Hello All -
Thank you for your responses.
I believe I understand depth of field. The lens was open wide ( 1.8-4.0) because photos were taken inside, some at night. I believe images which were out of focus were quite close to the subject. We were celebrating a 1-year old's birthday. For example - the face would be in focus, but the cake/meatball was blurry and out of focus (12-18 inches away from the face). OR the face would be in focus, but the fingers were not (speed was adequate). Or I was taking a group shot, adults on 1 side were in focus but the adult on the other side of the table was out of focus.
I believed that once I purchased a more sophisticated camera, the pictures would be sharp through the visualized image [ or at least the bracket areas]. I do rely on feedback from the camera that the area is in focus. Experience with this camera has been a bit disappointing. Any additional thoughts are welcomed but I will certainly keep in mind what everyone has said.

Good Day Everyone,
I have a Pentax K-3. My lenses include the 14mm, 50mm (DA), and 18-135. In many settings, portraits especially, the area of focus seems to be very small. The remainder of the photo is out of focus.
Pictures are typically taken in a manual mode. AF mode set to AF.S. AF Active Area and Select Area set to Select. All Lens Correction features are 'on'. AA Filter Stimulator and Shake Reduction is off.
Thoughts?
Thanks,
AFJT
