OP again. Having spent a lot of time reading this forum's lens reviews and the great suggestions from everyone, I seem to have got to a conclusion:- 24-50 f4 A
I really prefer 24mm to 28mm and this strikes a great balance compared to the pricer wider fixed focal length offerings. Quality wise, the A seems a bit better than the M. I know I said primes, but the 24-50 seems to get the best reviews of all the short zooms and bests most of the moderately priced primes. 50 f1.4 M
Gives me low light capability within the lens set, without the cost of a 1.2. 135 f3.5 M
In for its size and price - I have already picked up a minty one for $40.
But all this reading has led me to covert more lenses - I'm in a downward spiral. I can see myself adding the following two lens which seem to be rated highly without costing the earth:-
28 f3.5 K
100 f2.8 A
So there we are, thanks to the community for helping me through the Pentax MF maze.

OP here, thanks to everyone for sharing their experiences, views and ideas. let me share some initial thoughts/reactions.
I am not so keen on the longer range tele's as it seems to defeat the size point of an MX and may be unbalanced. Having said that I have just purchased an MX winder (before I have even got there camera!). Any love for the SMC A 100mm f2.8 or is this a bit on the big side?
At the wide end 28mm seems to be most people's preference, but I also like the 21 - 24mm focal length - great for landscape and environmental shooting without to much distortion that super wides can produce. Views on the K 20mm f4?
The standard focal length I find the hardest to decide - perhaps I go for a full set of M 40mm f2.8, A 50mm f1.2, and M f1.7. Having said that, there is one camera I am considering at the moment and it comes with the M 50mm f1.4.
I like the left field zoom short range zoom option, one to do a bit of research on.

Firstly, let me introduce myself. I am a keen photographer of some 30 years and shoot a mix of film and digital in 35mm and MF, using both SLR and rangefinders. To date I only briefly flirted with Pentax (an SFXn) but want to now experience an MX.
So regarding lens, if you were to choose only 3 primes for the MX to cover a range of Shooting situations, balancing quality, price and size, what would they be?
Thanks
