Springtime in the foothills of the Colorado Rockies. To ME that means it's time for Macro's. Broke out my 1980's vintage Deitz 28mm Macro Manual Focus, (pin removed to go on and off of my modern K mounts without jamming), and stepped outside into the blowing snow on APR 10. to shoot Iced Blooms and Buds! Did some post work on this one in Skylum's Luminar 3. Hope you enjoy looking at it as much as I did making it!

This is a 10 frame HDR pano. five brackets on the left, five on the right, knitted in the middle. ISO was constant at 200, shutter speed varied for bracket values. This old Ranch, last occupied int he 1950's, is on the Federal Reservation that was previously the Department of Defense cum Department of Energy cum Environmental Protection Agency Superfund cleanup site; the "Rocky Flats" Nuclear Weapon Trigger Manufacturing Facility in Northwestern Jefferson County, Colorado, USA. This image was captured in October of 2018. In the distance, is a new Department of Energy facility, the National Wind Energy Center division of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory located in Colorado. The deeds of progress on display.

This UP main line and siding are near my house. Looking west, you can make out the permanently abandoned cut of cars that form a wind break for the "Big Ten" curve on the way to the Moffat Tunnel. If you ride the Amtrak Zephyr through Colorado, you'll ride this rail.

A very sunny mid November day in Colorado in 2015. Among my very first DSLR images on my first DSLR camera, but not my first Pentax. Still have my old Asahi K1000, and some undeveloped film. A lot of light, not many shadows, but that Blue Dry Colorado Sky of mid November reflected in this small pond made me stop my truck, on my journey to another shoot, and take a few moments to try my hand, I'm still glad I did. The RAW file is lost to time and lack of skill, but this little old .jpg is still a sentimental favorite of mine. This is in Jefferson County, CO which has a County wide property tax assessment to purchase and set aside land as near wild parks, most of them along watercourses. This is part of a a small one and it was actually donated by what was then called Johns-Manville cum Martin Marietta, now Lockheed Martin because when they built their nearby facility years ago, it disrupted a, (what was at the time a protected species), Bald Eagle nesting area, and the park was payment in kind, but the Bald Eagles a still long gone from here Likely due more to the houses and roads than the factory, but they all go hand in hand over time. It is juxtaposed next to a what is now a very large aerospace engineering and manufacturing center they have near here. Nice place for a walk/bike ride at lunch if one is employed there and so inclined.

I have located an old 2x teleconverter (no brand marking on it),I used on my k1000 35mm film body, back in the day, (which I still have), it accepts my ol KR lenses, where my K1 will not, due to the extra pin, but that's okay, I don't want to use the old Dietz 28 or the Vivitar 70-300 directly on my K1 w/o the teleconverter, which DOES fit nicely on my K1-no issues, (okay,...it won't pass autofocus drive signals, but it does pass acquired focus signal, and that's good enough for me, vs. buying a longer lens than my Sigma 400). But when I pair the tele-converter with my Tamron 70-300mm or my Sigma 400mm, or even the old Dietz 26 the K1 wants me to input a beginning focal length and I am not sure what to put in, especially on the 70-300, or any other telephoto for that matter? The K1 always wants to know the focal length on my Rokinon 14mm prime wide angle too, (manual focus), but it doesn't have a 14mm choice to select, but that's a different question..
(1) - So my question is 3 part, do I calculate the focal length to input to the K1 applying the magnification factor of the tele-converter?
(2) - Do I set the focal length selection for the K1 to the minimum focal length or the longer for a telephoto lens, (whether or not I calculate 2x magnification)?
(3) - Do I have to select theses focal length baselines EVERY time I mount the lens and turn the camera on, or can I teach my camera my lenses are part of it's family and it should recognize them going forward?
Secondarily, is there a fix for the KR mount lenses extra pin problem? I can usually get them off because the extra pin is spring loaded, but I have to apply an uncomfortable amount of force to do so and I don't want to damage my K1. Photos of the teleconverter are below.

On a tourist train excursion from the small historical mining town of Silverton, CO to Durango CO on the aptly named Durango & Silverton Narrow Guage. The journey follow the Animas River for it's entire length. Sometime near it's level, sometimes far above the river. In this shot the old steam engine is pausing to take on water before a long climb up a grade. Weather was a bit misty and drizzly, but that bothered the K50 and the 18-55 not at all, at all. It's worth the time to ride if you find yourself in this part of the world. It is, aside from some very serious floating/canoeing/kayaking or hiking / mountaineering, the only way to see much of this part of of the Animas river valley and Colorado and a fabulously scenic and photogenic trip.

Thom Langley. Self taught amateur, slowly improving. Pentax user all my life, since High School photo class. Current body, Pentax K50, two kit lenses 18-55 and 50-200. One Pentax prime DA14mm, one Tamaron 150-300 Macro focusing telephoto. Drawn to outdoor photos primarily. Landscapes, wildlife, flowers, trees. Becoming interested in upgrading to full frame and am very interested in the K1. Not certain of compatible lens availability that takes advantage of the full size sensor as yet though. Would be interested in hearing opinions and POV's on that.
