Well, the lens will still cost the same in 5 years. You may be able to pick up a K3iii cheaply in the future.

The “usual confirmation” is not the beep and red focus point flashing red, but the green hexagon in the bottom of the viewfinder.

It's not.

But it does, can, or should maybe, put the user in a different frame of mind when using.

Tamron and Pentax 24-70 lens hood compatibility

Ordered a third party lens hood for the Tamron (JJC branded) and it indeed fits like a charm. Even the markings line up.

Probably a little more flimsy than the original offerings but it does the job and it didn't cost over 10% what i paid for the lens. :)

Some weird light leaks - Pentax Z-20 & Kodak Gold 200

Agreed. Also the film is upside down when in the camera. So the leak is on the right of the camera when viewed from behind. The fact that it goes over the frame edges suggests a camera light leak to me.

I would advise you to buy the KF. I own a KP and while it’s wonderful - recently Precision Cameras posted that several cameras cannot be repaired any longer and the KP was listed. I love my KP - and I would have advised it as the choice to make prior to the announcement by precision. I still think it’s a better camera than the KF - but I would be remiss if I didn’t warn you of the situation.

Moskva 5 and weird issue

Fix has been confirmed on both cameras. Both me and my friend have removed this little protruding bit from our Moskva 5:

I have a hard time understanding why was it necessary in the first place...

After this fix, we both shot another roll of film and in both cases the stripes are gone! Backing paper looks nice and free from scratches, negatives look nice also. And so does final image, no weird striping any more!

And with that, the camera is finally usable!

Here are two recent shots, one with the K-3Mono with an orange filter, and another with an IR full spectrum conversion with a 780nm filter, converted to BW. Darker sky, and the grasses in the valley show up lighter. Carrizo Plain, btw.

Raw vs jpeg

I'll offer a slightly different perspective.

The main purpose of post-processing the RAW files seems to be error-correction or image enhancement. Neither is required if you nailed your shot -- composition, exposure, timing -- when you pulled the trigger.

Sometimes it's good to live with your failures and even small misses. If you can see them, you can take steps to avoid them the next time.

For that reason I have my digital camera set to JPEG on principle.

Raw vs jpeg

Many times, especially in finer restaurants the chef determines how your food is cooked, and seasoned, and is insulted if you “suggest” or request it be done differently, and you know what, usually they are right.

So if we stop talking about cameras and lenses it will curb your CBA and LBA also:hmm:

---------- Post added 03-11-24 at 08:49 AM ----------

The whole discussion of RAW vs JPEG is something that has been going on since the onset of digital photography. And there are many myths and errors that have propagated along the way.

The biggest myth is that JPEG can’t be post processed, it can, but with limitations. It can be sharpened, lightened, darkened, colour adjusted, corrected for lens aberrations and distortions, but you need to remember that you are dealing first and foremost with 8bit vs 16 bit colour depth, so large adjustments can lead to colour banding.

The next biggest myth is that it is compressed, and I will separate that out from the question of colour depth. There are two types of compression in jpeg images, one you can control, the other you can’t. Within the JPEG file format, there is Mathematical compression where pixels are grouped in sets of similar parameters, and given a value, which allows for file compression, depending on the amount of compression used, this can leave artifacts in the image. If you select the highest quality JPEG in the camera, it does not do this, but the result is a bigger image file but you get no artifacts at the other end. The other compression is of the exposure scale. JPEG images have an exposure latitude of about 11 stops. And you can in fact measure this with your camera and a simple test. Starting at complete black at greyscale value of 0 and complete white at a grey scale of 255, the first stop above or below these limits is 3 or 252 greyscale respectively. The next stop is about another 7-10 greyscale or 10-13 at the low end and 242-239 at the high end, the next stop is about another 20-25 greyscale or 33-38 at the low end and 222-217 at the high end. The middle 5 1/2 stops are spread almost uniformly across the middle range in steps of about 40 greyscale per f stop. This means that the real detail is stored in about 5 1/2 stops across the middle of the exposure.

What the raw image gives largely is more detail in the limits of exposure, so if you for example really miss the exposure by 3-4 stops, you can somewhat recover the image. It also, due to the increased colour depth, gives a little finer definition of the individual stops so that large adjustments don’t result in as much banding as with 8 bit.

This is really the difference between the two.

As an aside, the is another benefit to at least working your jpeg settings, as they generate the image thumbnail for your raw image, and in many photo editors, act as the starting point for adjustments made to the raw file.

My congratulations too, to Yaki!

No worries, I really didn't expect to win anything with pretty much my first go at the approach! Handheld, I was never going to maintain the centre satisfactorily. Since then I've thought-out some methods for fixing one element of the subject relative to the camera while moving them both around.

M42 to k mount adapter troubleshooting

I would use a "flanged" adapter to connect my M42 bellows to K-mount body as the genuine Pentax adapter has some rotational movement no matter how tightly I screw in the bellow adapter. Since the flanged adapters use the standard K-mount body locking pin I'm guess most of the rotation can be eliminated. The extra few millimeters aren't going to make much of a difference with bellows.

The Chinese adapters are ok if you remove the screw and clip and screw them onto the lens semi-permanently using threadlock.
