I own both lenses and also K-3 II and K-3 III. One reason for me to get the 16-50 plm was that I was never fully satisfied with the (slightly decentered) 16-85. The 16-50 plm works fine on both cameras.
If your copy of the 16-85 is a good one and you‘re happy with it I don‘t see a need to go for the bigger, heavier, more expensive 16-50 plm. Unless you miss the wider aperture in certain situations - and even then you could pick a 50/1.4 or 35/2 or an other large aperture lens instead.

I had a similar experience with the K-3 III when it came out. The explanation then was that the sensor size is slightly larger than the area my camera used, hence a frame with odd colors around the actual picture.
Since my RAW software couldn’t interpret the exif information correctly it showed the whole raw content. The fix was to add the camera information to the software when this update became available. After that the frame was gone.
With KF being quite new you might have the same effect.

For two years - but it sure didn‘t feel that long - you have been my reason for thinking TGIF and look for your latest post at breakfast. Thanks for entertaining and educating.
Making something that reads and feels so light must have been a lot of hard work!

First of all be sure to install the latest firmware on your new camera. We are at version 2.0 already and performance - including AF - has significantly improved. AF being off is the most probable reason for soft pics.
Second the 16-85 can be a tricky lens according to my experience. Often the pictures are fine, but occasionally there is a softness to an area of the picture like there was „temporarily decentering“, like some element inside the lens tilted in the process of focusing. I suggest you do test shots for decentering at various focal lengths and check AF with a clear high-contrast target. This should give you an idea whether everything is fine with your copy or not.
As for the highlight weighted metering: I consider it a special mode for situations when there are actual very bright highlights (sun reflected by water, close-up of insects) and like you use the multi pattern metering as standard.

Welcome home.
I can relate to changing brands along the photographic journey, only to end up where you started from… only wiser.
The one question that comes to my mind when reading about you recent Pentax gear: so you have invested in FF and APS-C (which usually means you have different use cases for each format) and in three lenses that cover similar FoV? That sounds quite redundant and makes me curios : why not one format and a wider range of lenses?

Thanks. Understanding that COMP stands for composition (and not compensation, as I initially thought) helped a lot. Your explanation made sense of this feature.

It would also help if you could be a bit more specific in which fields the K-3 III does not live up to your expectations. When I got mine there was some Wow but also some learning curve to understand why the new camera did not what I expected.
Have you performed any firmware update? It might not be recommended if you are considering to return the camera, but it will have an impact on the camera performance.

When your primary goal is to get wider shots, why not rather buy a lens? There is quite a choice of lenses for less than the price of a new K1-II.

I have noticed such slight defocus when using other focus points than the center, too. However does this effect occur with several lenses (not limited to the 16-50 plm) and it does occur only occasionally - most of the time the focus is correct.
From what I have experienced the K3-III may have difficulties to hit the focus if the target has a weak contrast, if the brightness is low, if I produce some slight camera movement while pressing the trigger (hence focusing on a changing target) or if the focus adjustment needed is only minor. Usually if I keep the camera steady and half-press the trigger several time I can hear how the focus is adjusted until after two or at the most three adjustments it will stay and typically be in focus.
I‘m talking about focusing in AF-S and selecting a single point.

Another option would be to create two user modes, one set up with single shot (and all the other settings as appropriate for the intended situation) and another setup with continuous shots. Then you only need to turn the mode dial.

Regardless of which lens you pick: don‘t expect a great depth of field when shooting at small distance! This is one of you requests, but it’s a physical law that narrowing distance to the object will narrow DoF.
I can recommend the FA 100/2.8 Macro which I use frequently to shoot flowers and insects.

GPS is a dream come true ... no more guessing where one has taken a certain picture. One big reason I love my K3-II.
It seems odd the every cell phone will put GPS information in the pictures taken, but with expensive cameras that still is a rare feature.

My 11-18 has seen quite some usage and I‘m still happy with it. The only limitation I‘ve experienced is that my K3-II has sometimes difficulties to get focus right when using it at the wide end focussing on very distant objects. But that‘s more a technical limitation of the camera resp. the AF method.
I ended up using the 11-18 as main lens on my last trip and it delivered beautifully.
I even tried astro shots for the first time. The clamp is a musthave for this, since you shoot wide open, just focus once before sunset and lock focus.
Does that answer your question?

My favorites are #4 and #10. Design #17 resembles the brand logo of Peugeot, a french carmaker. I‘m not sure if this might cause some headache?
