Pentax Aperture Block, Black Picture Problem Class Action Lawsuit

Do users here really want Pentax to be destroyed? The majority of the comments certainly come across like that.
I still have a k-30 and i don't recall any more than a couple dark-ish images.
This law suit suddenly comes up when the K-new is coming out. In no way that is a coincidence particularly during a pandemic and in the USA and directed at Ricoh USA. Just who are the people (in general) that are litigating this? Of all the possible brands they choose Pentax and for something as old as the K-30. It makes no sense especially with the lawyers fees. This sounds like a money grab and they aimed for a company that wouldn't have as much legal process funds to spend like Nikon, Canon or Sony would. Nikon never wanted to fix my original D850 IQ processing problem and that happened every time at 400 iso or higher. I got a refurbished one and it works fine and made a-lot more sense that any litigation. I also ended up with a decent ND filter in the process.

All this does have a familiar blind range attacks on the Nikon D750 vibe to it.

So long as they offer the option to disable to accelerator chip, i am happy. I wish my Nikon D850 had that option so that it could have gotten more accurate rendering instead of auto boosting at just under 400 iso whether you like it or not.

As an observation in general i have noticed that the camera companies are forcing MACROS. These are sets of settings where you can set only one feature in that particular set hinting at people that this is all that is required and making their camera locked in as idiot proof and no room to actually learn the skills. I like Pentax because they expect the user to change settings and not argue with the user and if you make a mistake you can actually learn from it.

I like the new DFA50. So much so that i have been trying to get another and it's still on back order. Considering i have come from being being an avid appreciator of Canon L-glass and Sigma Bigma lenses, i don't see the point of complaining about big and heavy. The DFA50 is nice and sharp with natural colours.

(Un)popular Opinion: Pentax AF Doesn't Suck

Even with the mirrorless cameras i have had and tested i still get better results including focus than what the camera does automatically so the EVF preview looses about 50% of it's value. Most automatic features in electronics are "best guess" and then it's more of a wild guess and even then they lack basic error handling that even a Commodore C-64 computer had.

My other recent posting of converting another person (or two) to Pentax the person was using a Sony A6000 but they couldn't get over how much better my KP was and went to and bought one a few days later. If he needs an evf there is nothing preventing him from using mirror up mode with the rear lcd (live view). You can buy or make cowls for the rear LCDs of cameras that make them into a kind of eye level evf. It's a bit more bulky but it works.

(Un)popular Opinion: Pentax AF Doesn't Suck

One recurring observation is the fact that all the gear debates have one thing in common and that is lazyness as far as common terms go. They always want the cameras to do everything for them and not require any skill and when things go wrong which they do every single day they can't handle the hardships. Same goes for social media they are always in some ideal spot and if a bit of water splashes on the camera or everything isn't perfect they have a hissy fit in all manner of shape and form. The other side to that is the insulting tests they try to pass as proof. Just going out my front door in winter is far worse than any freeze test those youtubers come up with. It's true that Pentax actually expects you to know how to use a camera, so does Sigma and i'm fine with that. Even at my age i still lay on my chest to get a low angle shot. I still hang off the side of a cliff with a safety rope to get the shot, granted theses days drones are a bit easier except they don't have Pentax K-1 or Nikon D850 cameras attached. I'm still using a K200d almost daily, it takes very nice images for a 10mpx CCD sensor camera. The K200d BW images are especially nice and the fact that i have three K200d's says a-lot. People just love the images from that decade old camera. Also a some what popular trend with at least one Fujifilm camera of removing the colour filters form the sensor to give it only BW capability, bringing old tech back.

This is not meant to offend any one.

True. I've noticed in at least one of Northrups recent videos that he didn't even know the name of the Pentax mount (K-mount), no prepared notes to read from and yet you can see him looking at notes form time to time in the video for every other subject. He struggled for several seconds to remember or look for the Pentax mount name/designation and still didn't get it and jumped immediately to condemning Pentax in order to cover his ineptitude.
He does the same for Sigma Foveon cameras.

As for Northrups view of the K-1 he's bounced back and forth so many times that not even he knows where he's going. My main problem with so called sources like him is when people quote him and then ask me about it and i have to waste my time having to research it when i know it's not true. For a long time now i just ask where they got their info and if it's a social media celeb i just tell them to stop bothering me.

Northrup is more about social media content creation and profit rather than photography. Also his so called skills about being a Microsoft windows software tech is insulting.

Last weekend i was out with a couple other photographers and it was a decent couple days. I had my KP, one had their Fujifilm X-T2 and other had a Sony A6000. Getting to the point we exchanged cameras throughout the weekend and got in a few hundred keepers in all. On Wednesday the A6000 person came by to show me their new camera and you can imagine i was expecting a new New X-T30, or X-T3, or an A6400 but no it was a KP with the 16-85mm HD. The X-T2 person is still on the fence due to the number of fujifilm lenses they have but they are slowly inching towards a new KP from the sounds of it.

Despite the infamous Pentax AF the KP AF did lock on better than the other two cameras when conditions were not so perfect. They also couldn't not get over the better over all IQ from the KP. They also didn't know about the Pentax 5-axis ibis that doesn't need any lens syncing even for old m42 mount lenses. The KP isn't large for a dslr either.

I'm not pride full but this did make me feel good and still having a bit of trouble accepting it considering the amount of hate Pentax gets and how jaded it makes you.

DP Review puts K-1 Mark II as second worst camera of 2018

True. There is also the fact that after their (TCSTV) original K-3 review they started really pounding on Pentax. The Pentax K-30 got one of the best TCSTV ratings and even promoted it over Sony.

I have been to the TCS store a few times over the years and the store is known for good service but their distane for Pentax was progressively evident over the years. The Pentax displays moved around and into more obscure locations you wouldn't normally look for a camera. Also something not so good happened between TCS and Sigma when it comes to the cameras to the point that Sigma would no longer send TCS any test units.

No problem with Henry's, Vistek, or Lens & Shutter stores. They went out of their way to supply me Pentax and Sigma gear and usually at a better price and service.

Something happened between Pentax and TCS just after the original K-3 review and the fact that Jordan was the only one that liked the K-1 and it's not a video centric camera (head scratch?).

One thing that did occur to me this that TCS probably made less money from selling more reliable and useful Pentax products and they are all about their "Public Image" and they need a villain to fight against and guess who became the scape goat?

K3ii replacement

So far the fujifilm X-T3 is good and the AF works quite well. It still does not resolve images as well as the KP/K-3 particularly in the shadow to mid range details. The X-T3 images are better than the X-T2 but they are still rather flat. I did the spruce tree test to see how much detail the cameras could pick up deeper into the tree and the KP/K-3 are way ahead. As for portraits in decent light the X-T3 does better at details like hair and not having as much of that waxy like detail fill between the hairs. The down side is that tone is sacrificed and you can bring it back in post but it looks somewhat artificial.
Will be sticking with Pentax for a while longer.

Umm. Yay!

The idea of the 24mpx mid range full frame market has been a void for quite some time. With recent flops by Nikon and Canon mirrorless and no D750 replacement Sony had almost no resistance against its A73. As much as i dislike Sony you have to admit they didn't miss the mark. All be it any one not noticing that particular void in the camera market would have to be blind or ignorant.

I wouldn't be against a 24mpx full frame mid range Pentax dslr

However a true multipurpose aps-c dslr such as a K-3ii successor is sorely needed.

The X-T3 is very tempting indeed.

I have been watching the Nikon, Canon and Sony mirrorless news lately. I've also been watching the number of pre-order claims and retractions. There is a rather large number of people canceling their new mirrorless pre-orders and picking up either NIB or used dslrs from Canon or Nikon. There has been an increase in Pentax sales however that would depend on the region.

There is also the vague rumor of Panasonic getting into the full frame market. Lately there has been an inordinate number of rather failed attempts at mirrorless full frame. Although there should not be so many deficiencies and requirements right off the bat. The add on cost for flimsy new mount type lenses, costly lenses that force a person to go third party, and not so low cost adapters. All in all at least for Nikon and Canon such weak attempts seem more like protecting their dslr line which is not a bad thing however it's a monumental waste of resources trying to save face and or attempt to appear futurist.

If Pentax has something interesting, useful and reliable to unveil then so much the better.

This is not in the least bit surprising. A local camera shop has a sign above the cashier listing the camera review sites and youtube channels to avoid because they are causing no end of trouble and DPR is one of them. You often see people come in and try a camera they seen on these sites and it's completely different.

The new 50mm f1.4 is not light (in weight) but it is not that bad. Its very sharp and nice colour rendition, no regrets.

Not all cameras encode raw or jpeg the same way either. Same goes for the editing software that is loading them.

I wish manufacturers would listen and offer "PNG" format. (It's not a typo).

Pentax K-1ii VS Sony A7iii (Am I switching to the dark side?)
Posted By solitudebound

KevinMoss. I would also suggest you factor in the Sony lens cost. The fact of the matter is that the A7iii to get what it promises you need the more costly Gmaster lenes and not all are good either. I rented my A7iii and it's a good camera for some things like the AF but it's not good for long distance subject even with telephoto lenses and landscapes are very flat compared to Pentax or Nikon. If i were offered to trade in it would go for a Nikon D750 instead but since i already have two. There just wasn't enough offered as being over all better with the A7iii except a little better noise control.

Pentax cameras have more realistic output. Asking people in general their opinions on photos they preferred the K-1 over the Nikon D850. It's why my D850 went back.

When you tell a Pentax camera what to do it does it, the exception being the AF but every one knows that. However i MF fine tune so i don't see a problem.

Lastly where you are in the world will make a difference. For most of Canada there is no Sony support and it's costly to own a Sony camera except for their camcorders. As they like to claim on youtube Sony's ecosystem is very market size dependent.

I would hang onto Pentax for a while longer and if you want to switch You might want to look at either Nikon or Fuji if the "support system" is of any value to you. Which also includes access to more new and used lenses.

Oh yes Sony a7iii is not an all weather camera particularly when it comes to the cold.

To me at least compared to my K-1 and Nikon D750 the Sony A7iii sacrifices too much including their odd idea of using a single (horizontal) plane AA filter. Perhaps they were betting on a 50/50 chance of making things worse.

Hi.

Sold off my KP and got a new K-3 , i also bought a second K-1 from a person buying into Fujifilm, a little over 5000 shutter count so it's basically new.

Decided not to wait on the K-3 mark iii and the Canon 7D mark iii apparently been pushed back. So that's it for buying cameras quite some time, the 50 & 85mm primes are still on my list though.

Latest Pentax patent for a "Tilting Sensor"
Posted By solitudebound
Replies: 78
Steve the tilt design does come across as something somewhat similar to the curved sensors that are currently being debated all be it you need special lenses for curved sensors. The tilt might be an aid for AF but Pentax Prime processor is already taxed enough as it is without adding another feature and Pentax really does need to stop avoiding their AF problems. Landscapes and portraits i don't really need AF but better DOF oh yes indeed.

I hope the tilt is not like Canon's pixel priority option where you can select which persons eye will be in focus. The difference is so minimal that it's a feature that seems useless.
