Heads up about Ford wheel nuts.

I bet whoever gets sent out bashes on a smaller socket and uses an impact driver: terrific machines and available battery-powered these days. Back in the old days the mechanics began to adopt the spider wrench – my father abominated their use, or rather over-use. Wheel nuts were generally immoveable for the driver with a flat after the low-browed made sure that wheel just wouldn't come loose any time in the next millenium.

Sigh. I hope the OP has an idea now of the possibilities open, as well as the controversies which still flare up on occasion. The important thing is to find a working method which suits you: if you find you enjoy processing your images from RAW, enjoy; if you can't be bothered with that and prefer setting the camera to get a finished JPG image straight from it then make the most of it! :D They're your photos.

And ignore any "true believer" who insists their way is the only way.

Alas, no, that’s the Ayrshire coast I was talking about. But you know the sort of weather meant! :(

Good work, Dave. Can you tell us what setting you need to turn off the Dartmoor rain? Having spent yesterday afternoon at the coast in increasingly wet weather, I could use that far above any argument about supposed lens quality. Happily, the low-grade Pentax dslr and its sub-standard glassware just kept on working and we also didn’t meet any photographers with other brands needing a whack around the gills to stop burbling about frame rates and silent eye af. The weather resistant clothing ended up very soggy, but its contents (me) stayed warm, dry and comfortable nonetheless.

What I needed was better weather, not other gear. :p

Kids grow up before you notice it! Daughter has been saving hard for her own car – although the driving test has still to be faced – and this morning we went to view one that might do her. It's old, but well maintained and it got the Mum and Dad seal of approval, so she got a look at it herself later. A mere 1 litre, 3-cylinder Toyota Aygo which runs on fumes, has low maintenance costs, but will still have to be insured for a brand new driver.:eek::eek:

Most important of all, it's a great colour! (got to get the essentials right, y'know) She's very excited...

Fixed that for you. ;)

Perhaps if Sir was less enthusiastic with the fundament rocket, Sir’s wheels would not heat to such a degree? We both know what the Dartmoor roads are like, the B3357 Ashburton to Dartsmeet and Princetown f’rinstance, playing chicken with French tour buses on the blind descents, desperately dodging tractors with hedgerow wheelspans, etc. One feels truly alive completing a journey with side panels still attached…

Raw vs jpeg

And I’ll offer another, the reason this guy uses RAW: shooting RAW enables you to maximise the image information captured in a single shot to have the best range of detail and tones available for processing to a finished image. It was the same when using film back in my day: I could shoot transparency, one shot and done, or negatives and spend (very enjoyable) time in the darkroom printing.

Both were fun. :D

Having read a fair number of biz’s remarks on the K-1, including the above, I think what he’s saying is only an idiot would have bought one, or having bought one, would keep it. Have I got that about right, biz?

Alas and oi vey, the trials of being a Pentaxian. :(

I could probably get away with just three lenses: 11-18, 16-50 and 55-300 PLMs. However there are none of them in my bag and much moolah would be necessary to acquire them, so what is actually in the bag is in the bag. I think I’d have more fun buying a printer and making A3 prints instead of having others print them for me.

Funny, that; also not on the poll options.

Aperture diffraction question

From the article Peter linked above:

I think that’s clear enough? Whether I’m using a 10mm or a 300mm, I want to avoid f/22 on my tiny APS-C-sensor camera. On the other hand, f/64 won’t affect Ben Horne shooting rock textures from Zion on his 8”x10” large format film camera because the film is so huge, but if he were to crop out an APS-C sized piece of film and enlarge that to say, A3, the diffraction would be obvious and ugly.

Wycliffe’s body was dug up and burned for the heinous crime of translating the Bible from Latin into English and for recommending his fellow priests practice what they preached. Not quite the same as “forgetting” to do your job properly, is it?

That’s perhaps from the manual for the software supplied with the camera? Many of us use other software like Photoshop, Darktable, Lightroom etc for post-processing photos and can choose whichever image format suits our purpose. Welcome to the dark side…

JPEG images are compressed and don’t give the full detail and full range of tones available in a RAW image. If you’re only looking at your photos on a screen, tablet or phone that doesn’t matter. If you’re making decent-sized prints it can matter a lot. Also if you’re editing your photos to any extent other than cropping you’ll get better results working with RAW files.

The downside is almost all RAW files need editing to give good results, but what you lose in time you gain in quality. Many people find that they aren’t willing to spend that time and that’s fine, they’re their photos. I enjoy seeing a RAW file become something special with just a few well-targeted adjustments. It doesn’t end up as a JPG though, but a TIFF.

I particularly enjoyed one eyewitness report of that:

QuoteQuote:

Amateur aviation photographer Clinton Down was photographing planes landing at the runway when he saw the crash unfold.
"Halfway up the runway [the plane] flipped forwards," Mr Down said.
"I saw the tail go right up and over which was a big shock.
"I knew what happened right away and thought that is not supposed to happen, so I jumped in the car and called triple-0."

No kidding, Mr Down.

Cheque banking by photo? Good to hear your lot are catching up, we’ve been doing that since before Covid, although cheques are few and far between - all contributions gratefully received, of course.

My daughter joined the Dark Side now she’s earning but like you bought used: a snappy iPhone 12 for a fraction of the price new. Chip off the old block!

Workplace culture, that about sums it up. We had a works vehicle with a concerning vibration from the wheels at open road speeds and sent it into the workshop for investigation, twice, last week. Nothing wrong with it, they said. I took one of their people for a short drive along the open road, got the predictable dundundundun above 40mph and said to him got it now? He mumbled something and we left the vehicle with them again. It came back with a new tyre and without the vibrations.

Didn’t want a blowout driving to Furryboots City later this month!
