How do you deal with feeling like you didn't improve?

I must admit that I am fairly unambitious (with anything - easily pleased !), but having thought about this topic, it has never occurred to me that I need to 'improve' (in what sense, exactly ?). I enjoy photography to the best of my limited abilities, and I still obtain enjoyment from the images I have taken over the years. None of my output could be described as 'fine art' as that is not the result for which I am looking - I merely want to produce images I enjoy looking at, and which friends enjoy as well (NOT the dreaded 'Holiday Snaps slideshow', I hasten to add!) I suppose really I just try to preserve a record of what I liked looking at - occasionally serendipity kicks in, and I produce something worth sharing if any one is interested - to quote Rick Nelson 'You can't please everybody, so you have to please yourself'.

'Don't look back - you're not going that way'.

My dose of creativity for the week was little more than a doodle - 10 minutes of work. From a shot of a koru using cross polarisation.
I liked it enough to put it in a club competition!.

As others have mentioned, "uBlock Origin". Install that as an add-on within Firefox, and the vast majority of ads on streaming services and websites will be blocked (since it's a Firefox add-on, it's OS-independent). I've been using it for years with no complaints at all. As @gatorguy says, occasionally a website will detect I'm running an ad-blocker and will refuse to load further unless I disable it - but most are fine...

Not content with ignoring blatant breaches of speeding and parking legislation, UK police have taken to lurking outside pubs in the hopes of apprehending drivers who have less than the legal limit of blood in their alcohol stream. One such stalwart law guardian was on duty outside the Fox and Duck, waiting patiently.

Suddenly the door was flung open and a chap staggered out, waving a beer bottle and singing loudly about some lady called Lilly Margarine, or some such name. He wended his unsteady way towards some parked cars, trying his key in the doors of them until he found one which fitted.

He opened the door, let loose an enormous belch, then somehow managed to crawl behind the driver's seat, whence he complained vociferously in fluent Anglo Saxon that someone, whose parents he alleged were unwed, had stolen the steering wheel.

Finally emerging into the cockpit, he started the engine and shot off round the car park - in reverse. The peeler watched in stupefied amazement at the antics, wincing in anticipation as the car shot towards the two massive posts guarding the entrance to the car park. As it exited, however, the lights were turned on, and it proceeded at a steady 29 mph along the road, keeping to the left and signalling when necessary.

The copper gave chase, of course, feeling certain he was about to make an arrest that would revive his flagging career. Pedalling furiously, his blue serge trousers flapping wildly over his enormous boots, he doggedly pursued the car until it halted at a T junction.

Panting hard, he rapped on the window, and requested the sole occupant to inflate the alcohol test equipment. To his amazement, the driver was stone cold sober !

He asked the driver to explain this unprecedented phenomenon. The driver replied :

I'm the decoy.

HWJ - hot water jug is my guess.
If I interpret correctly, @bobD was drinking 24 coffees a day! Probably the shaking and lack of sleep made him go cold turkey

I'm sure you'll not be disappointed. A friend of mine has one and she make excellent coffee with it. I've tried to pull shots with it, but it's a hit and miss affair for me.
When I get a chance I'll photograph my new bottomless filter basket in action. It makes for a beautiful crema.

My grandfather (a relative of yours!) also died in a car accident. All I have of him are photographs, as he died not long after my 3rd birthday and I have no memory of him.

I do have some photos I took with "a rubbishy plastic camera" on one of our family holidays down at Mangles Valley. It's great to have those to bolster the memories. I can still pinpoint the field where we used to pitch the tent. Or at least, it was a field at the time. I think there are some buildings there now. Note to self: I must write up my memories of those holidays.

---------- Post added 12-16-2022 at 04:47 PM ----------

Today was the first day of my Christmas break, so I headed into Zealandia for opening time (to beat the hordes of kids).

The first sight that greeted me, I have titled Valley of the Dinosaurs.

And of course I got bird shots. Some pretty nice ones, but a couple of standouts for me.

It's not like I need more Tūī shots (I have 51 published shots now), but when they present right in front of me on a flax...

And shortly afterwards, I was similarly presented with this Kererū.

A lady and her teenage daughter were sitting one evening. The mother said 'Please hand me the telephone directory'.

The teenager rolled her eyes, and saying 'Mother, you are so out of date !' handed over her i-Phone.

'Thank you' said the adult, taking the item.

The Spider is now dead.

So, it seems, is the i-Phone.

How many moved or plan to move to battery from gas/ac power equipment?

It depends. I've slowly been replacing my hand tools with Makita brushless tools, either corded or battery. The battery range tools have a battery that is compatible with all tools right across the range.
LXT System is the world's largest 18V slide-style battery system so it's nice that everything fits the same battery.

Of course, it will be interesting to see how their new XGT 40V | 80V system gets traction in the market.

There are still tools where electric / battery does not cut it (spot the pun) and one example for me is the woodchipper. That has a 4-stroke Honda engine and it can run all day long. I'd also struggle with an electric chainsaw at this stage, for the same reason.

I take it that one won't be going tramping. At least if anyone complains about your purchasing habits, you can say you are economising by combining photography and weight training in one purchase. ;)

It was a nice warm evening here, so I took a walk around Caroline Bay with the K-3 III and FA31. I have to say I am very happy with the low light capability of that combo. It was completely dark towards then end of the walk, and I still got some good images

We usually get car analogies, but for camera analogies I would say :

macOS = Up-market P&S
Windows = Prosumer with scene selection modes and a 15-500 mm (equivalent) lens
Linux = Full frame DSLR with no scene selection modes and bring your own lens

Most people don't get that far. The first hurdle is installing it, and then they realise it won't run their favourite Windows apps. You are not restricted to downloading apps from the Linux repositories, you can download from websites too. I have a website from which you can download a Linux app, but a better known example is Firefox - it is in the repositories too but probably not the latest version.

I don't find installing Windows particularly easy (I have some versions in VMs), in fact harder than installing Linux. That's to be expected because most people never have to install Windows because most home PCs have it pre-installed as an image by the makers. OTOH entities like Ubuntu have to lean over backwards to make it easy for the amateur to install. I also find Windows harder to administer, in fact extremely frustrating, when I have to sort out Lady L's Win10 laptop when things go wrong, which is usually after one of Microsoft's uninvited updates. I constantly run up against Catch 22 situations with Windows. I'm sure it depends on what you are accustomed to.

I don't know why you have to involve the command line if you don't want to. I use it sometimes for its power and convenience, but it is a myth that it is essential for using Linux for routine things.
