Since you are the OP and you asked for it, here it is. Otherwise I wouldn't have forced my version on everyone.

I like the added clarity, and the darker/less vibrant purple, but don't like that crop. maybe more off the bottom if you want to crop it like that. while on the left third yes, the snakes eye is in the middle of top/bottom... I preferred the original crop over this one. Without downloading it and looking, the eye was closer to the bottom third, and probably fit a golden ratio crop fairly closely. Not the swirly version, in LR it is the one that almost looks like the 1/3s but the lines are a bit closer in the centre. ---------- Post added 12-16-2019 at 04:46 AM ---------- The original crop also worked for me because it really framed the snake, put it in it's environment, and the little branch at the bottom was a sweet little piece of eye candy...

The added clarity on the eye really works for me

I can't work out if I'd prefer a bit more sharepness/clarity on the head! Other than that I love this shot. Great colour too.

As you've said yourself the colours here look really great. Only thing I would do is either crop or introduce some subtle vignetting so the top and bottom of the image don't distract from the subject. Nice work!

If it were my shot, I would probably crop a little off the bottom and a bit more off the top. At first I'd be tempted to do some sharpening just on the snakes head, but on second thought the slight softness adds an ethereal dreamy effect that I like better. Really cool shot; congratulations.

A bit too much purple saturation for me. I'd have dialed it back a bit and also dropped it's luminescence a tad, so the snake was brighter. You'd still have the strong balancing colours, but the purple wouldn't be so... *bam! in your face!* It does take away from the snake.

I don't think I would change it. As you say, the colours make an interesting contrast. Nice shot.

I don't think anything is in focus, as other pointed out. Even the bud seems front focused to me. Also, the highlights are blown out.
Composition-wise, I think I would try different angles next time but getting most of the bud in focus and exposing a bit lower to save the highlights might have made this work.
I do like what you were trying to accomplish, worth another shot for sure :)

Shot handheld after trivia at 250mm. It was actually high in the sky for how red it was so I suspect the fires that are all over are affecting how large an angle above the horizon the moon stays this red.

Interesting situation, just an idea that pop up.
Try to put the glass on a glass surface and put the light source from underneath, Put a darker background and smaller apperture

In regards to the focus - as it was mentioned already - try with smaller aperture and probably a tripod with manual focus and remote trigger.
In regards to the flare - you can try with two light sources from the side of the vase. This way you will not have any flare and will also have even light.
In regards to the composition itself - you can try with a bit more distance in order to capture some of the surroundings. The other option is to move a bit closer and to capture only the water (w/o the vase). For both options you can use something black as a background (cardboard, curtain or something else).

Attended the EAA AirVenture for the first time ever. Quite awesome to see the many current and past planes. I had a hard time cooperating with my camera over the weekend, but these came out decently. :D |

Smaller aperture, f/8 instead of f/5.6 will give you a bit more depth of field. Going up above f/11 or 13 may get diffraction error into the image as well as a deeper DOF.

Get a square (ish) vase or glass and you can beat the flare with the wall of glass perpendicular to the lens. Keep a flat tank or vase side parallel to the sensor and it should be less likely to flare and easier to focus. Then set lights or natural light and go to f/8 for a bit more DOF.

I would say yes, and taller too. The flare is hard to overcome. There's got to be a trick to it.

Here is one of my most favorite shots from my KX.
I used an SMC Pentax-A, Zoom, 35~70mm, lens
It is a conversion from a Kodak Kodachrome 64 film slide using my Pentax Slide Copying bellows.
The location is on the Staten Island Ferry in New York City, New York in late March (somewhere around 1988- 1989).
I have more from this series that I'll post later...

Next stop - digi-cassette tapes, fairly simple - connect the "cassette" to your computer via usb, transfer strictly 90 minutes of music onto it, put the tape into the player and enjoy your music! :)

I'd say "try recropping" but as previously stated, something needs more focus in this picture :)

...and will hopefully share the resulting pics here?
Little bit of a shame it's gone to someone who already has a K1 mk2 so only likely to be used as a backup body.
