A shame we don't have nice streams like that around here (especially with the rock formations). You definitely have a well composed shot, and a good subject. I'd say come out here to cambria co. one of these days, but our landscape is looking pretty bleak due to the indian summer.

Yes. the full moon is similar to earth landscapes at midsummer noon. The sun is directly overhead so you don't get good shadows.

200mm is challenging for the moon. I feel that anything less than 300mm needs something else in the frame for an interesting moon photo.

If you are lucky to have a stable sky with no atmospheric turbulence, and really nail focus, you might be able to heavily crop a 200mm image. f/8 instead of f/11 might sacrifice some lens sharpness with the 50-200, but the shorter exposure speed might capture a fleeting cell of stable air.

If you want feedback, I suggest starting your own thread so we don't hijack Kodiak's original post.

The price seems fair, but I'm apprehensive about not accepting returns especially as a new member. I would strongly encourage to change your return policy as a sign of goodwill. (Speaking from personal experience, as a seller on marketplace)

The things you learn about family members after a funeral.

A lot of things are lost to the ages if family members never talk about them. Going through all of the things at my grandpap's house after he died has been quite the learning experience, especially since he never talked about anything. There were quite a few things that my mother didn't know about either, and she grew up in that house.

These are things we've learned through our exploration:

1.) My great grandfather worked as a lineman for both Pennsylvania Edison and Penelec (for over 35 years).
2.) My great grandmother during WWI worked assembling liberty engines for aircraft and received a congratulatory letter from the company because they were able to exceed their quota.
3.) My grandfather was quite the photography nut (as evidenced by the sheer amount of slides and film found).
4.) My grandfather was awarded 6 bronze stars for his service in the USCE during WWII (he never talked about his military service, ever. Even my mother didn't know until she had gone through some of his paperwork, and we have been unable to find any of his medals/awards thus far.)

Has anyone else found out any remarkable family history that was unknown until sorting an estate?

Nature "Bug" Watchers

One of the most pleasurable parts of my job is sharing nature discovery with young people. They are capable of such intense concentration, and notice so much about even the "common and ordinary" things. So here are some childrens' random "ordinary" discoveries from the past few months…

Many butterflies enjoy a snack of salt and other minerals. This Eastern Tailed Blue was licking a sweaty finger!

West Virginia White butterflies prefer Spring Beauty nectar:

While Pipevine Swallowtails visit Spring Larkspur for their snacks:

Here's another Pipevine Swallowtail working the Turk's Cap Lily blooms on Camp Creek Bald. You can see the pollen on his wing!

Oaks are prone to a disease called "slime flux." It's a bacterial infection of the sap. Some butterflies are attracted to the smelly ooze - like this Question Mark, just rolling up his tongue after licking the flux:

All I noticed was the Red Trillium, but the children noticed the arachnid visitor:

Speaking of arachnids, this one has caught a "delicious" Spreadwing damselfly. Once again, I would have walked right by, but the youngsters noticed it immediately:

We kept the children at a safe distance from this little lady! Mrs. Black Widow is in the midst of a Tent Caterpillar meal:

Here's one of our native mantids - the Carolina Mantid. She's just caught a rather "spicy" meal of bee!

Perhaps that's why this bee is sticking her tongue out! Or maybe she's just feasting on goldenrod nectar:

Here's another insect at the "goldenrod restaurant." Locust Longhorn Beetle larvae eat Black Locust tree bark. But the adults prefer pollen:

Look carefully at these fungi, and you'll see what the children spotted. Those dark "stripes" are snail tooth marks!

I am always amazed and humbled at the powers of observation of a small child. Hope you enjoyed these glimpses through their eyes, and that you'll share your critique!

What is he doing with this black thing and the funny mirror in front of it ?

A bycatch, because I actually wanted to take pictures of flying bumblebees ....
Therefore the high ISO setting for a short exposure time.

The visitor stayed only briefly and disappeared again ....

Milky way pano colour

Hi everyone,

I have just started trying some Astrophotography with my K5 and Tamron 17-50 2.8.
This is my first pano milky way, it is 14 photos stitched, 20 seconds ISO 12800 f3.2 17mm.
Maybe the ISO was too high?
This was taken 2 miles from a town in the England UK

I used Rawtherepee for processing, copied and pasted the pp3 file from one photo in the pano to all the rest,
to have the settings the same . There is a sudden colour change from purple to blue in part of the
photo, is this down to high ISO?. I haven`t tried the wavelets setting, would wavelets help a smooth
transition form purple to blue?. The white balance was the same for each photo.

That's not bad at all considering the lens , which I think is the key limitation. It's also tough to focus with that small focusing ring. Could be something to look at.

Great idea for a club Paul.

Well, I seldom use my k100d but I do. The only reason it does not get much prime-time is because it won't work all that well with rechargeable batteries. I completely agree on the rendering though, it's kinda special.

I'd hate to think the seller tried to slip one past you, but at least they refunded you without a fight. I'm glad you were able to successfully work on it so now you have a functioning lens and a little experience with what's inside.

My only caution is to keep an eye on it and twist the focus ring back and forth before each time you mount it to make sure it still turns easily. If sand made it down to that gear there's a chance there's more in other parts of the lens, and you wouldn't want it to cause issues with your cameras AF motor if it's starts to jam again.

If you notice it sticking again you might want to proactively take it apart again to get any other bits of sand out. Regardless, you should feel proud of what you already accomplished. That's far beyond what most people feel comfortable doing. [emoji3]

Major problem with K-70

Hi, I'm very sorry you are having a problem with your Pentax. Was Amazon the supplier or was it actually supplied by another company through Amazon? Mine was supplied by Adorama and they only have a one-month return policy which is awful. Have you called Amazon to see if you could return it to them if they were the actual supplier? Precision did fix the camera and it has been working fine ever since. However, I have seen a ton of bad reviews about Precision on Facebook. About a month ago I was careless and didn't push camera and lens completely together when putting on a lens and my camera and lens got stuck together. I managed to get an e-mail for Precision through Ricoh and sent them an e-mail, but it took them about two weeks to get back to me. In the meantime I contacted another company, Advance Camera in Portland Oregon who got back to me right away. I sent the camera to them overnight (even though it cost me a bundle to do so) and they had the camera fixed and on its way back to me before Precision returned my e-mail. Repair | Advance Camera Inc.

If you really want to contact Precision, the only email I have is info@precisioncamera.com. Their web site is:

Contact Us | Precision Camera

but I would strongly suggest Advance Camera instead.

I hope you get it fixed quickly. Joyce Keay

Major problem with K-70

This is an update to my original post. Last Sunday I called Amazon to explain the problem I have been having with the camera and to ask for a replacement. They said that because it actually came from another seller (Adorama) I would have to ask them. I e-mailed them and they said because I've had the camera for more than 30 days they could not take it back. So I called Amazon back and told them. They gave me the phone number of the outfit with whom I have the 3- or 4-year protection plan who said during the first year it is under the manufacturer's warranty. I tried to call Pentax but couldn't get past their main phone menu (when I hit 2 for repair, it bounced me back to the main menu). Finally I hit 0 and got a live person. I explained the situation and she gave me the number of Precision Camera which, she said, is the only authorized Pentax repair facility in the USA. I called and waited through several cycles of "your call is important to us" then the recording switched to "We can't take your call now. Please leave a message." which I did leaving my land line. I also left a detailed message on their web site leaving my e-mail address. That was Wednesday and nobody has gotten back to me. I'm calling Amazon again tomorrow. They said last Sunday, basically, that if all else failed they would take care of me. Right now I am pretty unhappy with Pentax. Be very careful about buying anything expensive from Amazon that is actually being supplied by another company. You will be at the mercy of that company's return policy.

[cable release] - In case anyone was wondering about CS-310 working on K-S2

Previous models used a simple cable release system (identical with Canon EOS), and it was a easy to make your own. Mine had separate buttons for focus, shutter, and a third for timed exposures. A very handy setup.

Unfortunately the KS-2 appears to be the only model without the ability use a cable release. A very disappointing omission.

No problems but I haven't traveled this last year. The new scrutiny on personal electronics may put a real damper on things. I can see the concern about individual bins - the risk for theft and damage goes up as well as the time required to disassemble the bag and then reassemble it.

You can use an IR remote, but it requires a small configuration change. In the "C1" custom menu edit "Bulb (B) Mode Options" to "Type 2". In this mode the first press of the shutter release (or remote) will open the shutter. A second press closes it.

based on the report of "horror stories" I started a thread about experiences going onto airplanes with cameras and gear

experiences traveling on airlines with cameras - PentaxForums.com

in it, this TSA policy was mentioned.

TSA Requires a Separate Screening of Cameras in Airports Now

" If you’re bringing a camera bag or case onto the plane to keep it with you, you’ll be required to pull the camera(s) out of the bag and place them inside a bin for X-ray screening while passing through the standard security lanes. The camera will need to have nothing above or below it, similar to how laptops have already been screened at airports for years now. . . .

There’s no change to what can be brought through checkpoints, so you’ll be able to still carry the same camera equipment onto your flight. Also, if you are enrolled in TSA’s PreCheck program, you won’t be required to remove cameras and other electronics from your bag. . . . "

I'm glad I'm in the TSA precheck program

how much gear are you talking about?

I have travelled in the US and internationally with a K 3 and K 5, d fa 150 - 450mm and other lenses and stuff carried on.

I used a Lowepro Flipside 400 AW, very tight but I got the stuff in

it certainly wasn't light to carry but I did get it to fit in the upper bins

in the US, I brought a carry on duffle + this item

over seas, where the baggage restrictions were different, I checked the carry on duffle and carried on the photo back pack

there are other similar back packs out there
