It's happened with every SDM lens that I've owned.....But I still LOVE THE LENSES!!! Mine have started by squeaking. The last culprit, was the DA*60-250- I noticed that it was squeaking more than usual at the last soccer match I was at. I just talked to Pentax Canada, and they suggested I send the lens in sooner than later. So, once again, my lens is adrift in repair land. On my 16-50, it started with occasional squeaks, then intermittently focusing, then not focusing. Ditto for the 50-135. Something makes me think that the ultra dry Okanagan weather effects these lenses. But you know what? I tried other lenses, and I go right back to the Pentax. In my opinion, nothing compares. :)

I ended up getting the Pentax 60-250. I LOVE it! Tried the sigma, and it just wasn't Pentax....

Hi Les- Fellow western Canadian here. FYI I've had the K5 from the beginning, have had issues, but still love it. It's had the sensor replaced, and more recently, the main circuit board. BUT, Don's Photo from Winnipeg (I bought online) has a phenomenal extended warranty that for an extra 25/35$, you get a loaner camera. So I have a 3 year warranty with a loaner for if the camera has to get sent in. The whole 2 year extended with loaner was $238. They have been more than helpful. Just something to keep in mind.
Enjoy the K5. It is an amazing camera! :)

I've had SDM issues with some of my lenses, but you know, I love those darn DA* lenses. I've tried out the Sigma's and I keep going back to the DA*'s. To me, the IQ of those lenses outweigh the occasional repair job that may be necessary.

So...after Don's Photo going to bat for me....Pentax Canada will now replace the main circuit board of my original camera, which I can only assume, will fix the issues that it had. I really don't know why they didn't do this in the first place. If they could replace the demo units circuit board, why didn't they do mine? Oh well, at least I'll get my camera back. I know how it's been treated, as opposed to the other one. Thanks everyone for your input. And please, lets all be nice to each other! :)

Thanks everyone for your input....I wanted to make sure I wasn't over reacting to what I thought was not a fair deal. At this point I will wait to see how Pentax Canada responds. Don's Photo is being extremely helpful, so as long as I have a working camera at this point in time, I'm happy. BTW, it seems that the replacement camera has had the main circuit board replaced (it's on the invoice) so I would assume that the shutter mechanism has not been replaced. Therefore, this "replacement" was probably not without it's own problems....At this point, I think a factory refurb FROM JAPAN would be the way to go. Or just send my original camera to Japan. At least they know what they are doing.

I have sent an email via Don's Photo (bless you guys) to Pentax Canada. I will await a response from them, to see how they deal with it. After that, I will definitely look into the Investor Relations thing.
Honestly, I just wish they would have sent my camera to Japan. At least they would know how to fix it!

FYI, I (the OP) used 2 different programs to check the shutter actuations on what is now all 3 of the camera's (the one sent in, the loaner, and the "replacement") I used myshuttercount.com, and exif tool, and they both came up with the same counts (sent one 3082, replacement 136650 BTW the loaner has only 2000 actuations, but has an issue with it's rear e-dial.

Ok! First of all, I'm a she... :) The problem with the freezing etc.. was happening more and more often. I didn't bother with sending it in when it happened once in awhile. I could easily deal with that. Easy enough to pop out the battery, and pop it back in. I sent it in when the camera did it about 5 times in an hour period, during a hockey game that I was covering. It didn't record any of the photo's-made a nasty noise and froze. At that point, it was no longer acceptable. I had phoned Pentax, and they originally tried to say it was my lenses and SD card. So how come it has not happened once since I've been using a loaner camera (with same lenses and same SD card) This proves to me that it was not just a "random" thing. Just to note, that my first K5 had stains, and was replaced with another K5 (the one that I sent in) that developed stains also. They replaced the sensor a few months back. So all in all, I haven't even had my own K5 for a good part of the time. My concern with the number of actuations, is that if I decided to sell it a year or so from now (to upgrade to a hopefully even better camera) that the shutter issue would affect the sale. The most questions received when I was selling my K20d were regarding how many shutter actuations were on the camera.
I don't want a brand new camera- (well I would, but I don't expect it) I would think that getting a comparable camera to what I had would be in order. I have had nothing but problems with my K5 purchase since I bought the thing (for $1600 I might add). I still love the camera, despite all the issues. When it works, it's great. Thankfully, Don's Photo has been nothing but helpful.
