21 mm or 35 mm 'walk around' on aps-c???

I now have on order the HD 20-40mm. $$ My son's college education does not resume for a couple of months. I will figure out something regarding that by then. $$

Though I started this thread asking opinion regarding primes 21mm vs 35mm on an APS-C and ended up with the 20-40 zoom, I still am a prime fan and will likely add more primes in the future. I shoot almost always outdoors, so the direction of some contributors toward the light/compact (for a zoom) 20-40 makes sense.

K-70 Drive Mode Button

Is there a way to deactivate the rear 'drive mode' button, and only access this feature through the menu?

I ask this as I am finding I am constantly unintentionally changing the drive mode setting (changing from single shot to multi, or to timer) be cause of unknowingly pressing it with the base of my thumb. I nearly always shoot single shot and see no need to quickly access the drive features. I am finding I am missing shots, or irritating family members because my K70 fails the moment only to find I have accidentally set it to timer or some other incorrect drive setting.

Solutions...other than a surgical procedure for my right hand?

I just received my replacement 55-300mm F4.5-6.3 ED PLM today. So far it seems to be working flawlessly.

I also tried it for some close-up work. I really think it will do all that I currently need. Considering this, I did just packaged to send back my 100 macro. I know everyone would tell me to keep both but financially I must wait/conserve... sailboat in my future?

I thank everyone for their input. I wish I would have read the suggestions for checking the rear of the 55-300mm F4.5-6.3 ED PLM earlier. I likely would not have needed to send back the first one.

Not an option with an Optical Viewfinder. ...a welcome sacrifice as I love the pentaprism finder on the K70.

Thank you. I will look again in the menu for the review setting.

K-70 First Use

My K-70 body was received in late December, with planned first real use the first week in January during a family trip on the North Shore of Lake Superior in Minnesota. Today was the first day the high temp reached above 0 degrees F. First day of use was near the Canadian border at 24 degrees below 0 F., without windchill factor. Though the K-70 was kept under my outer layer when hiking, it was out frequently. The K-70 performed flawlessly, faring much better than my fingers.

I used my DA 15mm almost exclusively mainly because it was too darn cold to switch to my DA 40mm! Seriously, I would have likely switched minimally anyway as the subject matter was scenery, usually frozen waterfalls and ice formations along Lake Superior.

The purpose of this post is to thank all on this forum that answered my many questions and provided pertinent opinions leading up to the purchase of my K-70 and 2 lenses.

I wish everyone a great 2018!

Sigma 17-50mm F2.8 EX DC HSM on K-70?

Good insight. I currently have a Pentax 40mm 2.8 prime. I am thinking that and possibly the 15mm would be a good beginning of rounding out my lens options. I am thinking that for my slow-paced photography habits switching from one Prime to another would not be a hassle. I may go with the 15mm + 40mm, and forego a zoom for now.

"It takes a ton of self-discipline to keep the DA 40 from leading you into a VERY expensive territory"

Q: How does one fund a lens habit such as this? A:...marriage and home ownership are overrated.

...yes. Before beginning a weekday/workday...unless everyone is independently wealthy or retired ...not me :-(

Of course, self-centered of me to think that the rest of the world lives by my time zone. :-)

I did peruse the resources on this site and did see the comparison article you mentioned. ...yet was unsure of green vs red 40, which in many replies, I now know. "thank you". I did just order the red (HD) version. Looking forward to trying it on the K70 body, which I anticipate getting next month.

On any of the choices (35mm da, green or red 40 or XS 40) I am not too concerned regarding the slower speed of 2.8 vs for instance the 1.8 50 as I shoot mostly outdoors/light.
