposed to be relaxing. It is now anything but that.

Adams electronics- excellent serviced on arrival, determined it had to go to Precision. Mentally prepared me for the current nightmare.

Precision -Awful- Camera had to be sent there for factory parts. Parts for my K1 have been on order for 5 weeks. "we hope they show up soon" was there only response . Surprising, as in this day and age, we have computers that can tell us when parts are scheduled to ship, or how long they will be until they are manufactured.

New Leaf- the warranty service- has been good, and was trying to find out more info. I was asked to call the manager back after two days so that he could find out if there was any info on the parts, but when I called back, the person - not the same, as that manger was away- gave me a hard time about calling them, as they are not a parts supplier or manufacturer- even though they had the notes in front of them from two days ago. The first manager even hinted at finding another resolution if they couldn't get an answer on when the parts were arriving to precision.

On the verge of giving up on Pentax- sorry- being brand loyal has become impossible. True, I like to use my imagination when I take photos, but it has gone a little too far when they ask me to imagine that I have a camera in my hands.

This camera has been very well taken care of, but started having an electrical issue where the shutter triggered 3 times, (not in HDR mode) Adams confirmed it was a circuit board problem 8000 on the shutter count.

Thrilled to have gotten this shot-

not the greatest technically, but handheld. I was thrilled to get the plane relatively clear, with just the lights from the fireworks on the wings lighting it

Great write up-
I was able to set the timer in bulb mode, but it seemed to ignore the time set- going to 5 minutes when I just wanted two. Will play with it some more. It's likely that I switched the bulb mode to press once for start, once for stop.

Also, when everything is set and using live view to focus, I can't zoom the live view. I would love to do that to ensure best focus like I do when in manual mode. any hints?

Green button did it- but I now will see if the bulb mode can be set to a timer- better yet, will order a handheld shutter release tonight. Birthday is coming, will ask for a real tripod.

The moon- nearly full, was behind this- ignore the exposure- about 1min 20 I will work on focus, but no star trails compared to what I was seeing before.

Thanks for making this happen for me- I'm very excited.

Astrotracker use question

Wow- thanks for the great info- I'm pretty sure I did not press the green button to engage. I'll report back if that was it.

My impression was that the astrotracker would move the sensor for up to 5 minutes? but I have wondered how focal length would effect that.

I was using the long exposure at f13 , relatively low iso- just to check the astro tracker function. I have gotten a few good shots without astrotracker using different settings and keeping the exposure at 25 seconds.

Will try again tonight- looks pretty clear out, even if the moon is up... good to practice.

Thanks for all the help-

I've learned to turn the gps on first
Then I tun astrotracker on, and do a calibration (i do find humor in tumbling - in the dark-the most expensive camera I have ever owned. I believe this was designed to thin the herd)

Then attach to the tripod (Yay for the LED feature)

I'm shooting with my zoom lens set at 28 mm ( hope for a smaller fixed lens in the near future)

bulb setting

f 13 3 minute exposure iso 800

still getting star trails.

Do the settings look right? There is a green dot next to the astrotracker icon in the lower right, the icon also says "off" but it is not highlighted. Any hints on what Im missing? I don't think it is camera shake, as they all look consistant. Would love any advice, as this feature is one of the main attractions to this camera for me. (ok, it really is awesome all around, but I really want to get good at this.)

Thanks,
Rob
