I currently Own a Pentax Program Plus...Looking at an LX

I own an LX, MX, KX, Super Program, Program Plus and PZ-1p and the the LX gets used twice as much as the others. First off, with the winder and the grip it fits my hands perfectly. Secondly that silver coating on the viewfinder results in crystal clear images and It makes focusing with either the split image, collar or whole viewfinder much easier than with the other cameras. That, plus it provides all the info I need for the shot. I only rarely use it in Automatic; that's reserved for a quick shot in uncertain light when I have to focus quickly and don't have time to process everything. I've two prisms for it; the FA-1 and FB-1 which gets used with the long lenses I use a lot. Great camera, There's more to photography then a good lens/film. How the rest of the tool works and feels is also important.

I did the same thing, and it still doesn't get much use, but then again if I have to manually focus I'd rather use one of my film cameras.

Took the kayak out yesterday on a beautiful 77 degree day, and it seems that every thing just woke up suddenly. Turtles(Painted and Snapping), plants, waterfowl(red Breasted Merganser female) dragonflies zooming around etc. Great day to be out.

Sports 55th Running of the Red Moshannon Downriver Race

Saturday was the 55th running of the Red Moshannon Downriver Race which is a 7.5 mile Class III white water event that starts at Flat Rock, Pennsylvania and runs to the RT. 53 Bridge. There were 178 participants(and two dogs). The race weather was 44 degrees(F) and light rain....not bad considering last year it was freezing rain/sleet/snow. The water was also the highest it's been since 2009. I was at the last obstacle before the finish line, and I try and shoot at least one shot of each boat that goes by. This year I took 586 photos of which I posted 383 to the Race website.

Took a Spring Equinox hike along a local rails-to-trails today and when I came to the small pond that's alongside it, heard frogs croaking for the first time this year. There were a bunch of Wood Frogs doing their mating and egg laying thing. I did spot one egg mass; there'll be a lot more soon. Nice way to usher in Spring!

Saw these unusual fungi growing along the trail for the first time. They grow around the world in the northern hemispheres. The Native Americans used them to stop bleeding, and they are considered edible...although not very tasty.

Spring is jerkily moving forward here in North Central Pennsylvania. Stopped by a local lake and in the murky shallow water spotted adult Eastern Newts moving around. They are more recognizable in their brief landbased stage when they turn a brilliant orange color before returning permanently to the water. The camera/lens did the best they could in the cloudy water conditions.

Poll: Jpeg or Raw - ?

I mainly shoot RAW, but I'm one of the official photographers for an upcoming white water race at the end of March. There are typically over 200 boats in the race and I often shoot 0ver 800 photos. Those will definitely be jpegs.....

Nature Cold Weather Bee

I was bring in firewood yesterday on a day that was sunny, but cold(41F) here in North Central Pennsylvania when I noticed something hovering around a small patch of Crocus. Walked over and there was a Honeybee working over the flowers. I was more surprised that it was a Honeybee; they normally aren't as cold tolerant as our native bees(I used to raise them). Grabbed my Super Program and the K3iii and snapped a few photos to welcome the first bee of the year I've seen. These are from the K3iii. Shutter speed was1/400 sec, which isn't listed in the presets.

Punxsutawney Phil says 6 more weeks of winter. My Crocus says, "Don't listen to that dumb rodent"....spring is here! Since I live in Pennsylvania not far from the rodent, here's hoping he's wrong(he mostly is).

My using Rangefinders have been the Konica Auto S2, Minolta Hi-matic 9 and Olympus 35SP. Lately I acquired these two wee ones; Olympus 35RC and Olympus XA. Both work perfectly, fit in my coat pocket and take great photos.

The very cold hardy Skunk Cabbage Spathes are starting to pop up everywhere. Within the Spathe is a heat producing(thermogenic) Spadix which is studded with tiny flowers. When the conditions are right, the Spathe opens, revealing the Spadix/flowers to bees/flies for pollination. The plant then leafs out normally.

I just acquired an LX from KEH that was listed as EXEC. As usual that means nearly pristine. Not a mark on it...and they do have a money back guarantee. Put a quick test roll of Fujicolor200 through it using a Rikenon P 28-100mm Macro and the shots are simply great. Hopefully, it'll last a good while like yours.

Came across two Whitetail bucks feeding together in some heavy brush along a creek. I could only see the one well enough to take a photo. Switched the camera to xs focus and 1.7X crop acquired from the last 1.7v firmware update. Did a good job of peeking through all the branches.
