An upgrade on the K1-ii would be good if it could improve on the buffer and tracking to match the K3-iii, and a replacement for the DA 560mm that is built for the K1, something like a DFA 500 f4, or 600mm f4. Wouldn't that be nice?

I use my K1-ii for wildlife shooting and find it more than adequate when teamed with the DFA 150-450. The tracking and buffer are a bit slow, but I still get enough keepers to make it fun. A K3-iii would be nice for wildlife but for now the K1 is still doing the job nicely for me. The quality on the keepers is amazing. I know it's considered a landscape platform, but I think it is a great all-rounder as well.

Great shots, love the rich colours. The K1 certainly is a great landscape camera.

I wonder if they will ever look at a KP-ii, it took them so long to get around to the K3-iii. It would be nice though as I like the tilt screen on the KP for doing low shots and macro which you don't have on the K3-iii. Though the new K3 is awesome for wildlife, especially birds, where you don't need a tilt screen.

I sent my DFA150-450 to the importer here in Australia, they tried very hard to work out what was happening. They did a major clean on the inside of all the contacts and said that if that didn't work then they would have to send it back to Japan for repairs. After I got it back it hasn't been as bad but still occasionally drops out of auto focus to manual with no warning. This is on both my KP and K1-ii so not the camera. I'm putting up with it as when it is working it is great, which is 99% of the time, but I have missed a few wildlife shots because of it. If it starts getting worse, I will send it to Japan via the importer to fix properly. I can't fault the importer in Australia which is C.R. KENNEDY in Melbourne, the team in the service dept is first class. It looks like it is just an intermittent fault in the lens.

Hi jgnfld, the battery is a small issue for me. When travelling I just keep 2 spare batteries in my pack. Though one fully charged battery is normally enough for a day shooting. When I do wildlife stuff on my KP with my 55-300 PLM I just put my battery grip on with the extra battery and this normally gets me through a session without any trouble, even with my 150-450 its usually adequate enough. I think the KP with the 55-300 is a great combo for wildlife photography, it's light yet efficient. I normally use my 150-450 on my K1-ii and get great results with that combo, even birds in flight.

Hi Fogel70, looks like we are on the same page, thanks for your feedback. I see you are in Sweden, my great grandfather came from Klippan so maybe its genetic. ---------- Post added 3rd Nov 2023 at 08:18 PM ----------
Hi Des, I agree, most people think of it as a kit lens, but it is really very versatile and quite consistent in quality for its price. And it teams great with the KP.

I just spent 6 weeks traveling through Europe and am full of praise for my KP. I have a K1 system but elected to take my KP due to its lighter weight and compactness. I took 3 lenses as well, my 18-135, a 12-24 and a 55-300 PLM. On review after processing approximately 3500 raw images I see that over 95% of the images were taken on the 18-135 lens. The KP with this lens proved to be perfect travel setup for me. Being 24mp I have the option of cropping down and still having an image that reproduces well, actually I can't believe how good the images are. Always in focus with great dynamic range. I mostly shoot in TAv mode, but at times when in a hurry I used full auto with excellent results. Being so well sealed I never had to worry about getting it wet. It's an awesome camera though it seems to be forgotten with the introduction of the new K3 III. I seem to gravitate to it rather than my K1 quite often as it is so much fun to use. Even for wildlife with the 55-300 PLM I get some great birds in flight shots and the 7 FPS speed is more than enough for what I do. The KP is just a great all-rounder in my opinion. A couple of images follow.

Hi, I have been having trouble with my DFA 150-450 also, dropping out of autofocus into MF and back again. This initially happened on my KP body, thinking it was the KP i started using it on my K1. Unfortunately its happening still, though intermittently. I have heard that the AF module can fail so by the look of it that is what is happening, I hope it isn't too expensive to get repaired as it is probably my most used lens.

Hi, I have a KP and have used my DFA 150-450 on it for the last year or so. It has been a great combo.
I have recently begun to get the F - - warning occasionally over the last month. It's a bit frustrating.
I cleaned the contacts with a microfibre cloth and it seemed to improve it somewhat. What is the best way to clean the lense/body contacts actually?
I always use a sash strap connected to the lense tripod mount as I think it gives better balance and theoretically stress the camera as much in my opinion.

I chose this image with the foreground in it as it gives the photo more depth and realism I think. I have some without as well but they looked almost unreal.

In reply to DeadJohn, I guess I used the wrong terminology there. What I should have said was image quality. I made this comment based on the review on this site See below quote from that article...
'While we still consider the Pentax K-3 II to be the APS-C flagship model due to features such as higher burst speeds and dual SD slots, as this review will show, the Pentax KP actually surpasses the K-3 II in image quality and customization options and it doesn't lag far behind the K-3 II in ruggedness. The KP exposes the K-3 II's age, as the KP is more modern in many ways, through built-in Wi-Fi and a facelifted user interface to faster general performance.'
In reply to Asylfox, those links were helpful thanks. I reread them and combined with comments from everyone else I think I will go with the KP at this point as I don't need the higher burst rate the way I like to work. The higher ISO is quite attractive for low light situations. I will get the battery grip to give me the the greater battery life and by the sound of it it will be about the same weight as the K3ii without the grip. Pentax/Ricoh Australia is out of KP stock at the moment so may have to wait or look elsewhere.
If they bring out a new flagship to replace the K3ii soon I guess I can get it as well and if not no loss.
Thanks to everyone for their input. Happy shooting.

I am trying to make up my mind as to which is better for wildlife photography. The Newer KP or the older K3 ii. They both have different features that may be advantageous. The burst rate on the K3 or the better ISO on the KP. Does anyone have both bodies that can recommend from experience? I mostly use my KS-2 with a DA 150-450 at the moment. Max shutter rate is 5 fps.
