the M 42 threaded lenses were the first way Pentax connected their lenses to a slr camera body

you need an adapter to make such a lens connect to your dslr K mount camera body and still the lens will be " hampered " in its effectiveness

Pentax Mount Adapter K (M42 Screwmount to K Mount) Reviews - Pentax K-mount Teleconverters and Adapters - Pentax Lens Reviews & Lens Database

another possible danger is that the adapter could jam and render your modern camera body from being able to accept a modern bayonet lens

the adapter, as i understand it ( I have never used one ), fits into the modern bayonet mount and then you screw into that " mount " your older M 42 lens

Welcome aboard! I don't have much experience in this area, but I do know that no new microscope adapters are currently being made by Pentax. So, turning to ebay is probably a good place to start:

Asahi Pentax Microscope Adapter II - MINT (OT) | eBay

Also, a camera with live view (such as the K-30, K-50, K-5, or newer) may make your life much easier and result in sharper photos, since you'll be able to check and adjust the focus more easily.

Hi Lisa,

I am brand new to these forums myself (this is my introductory post) so welcome and I wish you and your husband good imaging.
This seems to be an amazing community from what I have sen in the last month of using the forum and you already have some good ideas and offers of help.
I'll throw in my 2 Cents too.
I do technical support for US Zeiss Microscopy and we have a guided scope-camera adaptation wizard for our own scopes and many third party cameras. Carl Zeiss Microscopy, LLC, United States > Camera Assistant
Some couplings are optically non-feasible and this can be especially true for some small field of view microscopes and large camera chips.
For SLRs (often with large chipsets) means you have to get an adapter to Magnify (spread out the light) of the image going to the Chip and you may face severe vignetting/ distortions or cropping of the field of view projecting to the camera.

The coupling of the camera to microscope is an important one and you should ideally use a photo-port (camera port built into the microscope) if you have one - otherwise the eyepiece adapters are just ok. See: See: Connecting a camera to a microscope | MicrobeHunter Microscopy Magazine

Whoever made you microscope should be able help you locate the appropriate photo adapter and there are retailers:
Microscope Port Adapters - Thorlabs and a few guys that can make custom adapters too. e.g. Richard J Kinch, PhD

Good luck

Tim

Hi, Lisa,

In the UK, check out

SRB Photographic - Camera Accessories

They do all kinds of adapters, standard and made to measure. My only connection is as a satisfied customer (adapter to enable me to use my K20d for digiscoping on my Leica scope).
