Is it worthy buying the K-1 II having already the K-1?

reh31: I take the typical type of picture rail buffs take. The pictures I take typically roster shots, but I also take scenic train pictures in remote hard to reach areas, where I have to us my kayak. I have had issues when a train pulls into the yard and is slowing down. I tend to take most of my pictures however, in an area south of Duluth Junction in Fort Frances, where they don't go all that fast. I still get the odd picture the is slightly out of focus when I take pictures in that area, but that has to do with me and not the camera. I find it focuses pretty good when trains are going around 50mph, but still get the odd out of focus picture, possibly because a train was changing speed. I now focus the camera on spots before I take the picture, and that seems to have helped a lot. I also turned off the shake reduction, and that seems to have made a difference. The shutter speed I use is 1/500.

The CameraVille image quality comparison K-1 vs K-1 MKII

Its still not enough improvement for me. A touch of PP and the K-1 pictures can look just as saturated at the K-1ii. I am more than happy with the colour of the K-1. I doubt the average person (not talking about an avid photographer) could tell the difference between a lot of K-1 and K-1ii pictures unless they were placed side by side, and then its still subjective.

I hope they keep the function dial on future full frame models, and also all the user settings. I like the mechanical feel of the K-1. It feels to me at least, more like a 35mm camera than a digital camera, because of the dials. The previous cameras I have owned didn't feel that way. The local surgeon in town also takes train pictures. He uses a Canon D5 mark. I feel its not as versatile or user friendly as the K-1, so I hope Pentax keeps all the dials on their future full frame cameras.

why shoot with Pentax?

Like others have said, Pentax offers excellent quality for very good prices. I purchased three Pentax zooms (two are in the $2,000 dollar range, but they are excellent and would cost much more if they were Canon or Nikon. Pentax cameras are probably the most weather resistant camera out there and the same can be said for their more expensive lenses. If you decide to go for the K-1 it is the most customizable camera that is available, and the control dials allow you to turn on or off various features without having to scroll through a menu. I have not seen such ease of operation with cameras from manufacturers.

Why I have decided not to upgrade.

I don't go hog wild when taking pictures, so the K-1 will last a long time for me. I want to purchase the next full frame Pentax camera, keep the K-1 and just have different lenses on the cameras, that way I won't be switching out lenses. Perhaps there will be a brand new model or a new K-1 model that has more dramatic improvements over the first K-1. The K-1 Mk II while improved, still doesn't have what I would call significant improvements that would justify the expense.

Why I have decided not to upgrade.

I was seriously thinking about upgrading, but decided against it.

1. The camera will still be a first generation full frame for Pentax, so even with the improvements it is still a K-1. It will still have 33 focus points.

2. I shoot at ISO 100 more than 99 percent of the time. I have only changed the ISO for about 6 pictures out of the 1,600 or so that I have shot, so the extremely high ISO is not a selling point for me. I will keep using 100 ISO for my railway, truck and landscape photography. I was happy with Kodachrome 64 when I used my LX so if 64 was good for all the years I used SLR's then ISO 100 fine for me now.

3. The cost. It will cost me around $820 CDN once the tax and shipping is factored in, so it means I am paying one third more than the price of a new mark ii. I feel I would rather save that money for a second generation Pentax full frame camera. We don't know how much a second generation camera will cost, but being retired I feel its best for me to try to save as much as I can for the next generation full frame camera.

4. The inconvenience. The upgrade window is at the wrong time of the year.

5. The find the K-1 focus acquisition is faster in the warmer weather. I have not had any focus issues since the temperatures have become warmer. I am going to try to make some kind of a cover for the winter that will cover both the camera and lens, and more than likely design it so I can use a chemical hand warmer with it.

6. I am more than satisfied with the colour. I find that many of my RAW pictures need little to no adjustment. I like the Pentax RAW files better than the Nikon RAW files. I had to do so much adjustment with my Nikon RAW files that I always shot RAW and JPG, and just used the JPG when I shared or printed pictures. I only shoot RAW with the K-1, and am extremely satisfied with the quality.
