Thank you for the help understanding Raw files and how they work. I just pulled out an image from a back light photo whilst not as good as yours mine was a butcher bird on my flyscreen at the window. so raw is for bad photographers and jpeg for good photographers no wonder I have never needed raw skills before this.

When I shot with film before digital i simply used camera model then numbered the rolls of film and stored the packets of film negatives and photo's in recipe containers that I would pick up from opshops. the film envelopes fitted perfectly in them otherwise buy plastic containers. even ice cream containers would work and I would get 2 copies of every photo and one photo would go into albums of 300 photo's and again camera model and number eg MZ5n 73 then I would number photos in the album according to the number on the back of the photo 1-36 normally. I have photo's I took 25 years ago that I can put my hands straight on the negatives even back 43 years to our wedding. still in order.but need large shelving space for the albums. Never keep photo's that don't work out.

The MZ5n was my favourite except for the fact the shutter button was designed for small japanese fingers which meant for me every time I pressed the shutter button the camera would twist and the right side of my photo's would show camera shake. I had to stick leather on top of my shutter button to fix the problem then the camera was perfect.

I learn't somthing very importantant from this and that is the newest model is not necessarily the best camera. With the dropping of features and weather sealings to save costs or for what ever reason when you buy a camera you need to check the features on other models before accepting the salesmans word and parting with your money for the latest and greatest as it might not be the case. There is also no such thing as a cheaper model just a camera with less features. There is another thing I learn't (personal experience) if you like the way your camera works don't upgrade the firmware if you do it do it for a practical reason you can go up at any time but you cannot go back forever, the person who wrote the new firmware might live in a different enviroment to you so the new firmware may not cater for your enviroment eg you may live in the country and the firmware may have been written by a city dweller therefore no exposure to the scenery to get the firmware correct. Gave me a new perspective of the brand. I also had somthing I recently learnt, confirmed in the spotmatic section. ( does not mean it can't be done well but makes it easier) Now a tip if you want to use a spot meter best its used in manual mode when its needed this way your settings you selected remain when you move the camera about if you want the exposure fixed to somthing to the side of your frame etc.Exposure lock can also work sbut some cameras vary how the exposure lock works so its not guaranteed if your using a different camera.

The spotmatic 500 the notch at the 1000 shutter speed point does it work at 1000 or only at 500 as I have one?

Also pleased theSFXn got the review it deserved I used to use it with a 600mm lens for surfing shots so easy and comfortable a camera.

Ok guys I now have 11 digital cameras 6 Pentax and 6 canon (one broken canon 500D I bought for the accessories and lowepro case for $21.00). The canon have been recent additions to my collection. I recommend a mix of cameras as it has improved my knowledge of how my pentax work believe it or not. The canon I find good for the swamp out back saving my pentax cameras from exposure to the saltwater dirt and effluent that was dumped. So when my next new camera arrives I will go down and take the sunset photo's at F11 ISO 100 av setting. if you only have a 200 shutter speed I suggest you stop down to f13 that's one stop to give the same exposure equation. I'll be using ISO 400. i have Canon EOS 650D. K5, K5ii, canon 450D. The canon and Pentax cameras are so different the canon are simple and the Pentax are complexed in so many ways I always knew this but never realised the opposition were so basic. However the canon software I do like better than the Pentax its like comparing Firefox to Edge.I have used raw files for the first time as the Pentax software I had never worked properly for me. That was why I always used photo's in windows. I have also escaped the flash for indoor photo's now as the difference between the two brands has told me it's ok to do night photography without the flash and ise the iso 12800 there abouts as it's quiet sharp still there is also no issues with reflections from shiny objects and red eye. I was stuck in the 70's with flash photography. Last night I also realised the shadows on facial features are no longer required in fact they haven't been required for 80-90 years as the colour in a photo shows all the detail a shadow would with out ruining the photo with a shadow across half the face like the old black and white photo's. Just imagine in the old days if you set your flash up at 2.00 o'clock instead of 1 o'clock you'd run the risk of getting shot for creating the impression of a large nose on a persons face. PS it is great having a 18-400mm lense to go walk about now it is such a better range zoom lens, it Tamron won't make one for Pentaxians then mabye pentax should make one for Pentax cameras then you would have a camera that would leave the rest behind or even try for a 16-400mm now that would be a lens Pentax could sell so many of so easily. Think I am going to have to stop using the spot meter all the time as well as for hiking the average metering means less resetting of the camera every time you face a different direction. I'll just use the + - instead. Wish the pentax had the A-DEP mode as well as the AV TV etc.

Bottom photo is pretty good,So the sigma has a nice sensor the low battery may have effected the top photo the Nikon took. I love seeing a clear round sun in a shot the glow blobs I try to avoid. I got an adjustable ND filter which helps but can become too dark at times. I also forgot to specify the light meter setting use a spot meter and use the blue sky for a meter point if your camera is set so you can reposition shot keeping shutter button halfway down you will retain your meter reading, this will lighten up the photo's a fair bit. Bit like the last photo.

I still have my mothers box browning she gave me when I was ten. My Mother worked in a chemist in port Macquarie developing film in the very early 50's and I never found out she knew anything about photography until 1998 after I won some awards then she gave me some old processing books. So if you got your film developed in the 40's and 50's chances are my mother did them. Just now I get where this love of photography comes from. I still have all my cameras except my minolta x300 it broke and my x700 I gave to my father when his Canon T90 I gave him broke. I have about 6 k1000 some are brand new or one roll through them. k500, sfx, 2 mx-5's mzn, mz50 somewhere, me x2 me super, 3 isDt's, 2 k5's 2 k5ii, eos 450D x 2 sony Mavica basicly first or 2nd digital camera used a floppy disc in it, Prakita nova1, Samoca 35, Reninette kodak. Still works. Just found the Vivatar lens 28-200 that I won the awards I won years ago with didn't know I still had it. I have misplaced the special camera I has the lens had colapseable bellows that packed away very nicely bit of a mystery that one. The SFX pentax is the camera that most digital cameras base their shape on so far ahead of its time with the wide hand grip on the right side that most cameras have today where the batteries are stored.

NO any camera you have its all educational. I just picked up a rebel on eBay so I can have a go with it as well I did accidentally buy an EOS tamron lens by mistake a few years back so it will make a good swamp camera. Tuesday I'll have the nurse come in and I'll try to get some shots then.

Not of the Nurse, of a sunset the nurse helps with my wife she has dementia.

All camera's are not alike mostly due to the sensors used in the camera. I don't have many types of digital cameras, I have a ist D, K5, K5ii. These are the only digital cameras I have. I have discovered for my type of photography I love, the ist D is the better camera I discovered this when browsing my 2005 holiday shots the other night all shots were perfect even the sunrise and sunset photo's where the sun is clearly shown the reason for this is the istd has a D100 Nikon sensor yes the istd is a Nikon. My k5's are not so good when it comes to sunsets and sunrises except when the sun is down. So I am asking all of you to drag out your cameras digital only for some research shots. I unfortunately don't have credit to participate with photos but I do have some in a thread taken with the k5 and k5ii.

The idea is one shot per camera of sunsets or sunrise only no filters just av settings only and post your shot in this thread with the type of camera range of lens and aperture and shutter speed iso should be 100 to 800. this way we can all see which camera takes the clearest shot of the sun during sunset. most digital cameras are designed for snap shots around cities etc but only the best sensor will take a clear shot of the sun at sunset. I'm also not looking for dark yellowish shots from too small an aperture.

This isn't a competition for the best shot ok I set a benchmark f11 aperture AV mode iso 100. this way all shots will be equal. if you have to change the benchmark please use f16 aperture and specify aperture. The sun is to be 1" off the horizon. now lets see who has the best camera. If the f11 doesn't work re-shoot at what does, and record the info and display both shots. The purpose it 1, find best camera's for sun shots and 2 find the best sensor manufacturer.

This is not just a sunset thread its a test of sensor thread.

---------- Post added 01-15-22 at 05:55 PM ----------

K-30 has sony sensor (also used in nikon but nikon secret sause in on the nikon sensor) 645D has kodak sensor K5 has samsung sensor, istd has the nikon sensor hope you guys see where I'm going with this thread it will benifit us all, it's just like the day I took my film camera down to the sunset and took a whole large album of photo changing setting by one stop every shot that day I learnt photography this thread I want to learn digital cameras, sensors mainly to see which are the best at handling light. I have been trawling some sunset shots in here and it really surprising how many have to wait for the sun to set to get their shot in.

NOTE: I also forgot to specify the light meter setting use a spot meter and use the blue sky for a meter point if your camera is set so you can reposition shot keeping shutter button halfway down you will retain your meter reading, this will lighten up the photo's a fair bit.

Maybe install a windmill and run 12v alternator off it and charge up batteries most things will run on 12 volt with an inverter, I already have a generator, a cigarette lighter in the car a USB stick I can run the nbn ok from genny through ups. the trick would be to harness lightening 300,000,000 volts of electricity in lightening how do I know this I got hit by lightening in 2016 so I looked it up. If the network goes totally will we share photo's by smoke signal decode the images to numbers then send out the smoke signals to be decoded again bit like Morse code. or put a paddle wheel in a waterfall and power a generator with it. There will be many options like the steam powered generator rub two sticks together to start it. You know I have a photo of a centuries old aboriginal mixing bowel somewhere and it would have gone in here perfectly its possibly thousands of years old the depth its ground to.

OK my turn I started with a box browning in the early 70"s. I then got a practica and right up to 1996 I didn't understand apperature shutter speed etc and so many photo's would come out half black and half exposed the guy at the lab would tell me "your shutter tining is out". Didn't have a clue what he was talking about. I then got a Minolta X300 and with that manual -auto camera I learnt about shutter speeds etc using aperture piooity then I got a Minolta X700 with this camera I got published and some awards then in 2002 I purchased my first digital camera Pentax istd or somthing and never grasped it while exposures were good photo's were good the fact the files ended up hidden in the bowels of my computer made then useless I couldn't just open my photo album to look at them. Now I have more interest as I have my own website a diary to my VW and the repairs etc I do and also a facebook group also dedicated to VW repairs at home type sinario and with facebook and my website I see a point to digital photos but without the net I see no purpose for digital images.I got to the point where 97% of my photos were correctly exposed with film so there was very little waste and the 1 hour wait for processing was filled with anticipation it was like a drug no sooner you got your photos you were out looking for another fix. You also tried to make every photo the one. Now with digital its click click click oh one in the next 100 might turn out a good one. With digital it just doesn't seem to matter so much anymore. Before taking good photos was being different now not taking photos is being diifferent. Just a rant. The fact my Mrs now has dementia has a lot to do with with my negative attitude to images also as the good days are gone now and its a waiting game now. I do need to get out more on my own and take some shots.

I have come across auto focus issues due to electrical contacts getting dirty or somthing and I clean them with a fiberglass contact cleaning pen then they work fine. One lens worked fine on analogue but not on digital 28-200mm Sigma gave it a clean and it started working perfectly on both digital and analogue so work that one out.

Just punch some leather with double sided tape stuck to the leather, then stick the round leather to the shutter button. Neat no need for messy glue.

Dissappointed with pentax Shutter Buttons

In 1999 I complained to Pentax Australia about the shutter buttons on the New Mz-5's back then when I took a photo on the right side of the image would be blurry it was so bad that I had to use a tripod for every photo I took. I found that the problem was when I depressed the shutter button I would also be pressing down on the rim around the shutter button as the button did not protrude high enough to allow me to depress the shutter button. So I purchased a roll of double sided tape and stuck on the inside of an old pair of work boots I had and then got my 3/8" leather hole punch and proceeded to punch some holes in the boot where the tape was as I had several cameras then removed the clear plastic from the other side of the double sided tape and stuck these on the shutter buttons on my cameras so my fingers would not contact the body of the camera when I depressed the button and it worked. I reported this to Pentax Australia thinking they would make improvements and they did they didn't fix the shutter button problem as still today the shutter buttons don't protrude high enough to clear the camera body when depressed what they did was introduce anti shake features which works most of the time and now I am getting older I'm not as steady as I used to be so could pentax please make their shutter buttons taller to reduce camera shake caused by depressing the shutter button my newest camera is a K-m next ist-D then Mz-5 Mz-M Mz-50 Mz-10 k-1000, K-500, ME, SFX so as you can see I have been loyal to Pentax all my life won some awards so when I use a 2000m lens I don't want any camera shake from the shutter button my K-m the shutter button is flush with the rim around it please stop making this error.

Good morning 26/4/2018 This thread is for un edited photos except in the photo app in windows 10. I personally do like some of the edited photos but I don't like to edit my photo's as I like the story my camera tells.

No photo shopping only Camera filters and Win Photo app No light box no photo magic just what you can get out of your camera. Lens filters etc acceptable and win 10 Photo app for those who's cameras aren't set up properly. any features in your camera are welcome. Definitely no Hours on a computer fixing or creating images only fine tuning by photo app.
