Global Warming Again

Does all of the global warming stuff take into account the CO2 and other gases released during volcanos and earthquakes? Just a honest to goodness question. I know that one of the biggest threats to life on earth was during the "Snowball Earth" period and it was only because of seismic and volcanic activity that the earth warmed up. Greenhouse gases to the rescue there.

Frankly, even if the earth warms up and sea levels rise and cause all the calamities foretold by scientists (who are NEVER EVER WRONG btw) things won't change that much. Sure there will be famines, wars, extinctions, plagues and what not but it's not like that isn't happening now. Humanity will adjust. If we don't we'll die-out like most species that has ever lived on earth.

As far as life going extinct I doubt that anything short of our Sun going Nova, a Gamma ray burst or a mega-asteroid pulverizing the planet will wipe out LIFE. We might go extinct and so might other things but LIFE is resilient and persistent.

As for me. I try not to pollute because I don't like breathing stinky air or dirty water. Not because I feel some desire to "Save the Planet".

I know it this is rambling and I apologize for that. I guess I'll stop now.

Am I a Troll? :)

I just realized this is probably in the wrong thread. Moderator please move.

So late last night I was bored and I decided to do a spoof review of the 5d Mark III. Some people liked it. One guy called me a Nikon fanboy and one guy called me a troll. Both don't realize the point of what I did. Either way, it is the most helpful critical review of it right now. Wondering what you all think of it? Feel free to give a thumbs up for helpfulness.

Here's the link

Here's what I wrote:

I bought this camera because I need higher quality profile pictures for my Facebook. My 1.3 megapixel (I think that's what it is called) camera on my flip phone wasn't cutting it. I make a dang good sexy-duck-face and with 22 glorious megapixels, it really shines. I would have given it fives stars except it hurts my wrist to hold it one handed while taking said sexy-duck-face pictures.

Also, I want a camera that earned me some respect. Nothing says serious photographer like a camera that cost as much as my car. I will admit that I am new to photography but that's ok. This camera almost takes the pictures for me. I get respect from all of my Instagram friends with this camera. Only problem is...I can't seem to find the "grundge" filters on it. I docked a star for that. Now if only I could find a good set of railroad tracks...

Also another problem, the touch screen on this camera seems to be broken. I am thinking of taking it back but don't want to deal with the hassle.

I also had and issue when I first starting taking photos. Nothing ever turned out. Luckily I called a friend of mine who let me borrow a lens. What kind of a camera maker ships a camera without a lens?

I also don't think this camera needs all of those extra features. I mean seriously, who uses anything but "Auto"? Waste of space if you ask me. Plus the Tv function doesn't seem to work. Question for the masses... Anyone know of a good antenna for this? I'd love to watch my shows on this thing. I prefer if it was something discrete. I don't want to have to carry a set of rabbit ears around if you know what I'm saying.

So to sum it up.

Pros:
Takes good pictures
I feel pretty cool with this hanging around my neck
I get respect when people see this

Cons:
Hurts my wrist when taking self portraits
Doesn't come with a lens
Too many modes. I just want "Auto"
Can't find the "grundge" filters
Touch screen on back is broken.
Internal Antenna doesn't work. Looking for a good external one if anyone knows of a good brand.

Would I Recommend It?:
If it wasn't for all the respect I get when people see this hanging around my neck it would be a toss up.

In-Body SR vs. In-Lens SR Pros and Cons?

The two systems are essentially the same in effectiveness.

Lens Based

Pros:
The stabilization is fit exactly to the lens
You can see the stabilization in effect through the viewfinder

Cons
The lens is a lot heavier
The lens is a lot more expensive.
It's not necessarily any better.

Sensor based

Pros
Works with all lenses
Just as effective as lens based stabilization

Cons
Can't see the effect through the viewfinder.

I am a big fan of body-based stabilization.

So much Negativity from Pentaxians

I agree. Pentaxians seem to be so used to getting down on their own brand that they don't know how to be happy about something. Frankly if they are so unhappy about Pentax why don't they switch the brands they keep comparing Pentax to.

Also, this camera isn't in the wild yet so we don't know how it performs. Frankly, it looks like the most impressive camera yet. Can't wait to see the K-5!

So much Negativity from Pentaxians

In our current society, the brands you buy have become an extension of yourself. Therefore, we tend to identify with a brand and that becomes part of who we are. It also helps us to feel as if we are part of a larger community.

i.e. "I (We) shoot Pentax" "I (We) drive Subarus" "I (We) will never use a Mac"...etc.

Conversely, people who use the "other" brands are also equally marked by us (generally negatively).

i.e. "He's a Canikon shooter" "He drives Fords" "He's a Mac fanboy"

When a person leaves a brand that they strongly identify with, they are in some sense leaving their "Tribe" or community of people and that is difficult for many.

As far as the Pentax fanboyism goes, it's because they make the best cameras I can afford. ;););)

Photokina 2010, Pentax and the full frame mystery

I whole-heartedly disagree. Pentax does not have to put out a full frame camera. I think that it is much more important to re-establish a solid pro-support system as well as a camera that they market as a full-pro camera a la the Olympus e-3. The e-3 is marketed as a full pro camera, has a sensor smaller than APS-C and yet allows Olympus to stay relevant in the pro market.

What is killing Pentax is that they are marketing themselves as a photo-enthusiast brand and not a brand where a photo-enthusiast can grow into a pro.

All other major brands have a path to pro. Why not Pentax? It keeps them from being taken seriously.

I do 99% of everything that I need to do in PP in Aperture. All the photos on my website were processed in Aperture. I only go into PS when there is some hardcore/wonky/crazy stuff that needs to be done. Aperture is great.

Close to buying K-X

1) Pentax doesn't have a big presence in most camera stores in the US. In fact a lot of dealers will tell you that Pentax is going out of business. This is not true. Pentax is doing very well and is on the up swing. As far as buying your camera, buying it online at a reputable dealer like Amazon, Adorama or B&H will save you money over buying it from a brick and morter store.

2) Live view is slow to focus no matter the brand. I don't know how the two stack together though. If you want fast focus, regardless of make/model...shoot through the viewfinder.

3) If you are stepping up from a point-and-shoot I don't think that you will notice a difference between seeing the AF points or not. The camera still focuses fine. The AF points just tell you where the camera is focusing. I always shoot using the center AF point (It's always the most accurate) using the Focus-Recompose technique . I believe the KX will still beep to confirm focus.

Also, the KX has the best low-light performance in it's class.
