the manual didnt help that much with this particular issue, but the walk through house just provided allowed me to do it and the manual did not explain it in that way so thats good I got it now!

I am in a photography class where I am the only pentaxian, no big deal but our teacher uses you tube for some how to's and he thinks my camera is impressive but that it has TOO MANY features for being a beginner and keeps telling me "it's a shame" haha I don't think it's a shame, but I do have to do my own research on how to figure certain things out we are covering in class.
besides not being able to successfully use spot metering and the 18% grey card to find the proper exposure
I am now having trouble figuring out how to adjust my own white balance using a custom white balance.
The you tube video he showed us for this uses Nikon and Canon for a walk through on how to set your white balance. You Tube |
src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/LiPL73mLeJ8?controls=1" allowfullscreen> |
I know cameras are all different but I can't seem to find how the Pentax can do this without actually using the color graph and moving the spot around on the graph to choose the coloring in the WB..
Is the way the guy is doing it in the video even possible on my K3? Choosing my own temperatures seems advanced for someone who is just learning!

I have taken over 500 photos in 3 days, I pulled out about 50 of the better ones.
Mind you, I do not know how to use the camera yet so I was taking a lot of photos and adjusting the ISO, Shutter speed and Aperture on the same subject until I found what worked. Sort of haha
I barely know what these settings mean so I have a lot of reading to do and learning to do!
but I wanted to share my first experience with everyone :) Trisha Pitcher | Flickr
Should be public
basically they are out of focus, grainy, too dark or too light haha

Thanks , also I see on here you have to upload pictures that are 1mp? Mine are 11 uploaded from the camera. What do you use to get that image size down to upload directly to the forum?

Hey everyone! I have taken about 500 photos in 2-3 days haha, what can I use to upload my photos to a public album in order to share them with the forum? Photobucket only offers 2GB of free storage!
Also, I guess I will have to start another thread to share my pictures so be on the look out!

Haha! Well, I think I got in a little over my head but I'll take it one lens at a time, a k3 with a 55-300mm, an 18-135mm, and a generously gifted veteran Tamron lens 70-300mm. thanks to everyone on this forum!!
I'll want to get like a 35 or 55 or something of that nature in a couple months! But these different lenses will be really cool to try out and get a feel for different ones etc but I suspect I'll spend a lot of time at first with the 18-135mm!

Thank you, I double checked my sent mail and it appears I did not send her a message so I just sent one to her now about it.
I appreciate your words, everyone here has already been so helpful and it helps calm the nervousness about a purchase by listening to those experienced with these products as well as the people selling them.
We will see what happens!! I will let everyone know if a purchase of a K3 happens!

my only concern is that problem that showed up with the sticking shutter, spending the amount of money im about to spend, and this being my first real real camera I am worried about that being an issue I have to deal with as a newbie learning on a possible problem camera. I have an old nikon film camera that has a sticking shutter issue and its like ya never know when you will get over exposed photos!
I did contact him a couple days ago though but I have not heard anything.

Go figure that I would want a camera that is out of stock on every website recommended to me! (ones at a used price) I know that there are other bodies out there but I am set on K3, so I will find you! Just trying to find one at a lower price but if not I will just have to bite the bullet and make the full price purchase!

Okay, there is a used K3 on B&H for just under $600, body only
Adorama has none!
Is B&H a trusted site? It comes with a 90day used warranty.
I think I am def going to go with the 55-300.... but im going to read about it more and the brand of lens options. And one more lens yet to be determined haha
Thank you everyone soooo much his has been such a great help, can't wait to find more threads to help in my adventures!

Here is another question I am embarrased to be asking .....if there are lenses that are specifically "50mm" or "35mm" and then theres 16-85mm.... can't that 16-85 do what the 50mm can do on its own with just more? What are the reasons to buy a lens that is only "50 or 30mm" ...I am shaking my head too haha im afraid to ask

Yeah, that is absolutely what will happen and I def need to focus on just one while learning the ropes! I think I am settling into the idea of one for now and another one in a couple months or so, thanks!

And this is where I am at on the Noob status....when looking at LensRental what is the difference between Medium format and K mount capabilities?
Thank you, renting a lens will probably end up being a really great idea, I could get the camera or a kit and start learning on that and then try out one of the more pricier lenses before making a purchase in a couple months!

Thank you!
My type of photography is going to vary...right now due to my work and interests wildlife is my primary focus. I am usually taking close ups of flowers, bees, butterflies etc and photos of project sites so landscapes that we have planted so landscapes with trees or wildflowers.
What I have always wanted to be able to do is that that long range shot...so being able to take a picture of that hawk or eagle in the tree without it looking like this tiny black dot. Understanding that I can't afford a zoom lens that gets me a shot of that birds eyeball but being able to see identifying marks and maybe even print a few out for my wall of the wildlife.
This is what I really want to capture maybe because I have just never been able to before.
I will still be taking close ups though as well.
Those 2 things would be the primary use of the K3.
as an addition, I will be visiting Africa in Feb of next year and I hope to have some basics down of my camera to be able to take it along and get some great shots. I might not be able to get the lion eating the wildebeast but we will see, I am a pretty daring person hahaha
your third question...is something I just have no idea. Is post processing on my own going to be where I start because its a bit easier while I learn the camera? If it is, than thats probably where im at....if letting the camera do it requires me to have extensive knownledge on how to use it to make it do exactly what I want...that will take time for me but I feel like that could be an ultimate goal.
My total budget for body and say...2 lenses (3 if im super lucky) is a whopping 2k. Yikes!
Knowing myself, I will totally overwhelm myself to start, because I am the "need it all and need it now" type of person so I am hoping that by doing this research and talking to people that it calms that side of me and puts me in a more practical place to start. I could start with one lens and get a second one in a month or so after playing around and then another one after that but it seems my interests require at least 2 to start? what do you think?

I am interested in buying a new or used K3. I believe my mind is made up on the body style, but looking for lenses...I am brand new to these types of cameras in general and while not entirely new to photography, I def need to brush up on all this terminology!
Basically a total noob so Hi!
