I now have on order the HD 20-40mm. $$ My son's college education does not resume for a couple of months. I will figure out something regarding that by then. $$

Though I started this thread asking opinion regarding primes 21mm vs 35mm on an APS-C and ended up with the 20-40 zoom, I still am a prime fan and will likely add more primes in the future. I shoot almost always outdoors, so the direction of some contributors toward the light/compact (for a zoom) 20-40 makes sense.

If one uses the provided hood for a DA 20 - 40, is there an alternative lens cap that one can use? It appears that the lens cover is an external friction fit from what I can tell. Other options?

Darn you all for giving me one more lens the think about! The 20-40 mm.

I now am figuring out how to afford it if I go in that direction. Skip my life sustaining medications? My son's college education is way overrated. Do we really need 2 cars in the Midwest, or can I ride my bike to work year round, as it only hits -20 degrees F for a few weeks?

Seriously, functionally the only negative for me would be the loss of the smaller size of, say, the 21mm. It is somewhat lighter than the 55-300 that I typically carry along. Also, as pointed out by others, it covers 2 lens' that I was considering, the 21 or the 35. I originally intended to go primes only. :-( My collection would then be my current DA 15mm F4; the possible DA 20-40mm F2.8-4 Limited; and my current DA 55-300mm F4.5-6.3 ED PLM WR RE. The coverage makes sense.

The thoughts to date are exactly what I wanted. ...still can't decide, but more directions to consider.

Several have recommended adding the 20-40 2.8 Zoom to my options, in addition to my original considerations of the 21 and the 35 prime. I agree, the 20-40 would cover both and be weather resistant, matching my K-70. With the 20-40, though yet fairly compact, would take away the lovely of seemingly 'nothingness' on my camera with the 21mm lens at only 1 inch in length and 4 ounces. ...also, there is that price thing to consider with the 20-40.

Thank you to all for your input to date. This forum has allowed me to make good calculated choices on my Pentax photo purchases to in the past.

HD Pentax-DA 21mm F3.2 Limited ..or..
HD Pentax-DA 35mm F2.8 Limited Macro

I currently have 15 mm Prime and Pentax 55 to 300 Zoom. I would like an in-between walk around/hiking lens. I am considering one of the two above. Size matters, and both of these particular lenses are nicely compact.

I know I am going to be lectured about the subjectivity of my question. Well, that is what I am asking for. Opinions, thoughts. There is no right or wrong.

Also, do I need the macro of the 35 mm? Or would close-ups for flowers and some insects be adequate with just a regular lens?

I am confused on the filter options for this lens. Am I reading correctly that I can use either a 49mm on the lens, or a 43mm filter placed somehow on the lens hood?

So far, I have seen vague references to the hood option in descriptions.

Further explanation by those that have this lens would be appreciated.

I don't think it is so much contact while shooting, but more so when I am bringing the camera up from it's hanging position where I have more of a gross grip with my right hand.

I may look at the focus point option suggested. This may be equally frustrating though due to inadvertent change of this feature.

Is there a way to deactivate the rear 'drive mode' button, and only access this feature through the menu?

I ask this as I am finding I am constantly unintentionally changing the drive mode setting (changing from single shot to multi, or to timer) be cause of unknowingly pressing it with the base of my thumb. I nearly always shoot single shot and see no need to quickly access the drive features. I am finding I am missing shots, or irritating family members because my K70 fails the moment only to find I have accidentally set it to timer or some other incorrect drive setting.

Solutions...other than a surgical procedure for my right hand?

I just received my replacement 55-300mm F4.5-6.3 ED PLM today. So far it seems to be working flawlessly.

I also tried it for some close-up work. I really think it will do all that I currently need. Considering this, I did just packaged to send back my 100 macro. I know everyone would tell me to keep both but financially I must wait/conserve... sailboat in my future?

I thank everyone for their input. I wish I would have read the suggestions for checking the rear of the 55-300mm F4.5-6.3 ED PLM earlier. I likely would not have needed to send back the first one.

I have a new copy of HD Pentax-DA 55-300mm F4.5-6.3 ED PLM WR RE lens coming, hopefully arriving Saturday.

If this new copy of the 55-300 mm zoom works well with my k70, carrying it with my Pentax 100 Macro and small primes will be quite a physical burden. Or, maybe I just get that sailboat to transport my gear.

Unrelated question, which I can pose in a new thread if needed: Does the 55 - 300 PLM have any decent macro/close up capability?

I purchased a HD Pentax-DA 55-300mm F4.5-6.3 ED PLM WR RE for my K70. K70 firmware 1.11

The lens seldom focused. Very infrequently it would focus but would then return to a rather dead state. My prime 15, 40 and 100 macro all work fine.

I did return it however wanted to add this versatility to my primes.

Bad copy? Other suggestions? Should I just be happy with a 100 mm max telephoto and let it go? :(

Not an option with an Optical Viewfinder. ...a welcome sacrifice as I love the pentaprism finder on the K70.

DA 15mm polarizing filter

I'd say inflate it to three cents worth, as I was also thinking that perhaps I should simply get more mileage on this new lens without a filter to see how it does before I invest in a new better fitting polarizer.

But I do have a 40mm DA and plan to invest also in the Pentax 100 macro. All of which take the same filter size.

I purchased a polarizing filter for my DA 15mm lens. Unfortunately the lens filter that I purchased does not allow me to extend the built-in hood on the lens. Question: Is there a reasonably priced polarizing filter that would work with this lens and yet be narrow enough to allow use of the hood?

I kept the camera in my coat when hiking for any distance to get to frozen waterfalls, so the camera was never external around my neck, in a fanny or backpack. So I cannot truely say the batteries were overly challenged by the cold temps. ...my fingertips were when shooting however.

I looks like whafrog has a better opinion on the cold affect on battery duration.
