Antone here done it? I would like to make something like the old school grip. No need for a hot shoe. Anyone know what type of mount is on the side of the camera that the stock grip is? I am thinking some aluminum bar stock and wooden dowel would work.

Thanks folks. I did some light disassembly and cleaning today. I think it will work. It is the C33 not 330 btw.

Any good places I could send it in for service? I found a local thrift store that has a bunch of old camera gear from an estate sale. I picked this out and there is more. I will be going back.

not specifically Pentax but.........................

I got an old Mamiya C33 today for $20. It needs cleaning and the light seals replaced. Not 100% sure it works. What do people use to make light seals? I figure a hardware store trip and will cut my own. Just not sure what to get.

Actually those are some cool shots. Might not be what you wanted but they are cool.

So in this situation spot meter off a tree trunk or off the side of the little shed or off the side of the bridge. try that exposure with that reading or

Take another spot meter on the snow and calculte what 1 AND 2 f stop adjustment would be and compare it to your spot metering on the tree/shed/bridge. If they are close go with one, or split the difference.

Lets say the bridge. You are shooting at f8 and it says use 1/30 but the snow reading says use 1/500. so 1/500-2f stops is 1/125th. You could go with 1/60th and split the differance or bracket and shoot 1/125, 1/60 and 1/30. That gets expensive however.

When you shoot track what your settings ere for each shot then see how they turn out. If you see a trend ie everything under exposed then look at your light meter.

Actual shutter speeds versus "standard" values

Here is an article on the subject

Shutter-Speed-Tester for your iPhone! · Lomography

As we are all analog photographers, we have one thing in common: We all work mostly with old, second-hand cameras. But did you ever ask yourself, whether those cameras still expose your film right, or not ?
The most critical component in every camera is the shutter, because the shutter-speed determines how much light the film gets. Most cameras provide multiple shutter-speeds like 1/30s, 1/60s, 1/125s, 1/250s etc. On most older cameras, those shutter speeds are created and regulated with complicated spring mechanisms. This can be a problem, because after several years, the springs inside the camera can lose their tension, which results in wrong shutter speeds: The camera exposes too long, and your film gets overexposed.
But how can you know if your camera is exposing correctly ? How can you know whether your 1/125 is still a 1/125 and not more likely a 1/80 ?
With this app, you will know. It allows you to measure the actual shutter-speed of your camera and gives you the deviation from the target value.
How does this work ?
The App uses an acoustic measuring method. When you release the shutter of your camera, the shutter generates the well-known shutter-release-sound. But this sound is not just a sound, it contains a lot of information about the shutter ! With the App, you can record this sound. Then, the waveform of the sound is displayed on your iPhone. In this waveform, you will recognize two Peaks:.......................cont

As said before it was one of a couple things or a combination of:
1. Bad light meter
2. Fading light
3. Did not use meter correctly.

When metering remember the meter reads an 18% gray that is medium gray. If you are metering white or black you need to compensate 1 or 2 stops since the meter wants to expose that and make it gray. Overexpose white 1-2 stops and under expose black 1-2 stops. I am guessing you did not compensate for the snow. You should have adjusted and exposed 2 more stops stops if things are that far off.

When metering, meter the shadows if in doubt and see how that works. In very high contrast you may have to expose in the middle some place and depending on what you are trying to do. Set the exposure closer to the shadow detail than highlights. Keep at it you will learn. We all have been and are still there. There is always something new to learn.

Thanks for the feedback. In the film days I usually bought inexpensive body and spent my money on the lens. There days the body and software are a bigger factor than they used to be. I feel like a dinosaur sometimes.

67 vs 645 digital

Thinks for the info. I have had my 67 in storage for years now shooting digital but decided to duast it off lately. . The T3i is an 18 mp consumer grade DSLR. I used to shoot a lot of E-6 back when there were lots of local places to take it to along with print film depending on what I anted to do. I even used to have my own dark room. I will hold off with the 647 for now.

I have been very impressed with the 67 system since buying mine in 1998 or so. I really like the look of a good film shot but the cost. I put a couple of of my old photos I shot with my 35mm in the 90's below. Its not the best copies so a lot of detail was lost. The beach scene print came out black and gold when it was originally printed. I have never been able to get a print like that from the digital scan. Hopefully I can some day just need to dig out the negative. Thanks for the feedback.

The problem with google is well I don't trust everything you read on the internet. I understand the photography process and printing and have been doing photography since the mid 1980's.

The thing is when digital first came out it did not compare in quality do a good high quality film. Is that still the case. What I like about the 645 system is you can get adapters so I can use my 67 lenses on them. In fact I use my 67 lenses on my T3i.

My question is has digital surpassed medium format 67 in quality? The problem with many film photos is people use a flat bed scanner and it is compressed into jpg Also may photo labs do not get as high a res scan as they could. Now this is fine for the internet and even large prints many times but very few do a drum scan to get the entire quality from a 6x7 negative.

Here is an example. Many years ago I took a photo of the redwoods shooting down a river. In the photo there was a fishermen on a point. When I enlarged the photo to 11x14 the fisherman was about 1/4 in high max, possibly smaller.. Now that is not the amazing thing, not you could see the sun reflecting off the fishing line going into the water, very fine detail. That was taken with a 165 ls lens. Now is digital capable of getting that kind of detail? I know even with 32 bit color it will not capture the subtle colors of film. How about detail? I know you can shoot three exposures of digital and merge them ie -2 stops correct and +2 and you will get better shadow and highlight detail. Does the medium format capture that detail without having to merge three exposures?

Beautiful shots. I really like the detail in the water.

I know this is ever changing with technology and it is apples and oranges but, has anyone done a quality comparison with the new 645 digital vs 67 film with a drum scan? I know they are different looks. I have been shooting a digital SLR for years now but wondering a couple things between the two formats. If possible the 67 vs 645 D vs 645 Z

File size comparison Drum scan vs 645 D vs 645 Z

Dynamic range digital vs slide vs print film and 645 d vs Z

Color representation. I know used to be analog could capture more colors than digital and is probably so. The thing is most photos are put on the web so it would be a print comparison. Also what is the difference of the 645 d vs Z ?

Last but not least is the 645 Z worth the extra cash over the D? I am not a professional so it would have to be a significant difference. For reference my current digital camera is a Canon T3i. I am sure both would be a big step up in quality not to mention price.

Two Big Brutes Fighting Over 6x7 Camera

Hopefully I can be of some help.

Film-That depends on many factors including subject your likes what you are trying to do etc. Not sure if you are new to film or not but each film has its own looks. Here are some I have used in my 67 they still make. (I think)

Fuji Velvia 50 and 100- Slow speed film. Lots of contrast and very vibrant colors. Good for landscapes. Skin tones can look a little off if I remember. This is an E-6 slide film I prefer the 50 over the 100 for landscapes but that is just me. I use both.

Kodak Portra 160 and 400- Great for taking pictures of people. Very wide dynamic range and even tones. If you really need to flatten out and get details in shadows in a high contrast scene this may be a good choice. The colors do not have a lot of saturation but look more realistic. This is a c-41 ie print film

Kodak Tmax black and white- Traditional Black and white film with finer grain than the Tri-x. I prefer the look of this over the C-41 processed black and white film.

Illford- Delta 100 and 400. Another good choice for black and white film. It is traditional processing and has a diffrent look than Kodak. It is up to you what one you like best.

Illford HP-4 and HP-5 a finer grain Black and White film.

There really is no one best film but each has its own personality, strengths and weakness. Portra 400 may be better for one subject and Velvia 50 better for a different subject. Add that each person has their own style etc and you realize it is a never ending learning experience.

Try this. Find a subject you want to shoot. Try two different films and take the same photo with the same camera lens etc and that will teach you a lot about the differences in film. You tube videos don't do it justice. Pick one or two photos that is the same for comparison and have a large print with high res scans done. You may like the look of the c-41 process black and white or even using portra 400 then converting to black and white prints.

Lenses- Another subjective point that depends if your type of shooting and what you like.
Since you already have one lens one thing to look at is seeing what size the filter it takes. For instance my first lens was a 165 leaf shutter with a 77 mm objective. When I wanted to get a wider angle lens I got one with a 77mm so I could save on money because my filters fit both.

Congratulations on the new camera go out and enjoy.

I looked at the manual and could not find the answer.

On a 67II can I swap out the prisim with film in the camera or do I have to do it when the camera is unloaded to keep from ruining the film? I just brought the old war horse out of retirement and there is a lot I forgot. I have the standard metering as well as a folding lend hood for it. I am kicking the idea around of trying the old folding hood for fun.

Ran across the forum and thought I would join in. I have a Pentax 67II system I bought new years ago. It has been laying around and I decided I will bring it back out for some fun. I guess film is making a comeback and that is good news to me.
