Is the Monochrome worth it?

Do you know that all these people shooting "flat and lifeless" monochromes are shooting jpegs? I've seen plenty of monochrome images that I might describe that way where I know that the person was shooting RAW.

I guess I hesitate to castigate the jpeg engine too much when I realize (a) my style is not everyone else's style -- some folks like their images darker or very contrasty generally different from my taste. Just so they meet their vision of what the image should look like, that's probably the important thing. (b) there are a number of settings that can be tweaked to get the results you want. I think Pentax has typically tried for a relatively neutral look out of the box, but with a couple of button pushes you can bump the amps to 11, if that is your desire.

Being an old-time film user of color and b&w. Color conversion whether digital or film to black and white is never as good as being black and white. Lecia and Pentax clearly show that with their monochrome cameras. I have invested in the Pentax Monochrome (my last GAS purchase) I am enjoying everything it does and does well. I will become less tethered to my film for black and white photography. It will also reduce the total cost of black and white photography as no developing and scanning costs. It will not totally replace black and white film cameras as there are specific films that I enjoy the essence they bring to the art. Is the camera worth it? An emphatic yes. Black and White has never died and is everywhere. Fashion, Art, Portrait, Landscape, etc.

Uuuh Oooh!!! :(

Oh dear - oooopsee-daisee,
I think I have already started that slippery slope having JUST THIS VERY MORNING received an HD PENTAX-DFA 1:3.5-5.6 28-105 mm ED DC WR delivered to my door by DHL, ordered 'as used', from Japan.

BUT!!! - I do have these little beauties to have fun with as I go along and will, perhaps prevent me looking for more HD DFA glass.

If such a camera existed - and I don't think it's possible because too few of the lenses designed with a ~ 45mm diameter circle (43mm of 24x36 frame + SR and other sensor moves) will work with the 55mm diagonal of the sensor in the Fuji - but if it did, I'd buy it. If I hadn't committed to FF K mount, and if I could get over my loathing of EVFs (big IFs) I'd probably be using the fuji today.

I think the best we're likely to get is a continuation of the FF K-mount. TBH my K7 and K5 were limited by me more than I was by them, and with the lenses I have now the K1 certainly is. Doesn't mean I don't check the shade of green on the Sony side of the fence of course (where I can get a modern 28-300 zoom and all the latest AF witchcraft in exchange for worse ergonomics and the cursed EVF). The range of lenses for some of the competing FF cameras is better, but for MF it's not so clever - otherwise we'd see more Sigmas and Tamrons for the big sensor fuji.

The mono seems to have been a success - I'm slightly afraid of a K1-iii Mono because I will certainly want one.

No disrespect taken. Unless I uploaded the wrong photo. The fountain was taken with a 50mm and then I cropped it down to get rid of the ugly gazebo rail in my shot.

I'll have to look at the original. Thanks for the helpful "criticism".

When you want to visit Isle aux Coudres in the county of Charlevoix, you have to embark on a 15 minute cruise across the Saint Lawrence River. I did it in very nice autumn conditions a few years back.

I keep hearing how nice catch-in-focus is, but I've never been able to get it to work - until I finally realised that you can't have AF set to back-button only (and I can't bear to have AF happen with the shutter button - I like the completely different buttons for that, then I realised customised buttons can be saved in user modes too - which is great!). Learning to hold the shutter button down is weird, but it makes flying birds much easier using CiF... Anyways, enough blabber and more photos - it's a bit noisy, but still a usable image.

One of my favourite actresses has passed away. I recall her roles in the TV series The Avengers, where she starred with Patrick MacNee and a number of film and TV roles. The last time I saw in a film was an episode of Midsomer Murders...where she must of been in her late 80's at the time. Right to the end she gave wonderful, vivid performances.

I was saddened to hear this news. Pretty much dittos on what has already been said. I don't think there was a teenage guy in the 60's who doesn't have a special place in their memory for Pussy Galore.

K1: two tricks

Trick # 1: Switching from ES to SR in Live View mode without leaving LV mode , by pressing 4 ways controller button two times.
SR and ES are mutually exclusive, so it is not possible to have SR and ES both enabled at the same time. Practically, when the light is good enough, for a static subject, you want to use ES for best sharpness. When the light isn't good enough, shutter speed getting too slow you want to enable SR to avoid the blur that occurs with ES enabled. The trouble is, enabling or disabling ES isn't directly available via smart dial, isn't available via 4 ways controller, isn't available via customizable button on the left side of the camera, isn't available in Info tile menu is LV is disabled. So, it is only possible to enable ES via Menu or Info tile only if LV is already enabled, exit LV mode and re-enter LV mode again.

But there is a direct way not planned by Pentax engineers:
- Preset camera menu to have SR enabled by default
- Preset camera menu to have ES enable by default
- Enter LV mode, ES is enabled by default (SR is automatically disabled).
- If shutter speed is too low (lower than reciprocal of FL), toggle drive mode from single shot to burst L using 4 ways controller automatically switches from ES to SR. You can now switch from ES to SR or SR to ES just by using two buttons of the 4 ways controller.

Trick # 2:
Want to do a 4 frames composite bokeh stitch ("brenizer" composite)? Notice it's not so easy to make sure each of the 4 frames overlap each frame by about 30% , especially when the camera position isn't fixed on a the tripod. When trying to frame through the OVF so that frames overlap, sometimes the overlap is 50% sometimes 10%, 50% waste a lot of frame area, 10% risk to be insufficient for good stitching of frames.

But there is a no-brainer method for effortless action:
- Turn the smart dial function button to "grid"
- Turn the smart dial wheel to enable "rule of third" (with diagonal cross) overlay in the OVF
- Frame the shot as you wish it to be
- Notice what element of the scene fall under the center of the frame, this will be the center of the stitched image result
- Now, align that element under each cross of the rule of third grid, take a shot each time
- You got 4 frames, overlapping each other by 30%. The rule of cross of the rule of third grid ensure that overlap is the same between each exposure
- Stitch the 4 frames, you get medium format result frame the way you wished it to be framed

Alternative for different frame overlap: use live view mode, select 4x4 grid, use outside grid corner crossing for framing 4 overlapping exposures.

I love my 200, it's the lightest way to get 200mm and 2.8. But it's not small, and it's still bulky. And the auto-focus is average at best.
That being said, it's probably closest to what you're looking for.

And it has resolution to spare.. this one taken with the F 1.7x AF adapter for 340mm. I often go out with it with the 1.4 TC and 1.7x, so it's not as inflexible as you might think.
