Thinking about getting an Internet radio

I’d originally thought to buy a DAB radio when our old AM/FM unit gave up the ghost, so, while I was searching around and discovering all sorts of options, I simply hooked up my phone/tablet to an existing small-but-not-tiny JBL bluetooth sound unit, which did the job well, without adding to our hardware load, and which provided better audio than many of the less-exotic dedicated units (I’d been seriously considering the Bose unit up until then). Then, after some house renovations that required dismantling all my audio equipment, while re-establishing our Sonos system, I discovered the vast spectrum of internet streaming “radio” stations available via the software. So, the only dedicated DAB+FM/AM units we now have are in our motorcars. A case, you might say, of less is more. ;)

My only older Pentax zoom lenses are the A24-50/4, A35-105/3.5 and M40-80/2.8-4. All still function as new (I think – only the 40–80 was bought new by me), certainly without the problems described. All yield good results on my Pentax DSLRs. Maybe the OP has just had bad luck with purchasing some of the older lenses. Not everyone looks after their gear as they should.

Next time I’m in the UK, I must find out where you can still get good fish and chips. My last few visits saw plenty of curry houses and the like, but fish and chip shops, which used to be the overwhelming majority of take-away in Britain, were nowhere to be found. Clearly, they’ve become only for the elite few! :D

Thanks for the tip about Lundy Island, which I’d not heard of previously, but about which a quick search revealed an interesting history. I’ll make a mental note on a piece of paper (as Spike Milligan might have said) to check it out when I’m next in the UK.

Streaming video (and audio) is just the latest means by which money is wheedled from us by those who seek profit from our collective lack of imagination. Here in Oz, I tend to listen to the free-to-air ABC radio (the local equivalent of the BBC service) for much the same reason as you, but also because it has the widest range of useful topics of all the broadcasters, and likewise for its TV service. We also enjoy a semi-government broadcaster in the SBS (set up initially to serve the many ESL migrant communities here) which plays a lot of non-English-speaking programs (with locally-produced English language subtitles) that beat the pants off many Anglophone productions from the more conventional sources. Needless to say, both are disparaged by the major commercial media companies owned by a (deliberately unnamed) expatriate Australian, who would much prefer his world view to dominate the minds and pockets of Australians.

I know it’s become a trope among some younger Anglophone generations to blame the ills of the world on those born in the post-WW2 baby boom, and they have some justification in particular areas, but when I look at the lives of my former schoolmates, I don’t see rampant greed or mindless consumerism among many of them. Rather, we tend toward conservatism in spending our money, particularly those born in the immediate post-war years, when the exigencies of war and the habits of the previous frugal generations were still at the forefront of thinking in our early lives. Mend and make-do is something I still practice, even though I spent my working life in the financial comfort provided by an active profession of engineering, sometimes to the frustration of my lovely wife. Again, it’s a trope, but I’m frequently appalled by the spendthrift attitude of some people not born into that way of thinking.

What to do about it for ourselves and, more importantly for future generations, is the thing that should be exercising our minds. As I inferred above, the widespread lack of imagination is, I think, the source (or maybe, more appropriately, the sink) of our gargantuan consumerist tendencies. Money and material possessions will continue to be the ultimately joyless goals of the majority until enough people are equipped with a few simple ideals and tools for thinking about what really affects their lives and states of contentment. I’m told that critical thinking is now being taught in schools here, and it couldn’t come at a better time, but it needs more than that, and that’s an area that is broader than this little thread can deal with at one time.

Welcome to Pentax Forums from Australia. Interesting comments of yours on things missing from the contemporary camera world, which I’m sure many of us can relate to from our past experience, and which I think many younger people are discovering independently, particularly with the revival of film.

Have fun with your K-3iii Monochrome. I hope it keeps bringing back some of the fun for you.

In the hands of a user, from the photo, it looks very delicate, something I never found with my Q. I was forever frustrated by the lack of an EVF for it, though. I know there were some users who didn’t find that to be a problem, but I suspect most of them weren’t attempting to use it in anything like the harsh Australian sunlight.

I agree. The Instax market, as far as I have seen is for casual shooters (of all ages, I was surprised to discover recently) who like the immediacy of a printed aide-memoir or validation of the moment, rather than passing around a phone full of other distractions.

I think a 35mm half-frame film camera is for the (slightly) more serious film photographer, who wants something easily pocketable (in smaller than cargo pants). I don’t have any worries about the adequacy of the half-frame format, after a short trip around the Flickr group.

Neither am I concerned about the zone-focussing lens, which served me well enough with my little (albeit full-frame) Minox 35. Anything that can encourage enlarging the attention-span of screen-addicted younger humans has to be welcomed.

It’s an excellent lens, particularly if you want to get some close shots of detail, and there’s lots of that in Venice.

A lot depends on how long your stay is. You’ll find the wider focal lengths in use a lot of the time on your initial forays around the city, perhaps not so much if you travel to the outer islands, or even Lido. If you stay more than a few days, details will catch your attention that you may prefer to use a good (prime) lens on. I’ve been twice to Venice, and I’m sure I could happily spend more time there, though I’m not sure the locals would be as happy, these days.

The advice about getting up early is good. You’ll find the same about staying up later, too, though you may want a tripod or monopod for really good night shots, but you’ll have to carefully pick your spots to use either in some of the narrow walkways..

I find the smart-phone linking of the K-3iii to be so much of a fiddle, especially as it needs to be done every time, after I’ve turned off the camera while I’m walking, that I barely use it. It’d be different if I did astro-photography, but I don’t. Dropping GPS from the K-1 successor would be a big mistake IMO.

Additionally, I don’t think bigger is necessarily better, but brighter certainly is. I look through the viewfinder of my LX or K2DMD and compare it with that of my K-1, and the difference is stark.

I imagine it was only used as a small percentage of the total, possibly to provide strength. People were tinkering with aluminium alloys back then, in order to make raw aluminium more adaptable to different uses.

What problem can't be solved on EV ?

There’s a lot of rationalisation going on with opposition to EVs. However, as much as I love the exhaust note on my sporty French hatchback, I’m seriously considering an EV for my next motor vehicle (a French one, naturellement).

There are several things to say in relation to the frequent objections raised. Firstly, while opponents gleefully post videos of EV fires on social media, they conveniently ignore the proven fact (which you can also read about in car magazines!) that they catch fire less frequently than ICE vehicles, on a pro rata basis. As noted previously, though, those fires are harder to put out.

The matter of the source of energy can be an issue in some places, but even in the USA an increasing proportion of the electrical grid energy is produced by renewable source, even in Texas. Here, although our hydro-electric powered grid is tainted by connection to the Australian national grid, it’s much less so, even to zero when we are in export mode, and coal-fired generation is on the way out, albeit slowly while the old power stations steam along to their end-of-life points.

Charging point availability is an issue in many places (not Norway, I hear) but so was petrol in the early days, until distribution networks were developed. In my situation, a future EV will mostly be charged from our rooftop solar PV, but we’ll keep an ICE car for long journeys because of the early-stage charging network we have at present. On a side note, clueless EV enthusiasts who babble on about on-car solar charging don’t have a realistic grip on the situation – I’ve given up pointing out that you get around 700 Watts per square metre falling on a solar panel, at best, and even doubling current PV efficiencies means that a practical vehicle is going to be sitting in the sun for a very long time to get any range from that source. Simple mathematics is a lost cause for some people.

Weight is a problem, though. The only positive that comes from it is that the batteries are positioned low in the vehicle, making for a low centre of mass, with associated benefits for roadholding, while you have control of the situation, of course. When you compare sheer mass and its centre, though, the laws of physics mean that you’re probably better off in a tricky situation than, say, in a massive top-heavy vehicle like a RAM, especially one with a jacked-up suspension. Dunderheads, nonetheless, think they can defy the laws of physics, assuming they even know about them in the first place.

The increased weight does mean you need special tyres and you’re going to have to change them more often, which not only means more waste disposal (governments have to get serious about that anyway), but more micro-plastics entering the waterways from tyre-wear particles.

Hydrogen, as much as I like the idea, is probably only going to be viable for long-distance heavy transport. Liquid hydrogen is too difficult to store in a regular motor car, because of the need to maintain it at near absolute zero temperature. Compounding it in a substance like ammonia is a better method, but that has its own toxic problems (which is why it rapidly fell from use as a refrigerant when fluorocarbons were developed).

Overall, though, synthetic petroleum fuels should hold out hope for the ICE enthusiasts. A completely renewable-sourced plant in Chile is already turning out liquid fuel for Porsche’s future racing program. So classic car owners should not despair, me included.

Coincidentally, I’ve recently taken my 50-135 out of hibernation, and been enjoying its IQ, but not so much its slow focussing. I hadn’t previously considered converting it to screw drive, as the SDM still works (after a little encouragement), but I found the converted 16-50 focusses very quickly on the K-3iii. Have you found the same for your converted 50-135, Sandy?

Ads?? Do you ever take notice?

Advertisements are the price we pay for viewing unsubsidised media. Fortunately, in Australia we have the taxpayer-funded ABC which, like the UK’s BBC is constantly being sniped at by Mr Murdoch’s paid lackeys, but which still manages to occasionally air some worthwhile content (thanks to Messrs Attenborough and Cox, mostly, but others as well).

Having a retirement income tends to make one largely resistant to most advertising, but when so many people claim “immunity” from them it makes me wonder why they bother. Well, I don’t wonder at all. We have a TV series originally called The Gruen Transfer (after an Austrian architect who called out the sly methods used in shopping malls and stores) that exposes the various tricks and techniques that marketers use to lure customers to their products. It features people who work in the industry and is quite popular with those who aren’t mesmerised by the banal “reality” and outrage offerings on other media.

However, if there’s one type of advert that I find objectionable, it’s the one that features fake celebrity “blunders” and police arrests to lure the unwary or the sad individuals who find fascination with the lurid and ludicrous into their totally unrelated snare, and which website owners seem to think is acceptable because they keep appearing, repeatedly.

More insidious than the advertisers, though, are the “influencers” –*mostly telegenic know-nothings who are willing to prostitute themselves for an easy dollar, because they’re incapable of honest work. Not that I wish them harm – more a case of pity for them and the gullible people who follow them.

Leica’s sales of their M6 increased by a factor of 10, year on year, after they updated it. Admittedly, it was from a base of 500, but that was enough to reinvigorate their interest in maintaining film camera production. At more than $5,000US for the body, I think that probably takes care of the rich London hipsters.

I’m fairly sure that the Pentax offerings will be a success for them, simply because I see lots of enthusiasm for film, and just about any analogue devices in this digitally-saturated world, come to that. This first offering could well be akin to Fujifilm’s introduction of their 100 series – limited, but sufficiently attractive as an alternative to a much higher-priced Leica viewfinder digital – and, if not quite that for the first, then maybe the second.

Subject is mentioned at the start of the article, but it then moves on to discuss the various elements as they relate to the theory. It isn’t simply about subject, unless by “subject” we mean the entirety of the photo, which is the point of applying the theory, after all.

Nonetheless, if you expect complexity and subtlety in an online article about anything, you’re bound to be disappointed. Further reading is always encouraged.
