I was one of those purely manual camera users that didn’t have much use for the MV and MV-1 back in the day, along with the other “new generation” automated cameras - even the ME series. We used to derisively refer to the MVs as “stoplight cameras.” The Nikon EM, AE-1 and a few others got lumped in to the same group. Now that I’m older (well, old) and mellower, I can see the value of a simple SLR for casual use. ---------- Post added 04-25-18 at 07:13 AM ----------
Thank you, I’m aware of the different cell characteristics - this was a question about a discrepancy in the manual about which chemistry battery should be used. It’s good to have this info in one place!

Will do! This was an impulse purchase, as was the MX I picked up a few months ago. I figured it would be a fun walk around camera to use with neg film.

Found the silver oxides, glad to see everything seems to work.

Thanks, everyone - I’ll look for the silver oxides, buy may need to settle on alkaline to test the camera.

I’m confused. The MV-1 manual makes reference to alkaline batteries being included, but the S76E battery listed in the manual is shown as being silver oxide in most places I’ve found. Which chemistry is preferred?

The Auto 110 always fascinated me back in the day. If they are going cheap, I should pick up a small kit just for fun.

Back in the day I went from an SP500 to a pair of MX bodies. The SP500 had a very dim VF compared to the newer MX, and IIRC it was also noticeably dimmer than most other mid and late 70s era SLR bodies.
Also, this may be teaching your granny to suck eggs, but... the SP500 isn't in stopdown metering mode, is it?

I don’t want continuous 5fps, I want the faster wind in single frame mode. I was used to the motor, and the winder’s advance is very noticably slower.

I used a pair of motorized MXes that I bought new in the 70s professionally as a stringer, but when I got my first job I had to convert to Nikon to have access to pool lenses and the support provided by NPS. To be honest I only knew one full time PJ shooting Pentax at that time, and only a very few shooting Canon - Nikon ruled.

I have an MX again for the first time in almost 40 years - in the 70s I had a pair with Motor MXes that I had to sell to move to Nikon when I got my first job. (Needed to be able to use pool lenses, and needed NPS-level support.) I’m enjoying it so much that I’m actively looking for another motor (the winder isn’t cutting it for me) and possibly even another body. I’m still a dedicated Nikon shooter, but I’m enjoying using Pentax again after all these years.

Lol - even mid sized ones!
The baffle is reattached, I’ll clean the inside of the lens up this weekend and reassemble. So far, so good.

Thanks for the confirmation. My cheap rubber strap wrenches have gone walkabout, so I’ll try to stop at the store tonight and grab a new pair. Light a candle for me! Lol

Uh-oh. Are they generally DOA at this point? ---------- Post added 12-13-17 at 02:49 PM ---------- I found an EX condition one at KEH. Possibly a little pricey, but at least is warranted to not be DOA.

Now that I’ll have a MX in my life again after nearly 40 years, I’d like to find a MX Winder. I remember that I much preferred the ergonomics of my old ones when they were motorized. (I had MX Motors with the Nicad packs before, but that doesn’t sound practical.)
What should I be looking out for in a used MX Winder?

Thank you! Are you saying the entire front element pair comes out as a cell? If so, is the cell internal to the barrel or does the barrel simply screw apart?

Thanks to all!
I’ve been to Le Roy! It’s been years, though - I’m north of I-80.

Bumping up this old thread because I have the same issue with a well-worn late variant SMC Pentax 500mm F4.5. I’ve had this lens for years but have never used it. Now that I have an MX body on the way, I’d like to repair it.
I’m leery of shipping it anywhere because the baffle is bouncing around and can contact what appears to be the rear of the second element. This is definitely not a collectors condition lens, so I’m willing to try repairing it myself first. I am a hobby model maker, so I do have tools and am used to working with precision items - just not lenses.
Can anyone help with specific tear down instructions, or even a photo or diagram showing how and where this lens comes apart?
Thanks!
