Pentax Takumar 50mm 1.4 Review

Just the 100mm macro F4 which I pitted against my modern canon 100 USM macro. I tested the 35 and 200 at the vintage camera sale but didn’t have enough cash for all the Lenses so had to pick between the two. I love macro so the macro was a go for sure and the 50 was such a good price. I would have taken the 35 1.8 but it was the most expensive of the bunch. I would buy it now in a heart beat so looking forward to the next sale.

I have a Pentax SLR which was my dads. Going to use that to start shooting film. I’m mostly a video guy which is why I use Sony and canon...stills have always been a hobby. The vintage Pentax has got me appreciating the brand pretty heavily though.

Amazing! What has been your prime source and what is a good price for 200F4 85 1.8 and 35 1.8?

I thought the 8 element one was newer lol. Disinformation I read perhaps. I need to read more about the history of this lens.

It was at a Vintage Camera sale actually. It was near the end of the big sale and I suspect the vendors were just wanting to off their wares. I shot my experience at the event and in my broll i saw it was marked up at $80 earlier, but I bought them JUST as they were shutting down and picked up a 100mm Macro F4 (tak) and the leather carrying case.

Agreed! I personally don't get too much into particulars...I either like the image results or I don't. It's almost never absolute either...even if there is a look i don't love there may be a way to exploit it creatively.

Totally OT on my own thread, but any of you guys have experience with the 35mm F2 and 200mm F4? I'm looking to pick those two up to finish off the focal range. 35, 50, 100 and 200

Hey guys! So I've been dabbling in vintage lenses for the past 18 months or so and Takumar's have quickly become my favourites. I compared the 100mm Macro F4 to a Modern Canon 100mm F2.8 awhile ago and wanted to do a review on my favourite 50mm lens.

I'm sure you guys know all about this, but I just wanted to share my thoughts on the lens in a video I did here.

Now keep in mind I'm 90% videographer/editor and have always done photography as a hobby so a big part of what I love about these lenses and this one in particular is how it performs when shooting video on my mirrorless camera.

A big part of why i make these videos is to reach a younger market who I see online complaining that they can't afford these fast prime lenses their photographic heroes are using. $1500 for a modern Canon 1.4 24mm vs $50 for a vintage Pentax Tak 50mm 1.4.

Anyway always a pleasure to be part of this like minded community. It's such a fantastic resource and place to share our love for these lenses/cameras.

Hi BrianR thanks for the additional info. Would love to see the results of your tests!

I started shooting some test footage a farther distances but the weather turned suddenly and had to scrap that. (Snow began). Pretty much rained the next three days so I scrapped it.

I agree. Preferences are so specific depending on what you are looking for as a photographer. To be able to source a vintage lens for far less than a new lens to experiment with is always good. I couldn’t choose one over the other, I was just so fascinated to see how much I enjoyed the $100 lens vs the $600 lens. :)

Thank you!

And yes coatings are a big deal, it’s been so cloudy here lately (December in southern Ontario is grey) so definitely something to look at with my wider lenses for another review.

Some people love flaring others hate it. Really I guess it depends on the look you are going for.

Thanks for your comment!

Beauty thanks so much for that explanation. I was wondering if I should include it but since I didn’t have any or any experience with them I thought I’d leave it out of that one.

Thanks for the compliment on video, it was fun to make ;).

Ya I address that in the vid, a small setback given the price of the lens. I don’t know enough about extendor tubes, do they sacrifice image quality at all do you know?

Hey guys, I picked up a vintage Pentax Takumar 100mm Macro F4 (M42 mount) as well as a 50mm 1.4 at a recent vintage camera sale. I compared the macro to my modern Canon 100mm macro and was pretty surprised at the results. Keep in mind, most of my camera work is done in VIDEO format so I'm aware the technicalities in the differences between the two.

I just the vintage lenses on my DSLR with cheap adapters. My grandfather's camera was a Pentax and M42 mount (SLR) so I purchased these lenses to shoot film on his camera as well as adapt them to my Sony A7SII. Really happy with the quality and ultimately that's what got me here.

Video is here:

Keep in mind I shot all the CU macro stuff on the Canon lens with the Pentax F4 macro and all the Pentax CU stuff with the Canon F2.8.

Hi everyone; new here as I’ve discovered the quality of Pentax lenses through some vintage lenses. Just here to share in knowledge and do some learning.
