I tried to duplicate a shot Serge Ramelli did incorporating one of his images of the Milky Way with my shot of cars passing the Arc de Triumph with a crescent moon in the center.

Thanks, that answers my issue. I do have firmware version V1.02 so I should be good to go. I want to set up tethering and the instructions for the K-1 were to use the latest firmware which as you say I apparently have. I now hope there are no other differences to setting up tethering on a k-1 II.

Is there an issue with the firmware update for a K-1 Mark II? I have not been able to get the firmware update to work since Precision Camera returned it after the upgrade to a Mark II. I have successfully done the firmware update in the past so I know how to do it. In fact when I sent the camera to Precision Camera it had firmware V1.43 on it and it came back with V1.02 which makes me think the Mark II has different requirements than the K-1.
Can you shed any light on this please?

YES, exactly the same issue. Fully charged battery, extracted bin file only to the root of a formatted SD card and same results. EXCEPT, my K1 is now a K1 Mark II. Just back from Precision Camera. They removed an update that I had previously loaded and it now has V1. It had V1.4 when I sent it in. I wonder if that is the issue.
