May I suggest a different subject to compare the K1 images with the K10d?

There is a clear difference when comparing skin tones between the two.
Not even taking into account I am an admirer of the K10d body I prefer the images made with the K10d.

Right. Just ask this from you.
Use a mobile phone, take a picture.
Do the same with a totally outdated K10d.

Compare the images.
I did the K10d wins time and time again.

I do not even need to compare the images.
What comes from a mobile phone looks nice but fails when you take a closer look.

That is why fools like us drag along a camera instead of a mobile phone.

Hydraulic suspension is a modification that is not necessary. Respect the original design and leave the car in that condition.
My 1920 Pierce Arrow is in the condition it was in when it left the factory over a hundred years ago.
I owe it to that car to keep it that way.

So far I have not found this issue with any of my K10d bodies.
The one I use most of the time has the Katzeye viewing glass.
It has 22.000 clicks and is still going strong.

I understand you 100%.

The K10d is a bout the most underrated 10 Mp camera that I know.
Some years ago I was able to find these gems for a song.
I decided to give the lenses I use often each its own body. I have 4 K10d bodies now.

I had five but decided to send the K10d with only 3900 clicks to a dear friend in Australia.
It was meant as backup for his K10d. He decided to use the one I sent him which is an excellent idea.
These K10d bodies deserve it to be used. That is what they are for.

Chris does not make clear why a K3iii body will not be suitable.
Is it the idea of using an APS-C sensor that makes him have doubts?

The K1 is without any doubt the flagship of Pentax but who really needs those large files?

I had no problem going back to 10 Mp for the kind of photography I do most of the time.
If need be I have MF at my disposal which offers more resolution than a K1 camera can give.

Nice images, I like the branch taken with the 50 mm lens most.

It is hard to believe Australia, a complete continent, had no longer acces to internet.
No internet, no cell phones, no landlines either. This lasted several days.
I am informed the total lack of communications happened after an atempt to upgrade the software.

The new software also contained 5G software. Australia does not have 5G.
The result is the whole network with all service providers went down.

Can it happen again? Yes it can.
Can it happen in other countries too? Yes it can.
It depends on the safety messures the network has.

Maintainance of CMOS or memory or backup-battery

Of two K10d bodies with failing CMOS batteries I managed to restore the BU battery in one of those bodies.
A friend in Australia also tried to charge the BU battery of his K10d without succes.

It looks like bodies that were left long time without charged battery will not pick up any power in their BU batteries.
I am happy the BU battery in one of my two K10d bodies could be saved.
From now on I will keep bodies that I do not use fitted with a fully charged battery.

I thank photogem very much for his explanation of the memory system in our cameras.

It is time I informed you about the peculiar development the K10d brought about with me.
The outstanding image quality the K10d delivers made me sell my K5ii.

I have been using several K10d bodies that I found on local sites for used equipment.
Prices varied from 40 to 80 euro for K10d kits witch included lenses.
After selling the lenses I did not need average price dropped to 25 euro for clean bodies with no more than 20.000 clicks.

Besides a 17- 50 Sigma lens I kept the 18-200 Sigma lens and found a good 15 mm Pentax lens to fill the need for a true WA.

The lens I use most is the Pentax 50 mm AF Macro lens. It is to make pictures for the MF cameras I make a living with.
Selling MF gear is still profitable as long as the name Hasselblad is on the camera.

With several excellent K10d bodies it was not difficult to give each lens its own K10d.

The body with the lowest shutter count had less than 4000 clicks. I did not use that body which is not a good idea.
I gave the low shutter count body to a friend who owns only one K10d. It is on its way to him and could well reach him tomorrow if UPS puts in a little extra effort.

We got to know each other through this forum. He answered the questions I should have answered myself provided I took the time to read the manual.
I still don't. I prefer to ask questions and get a complete breakdown on the matter by my good friend.
It suits my conviction I do not need a manual, I know what it is about. Of course that is not true but I am too old to change this habit.

The K10d fulfills all my digital photo needs. I get great images from Hasselblad cameras and lenses. Those images help me sell MF gear well.
Being used to dragging along a large camera bag made it easy for me to take with me two or three K10d bodies with lenses attached to them.

I just noticed nearly ten years have gone by since the K10d club started. It is a pleasure to notice this club is still going strong.

There is nothing wrong in purposly limiting yourself to 10 Mp.
A common mistake is pixel counting to compare the quality of cameras.

The only real advantage that later bodies with more Mp have is higher ISO with less noise.
Noise from older bodies can be reduced in PP.

I like the color rendering of the CCD the K10d uses.
It is closer to the results I get with film.

This is as close au you can get to MF photography.
MF gives the impression you are looking at a 3D image.
I get the same feeling looking at this bridge.

It was made by a K10d with a common zoom lens, nothing special.
The K10d is without any doubt a camera that deserves our praise.

A couple of weeks before Christmas I sold a Hasselblad camera to a client in Vienna Austria.
I ordered the camera from my supplier in Sweden. He promised to send it to Austria directly.

Christmas was getting nearer but no sign of a camera in Austria.
The buyer got the tracking data but that did not help much.
PostNord in Sweden only stated under transport.
Christmas passed, the buyer mentioned talking to his lawyer.
It turned out the camera was meant to be a Christmas gift for his son.

I use a tracking site that covers all carriers world wide.
Suddenly it showed Sydney as location. Sydney? Is there a city called Sydney in Austria?
Two days later I was contacted by customs in Sydney asking me what the camera was doing in Australia.
I explained PostNord apperently does not know the difference between Austria and Australia.
How this parcel left the EU without invoice and customs documents is still a miracle.

Now I needed to convince the buyer it would take another week to get the camera from Sydney Australia to Vienna in Austria.
Eight days later it arrived in Vienna. The camera travelled 40.000 km to reach the buyer.
I did not dare mention it was nicely in time for that years Christmas.

This was the last time I ever used any other shipping company than UPS.
I sleep better and have no more worries about missing parcels.

PostNord never even bothered to reply about complaints for this shipment.

For accurate WB there is only one way. Use a white reference and let the camera adjust the WB with a test reading.
All other settings can only approach the correct setting.

More good news from the trade situation for K10d bodies.
Excellent K10d cameras can still be found under 100 euro.
Recently saw a ultra low shutter count one advertised for 99 euro.
With less than 1400 clicks it must be the K10d with least amount of shutter activations.

Farmers like to talk about how many acres of land they own.

Farmer 1 says it takes me 4 hours to cross my land walking.

Farmer 2 says I can not even go over my land walking takes too long. With a tractor it takes 5 hours.

Farmer 3 says that is nothing compared to my situation. Even when I use a car to drive around my land it takes 6 hours.

Says farmer 1: I used to have a car like that.

Patient is in the doctors office to hera the results of his medical check up. The doctor reads the seults of the tests and tell the patient he is in good condition. Nothing serious was found. the patient is quite relieved and is about to leave the office. Just a minute, I have not finished yet.
The doctor tells the patient he should lose 25 pounds of weight, quit smoking and drink less alcohol.
If I manage to follow your advice does that mean I will live longer? No you won't live longer but it sure looks like you will live longer.

Glinda,

Take your time to get to know the K10d. Many users are like me. We already know it all. Still it is useful to read the manual to get some idea of the options the camera offers.
To start with JPEGs will do fine. RAW files need different software against JPEG that can be handled with free software like GIMP.

Under certain conditions AF with FA lenses can be erratic. It is not you, most of the time it is the lens that causes problems. The focussing limiter on some FA lenses does not help much.

I would start with setting the ISO value for different modes. The manual will probably answer your questions. At least I found the answers I had in the manual.
Last but not least you will find many users in this section ready to answers questions if you can not find the answer.

Against my habit not to spend money on broken cameras I bought an early 500C camera with damaged transport knob and detached drive shaft at the bottom of the lens opening. The transport knob can be exchanged. The damaged drive shaft is a serious problem.
I can use the chrome shell and the viewing screen with rare split to improve a 1958 year camera with an ugly shell.
Mechanical parts can be used to restore the oldest 500C in my collection. That is camera number 15 made in the first week of production in 1957.
Pure luck to find a good donor.

I suppose this one is less suitable to brighten the walls of the lady hairdresser shop. :D
