I want to improve my black and white photography, so I bought a red lens filter in the hope of getting better blue skies. But shooting in RAW, with my K-1, and trying to convert the DNG files results in a totally red image. How do I get the DNG files to work with the red filter for better B&W images? Please advise. And thanks in advance.

I'm wondering if I could repurpose an older Pentax camera to build a camera trap. I don't want blurry infrared images taken at night. I want high-res crisp daylight images of animals I wouldn't otherwise encounter or be able to get near. I know camera traps are sold commercially to hunters. I'm wondering if I could build my own. Does anyone have any experience in this? I welcome your advice and thank you in advance.

Can someone explain to me why there are two versions of this lens? Why would you prefer the silver vs. the black, or vice-versa?
Thanks in advance! :)

Okay, inasmuch as you asked. I do a fair amount of night photography. And I don’t have very steady hands. So it’s long exposures on a tripod. I generally use a heavy-duty steel Manfrotto and it ain’t lightweight.
So imagine this. You want to photography Delicate Arch in Utah and capture the Milky Way or a meteor shower in the background. It’s August. Your start your pilgrimage from the parking lot. It’s a 550-foot vertical rise to the Arch. You’re starting at an altitude of about 9,000 feet above sea level, if memory serves, so the air, at least for an East Coast resident who lives at sea level is rather thin. And you’re carrying your trusty Pentax K (not lightweight) and you need a 20 or 15 mm lens (also not lightweight), plus a backup lens, a bottle of water, and, of course, your trusty tripod and ballhead. Did I mention it’s about 80 degrees Fahrenheit and you’ll be coming down in the dark? So you’ll need a flashlight or two also.
I’m not willing to make all that effort, and trust the outcome to a flimsy, lightweight carbon fiber or aluminum tripod that I know from past experience is sensitive to the wind blowing. So the alternative is to get strong, carry all this heavy gear and resolve that this is the price you pay for art.

In my experience, you can't trust aluminum or carbon fiber to hold a Pentax and a heavy lens steady. The solution is to get stronger physically. Or switch away from Pentax to a light-weight alternative.

I've got a Rokonon 20 mm but am looking for something wider. Must be full-frame, of course. Your thoughts and recommendations? Thanks in advance for weighing in...

I am confused about coatings and wonder if some Pentax lenses are better than others for capturing images that will eventually be processed and printed as black and white. I shoot a K-1. Your thoughts? Thanks in advance.

This is my first post here. I’m a “panoholic” with a passionfor astrophotography. I recently traded my K-7 and K-5iis for a K-1, and I’mthrilled with this new camera. I’ve had a fair bit of experience shooting MilkyWay photos and dozens of star trails – bored by them now – but have yet to masterthe Pentax Astrotracker feature. Cananyone point me to some specific instruction on how to get the best resultswith the Astrotracker? -- SunDance |
